Abbey Road is the Beatles’ 9th Symphony. A final masterpiece achieved in difficult circumstances by the greatest composers of their time. Both the 9th Symphony and Abbey Road have amazing and joyful finales that put a giant exclamation point on the artists’ magnificent career. Despite the struggles, Beethoven and the Beatles finish with a triumphant masterpiece. Excellent video - as always.

Thx, Abigail. What I enjoy the most is that youth, like you, is still discovering/enjoying the Beatles still at present. Sorry to my lovely daughters who were unknowingly indoctrinated from berth, but is was for their best.
Yowza, with that replica blue dress! The Beatles are my favorite group. This is one of the albums of my lifetime. Thanks for making a video celebrating it!
John Lennon (yawns) : "What are we going to do about the cover, lads?" Ringo Starr : "Well, why don't we go outside and walk backwards and forwards over the zebra crossing and take a few snaps?" Paul McCartney : "Okay. And I'll take my shoes and socks off to make it look a bit more interesting!" George Harrison : "I don't want to go outside 😞"
Paul said the reason he took his shoes off and walked barefoot was because it was too hot. How many of you thinks that black asphalt and white paint would be cooler barefoot? Does that even make sense to you?
Abbey Road is tied with All Things Must Pass as my if-necessary one-and-only "desert island recording". I've saved it to play it through my great ear buds with an MP3 player at the end of several trips on the way home, either on the airplane or in the shuttle/Uber/Lyft. It just transports me to a wonderful different place and time and eliminates any negativity from the rigors of travel. Several times, the album has still been playing when it's time to land or arrive at my house, and I want the journey to last a little longer, even if its hot or bumpy or uncomfortable, in order to let the album finish - that's how powerful and enjoyable it is. Thanks Abby for your perspective on it!
My daughter just gifted me a copy of the remastered vinyl version of Abby Road for Christmas. It sounds better than ever and is in my top 3 favorite Beatles albums.
New to the channel. I've had an opportunity to go back and watch a number of these Vinyl Monday episodes. Your research is outstanding, and your writing is excellent. I can't imagine how much time you invest putting each of these episodes together. Just know it's appreciated. I watch primarily for the in-depth analysis and interesting factoids, but your reviews are really the gravy on the mashed potatoes. Keep up the great work! Subscribed.
I've always preferred late era Beatles. The White Album was probably the first that I bought for myself and I definitely got a lot of mileage out of it, but Abbey Road is a masterpiece. There are numerous points in it that reduce me to tears and I make a point to give it a proper uninterrupted listen once a year.
Abi you are a wordsmith! You nailed it on “Here comes the sun” - “So much of the Beatles most iconic moments were rooted in joy. This is the most joyful of all.”
Hello Abigail. I love your videos. I just want to say that Nikki Hopkins played with both the Rolling Stones and the Beatles as well. Nikki plays keyboard on Revolution.
george is undeniably magnificent and is strutting his stuff on this record but lennon and mccartney performing songs they wrote from 63 to rubber soul especially are what set the stage for george to shine as bright as he did later. i think you're an old soul, a wordsmith, a gorgeous replica of women george had at his disposal constantly, a woman who hopefully takes care of herself when relating to the tragic figures of rock but lennon and mccartney writing and singing those songs is the heart of the beatles. long live the fab 4 and soon may people start shipping you the records you're missing from your collection....pamela des barres' copies of stones records, etc..
For me this album is a summary statement of everything The Beatles ever did and every idea they had. They didn't even need to record full songs to prove it. Genius
Your vids keep getting better - and they started out excellent. Must salute the Queen of Lovely Rita Fans on a (I insist!) near perfect "I Want You" scream and completely perfect end-of-episode. Glad I stuck around 😅
I just want to get this quick thought in about Abbey Road. Abbey Road is a much better album for The Beatle to go out on than Let It Be. Abbey Road is the nice beautiful bow that is wrapped around a box of amazing body of work. It is the finally of a firework display. You can say they went out on a blaze of glory and a wonderful way to end the most remarkable work of artistical music expression in modern popular music. Now each every member of the band can go on to their solo work after having climb the Mt. Everest of what an artist can reach. The Beatles showed that not only the heights of Mt. Everest but the sky was the limits in music creativity.

I've always been under the impression that each verse of COME TOGETHER was about one of the Beatles . . . obviously, the verse with "Ono sideboard" and "bag production" and "walrus gumboot" is the verse John wrote about himself.
The End..."I love how you can tell who played what"...well congratulations, sport! Because after decades of listening I've never really figured it out. If I'm wrong, somebody that KNOWS for sure come in and set me straight. Perhaps you, Abigail?
First, I'd like to tell you that I just discovered your channel and I love it. Now my comment has to do with what you said about George writing the hits. I think it has to do with the fact that most of his compositions were rejected by Lennon-McCartney. He was allowed a couple of songs per album at most so whatever got through had to be excellent. This is also why, after the breakup, he was the most productive former Beatle. No wonder he needed a triple album for All things must pass.
I would have really loved it if you could have lust mentioned the other two albums of the “trio” from 1969 that had so much influence. I’m assuming it was Zeppelin II, which came out in the fall of 1969…….and I guess, from the “hint” at the end, King Crimson? 🧐
My introduction to your channel and I'm SO all about it. You are doing something unique in the UA-cam music nerd genre and thanks for that! Yea....... sometimes I toy with referencing this album without Maxwell and adding Don't let me down where you did and moving Money is a great solution that I hadn't thought of well done! That said I relistened recently and had a "oh I guess I like Maxwell afterall" moment so maybe it should stay as is. Lock it in boys!
'69 was, indeed a great year for music, and the Fall of '69 gave us Abbey Road and In the Court of the Crimson King. Your 3rd album? Several great records from which to choose: The Band's Brown Album Zappa's Hot Rats Led Zeppelin II Ummagumma (which you keep bringing up . . . . !) Self-titled albums from both Free and David Bowie Monster from Steppenwolf , and Let It Bleed from that garage band. I dunno, I just think that 1965-1976 was such a sweet twelve years.
Abby Road is the Beatles' slickest production record and probably the most pop, not that mindblowing. Meet the Beatles is their most mind-blowing record, the start of Beatlemania. The bootlegs, reissue and reissues, extras, remixes, scrambles, new songs by "The Beatles" a plethora of solo releases only dilute the legacy. The deconstructed versions of their songs are a revelation. This record is the Beatles on autopilot.
Definitely my favourite & most played Beatles album. Such a great insight, thank you. 1969 was a Great year for music. The amount of great album tunes & vinyl 45's I have from that year is over 50
I'm about to start your video. I'm little afraid, because for me this is like your "Layla", it's been my favorite album of all since I first heard it in 1975 at age 12. Ok, Abbey, ooh I mean Abigail. You nailed it. Abbey Road is an experiential album. Long after we all agreed we loved it, we started to examine why we loved it. Maybe examined it too much. Just let it be. Hey...
Hands up those who stayed in class until the very end (not The End) of the episode and heard the smart/nice surprise Abby gave us. If ever you wanted to hear her sing...
"She's So Heavy" for me is the greatest moment of the album. The two versions of "I want you..." make a very pleasent contrast, and the noisy-long end is simply marvelous (yes, I'm a huge fan of Sonic Youth!). A solo, Harrison's or Hendrix's, would have lost its magic feeling.
when I was 14 this album came out and I wrote a 24 page epic poem listening for 5 days to only the melody on side 2. I just got a copy of it last year. To the lads...!
Great analysis of probably my number one Beatles album though both Revolver & the White Album run it close. Your knowledge of the band is very impressive and I have to say this is probably the best analysis of a Beatles album I've seen on UA-cam. I was born in 1969 and would love to go back there just for a few days.
Enjoyable as usual. A few thoughts. DON’T LET ME DOWN was never going to be considered for this because it was from different sessions at the beginning of 1969…too different in sound etc… as far as the often maligned MAXWELL…. I maintain that if that song was written and done by say RANDY NEWMAN or WARREN ZEVON it would have been praised by critics to the heavens! They both wrote songs with similar dark comedy themes, check out Excitable Boy by ZEVON. Anyway I think this is one of the best albums ever made , a high point of the RnR era..and it’s not even my favorite Beatle album! They went out on top. Some nit picks….another keyboard player besides Billy Preston recorded with both the Beatles and Stones…NICKY HOPKINS…Hopkins is on Revolution . Ok thanks great job!
Abby, third and final comment about what else the Beatles were doing in 1969... John was banned from the USA at the time, because of a drugs charge. Instead, he and the wife went to Toronto, where he recorded Give Peace A Chance in the hotel room and also organised a concert for peace (documented by DA Pennebaker). The Beatles put out another great single, The Ballad of John and Yoko b/w Old Brown Shoe. The Ballad of John and Yoko is a John masterpiece of sorts, all about the recent adventures, with some really choice lyrics. John was keen to put it out as an "instant single", so he and Paul got together and did all the parts, including Paul on drums. Old Brown Shoe on the flip side is just as good (George, sounding great). The two tracks may be found on Past Masters Vol.2. The end. From me to you, peace and love.
Correction. Get it right, mate. Montreal in Canada is where Give Peace A Chance was recorded. Apparently the locals are very proud of that. But the peace concert was in Toronto. Clapton was in it, and it was filmed by DA Pennebaker.
I've always thought the riffs of "I Want You" and "Because" are similar, even though the songs are very different. For me, they're the two best tracks of the album.
Agreed about the back cover shot Abby----really helps give the album a summery feel and the person photographed had good taste. A moment in time well captured. I'm glad to to see you giving it props.
She's So Heavy made this album; grunge before grunge. It's why Paul fronting a new Nirvana song felt so right. The rest of the album is a drunk man tugging on beards at a bar singing Octopus Garden directly into your ear. You're enjoying everything about the experience except that there's a drunk man tugging on your beard while singing in your ear.
I've only recently heard Pauls bass lines isolated on "Something". He's doing some very inspired playing indeed. I had the opportunity to meet Robert Moog in the Ninties. He lived in Black Mountain NC just outside of Ashville. He was more an engineer than a musician, but he was a very nice and considerate man.
Beautifully played but a bit busy for a song like "Something". George Harrison once commented that it was a bit much for the song's sentiment. A bit of a showoff on McCartney's part.
Of course, you notice the subtle joke on the cover, the presence of a 5th Beatle, the Volkswagen Beetle, which is made in Germany, where the Beatles got their chops playing double sets in the clubs every day and night....
First time watching your channel, and this video has hooked me. And now I'm obsessed with the idea of moving "...Money" to side one and having "Don't Let Me Down" replace it in The Long One. Brilliant idea. Looking forward to delving into your past Vinyl Monday videos, keep up the great work.
But would you leave John's "Kill!" intact after the 9th repetition of one two three four five six seven, all good children go to heaven, or would you delete it to save all the Manson gossip?
Another fan of Maxwell's here. It's at least a complete song...unlike the medley of 'unfinished ideas glued together' that is the bulk of side 2. The 'long one' reveals that L&M weren't helping each other finish songs as much anymore. 😞 If MSH was not on the album it would have been on another hit single. MSH reminds me of Harry Nilsson. Sweet, often corny music with dark lyrics. He's considered a genius by some. btw...I love side 2
@Abigail - now you've done the GTOs, can you have a look at Fanny sometime? (Perhaps I should rephrase that remark...) The GTO's may be Zappa-weird! but Fanny were the first all-girl serious rock band.
It may well be, as you say that the woman on back cover of Abbey Road may never be known, but the man standing on the right is a guy named Paul Cole, who happened to be on his honeymoon and waiting outside for his wife who, I think, was in a museum. There are interviews with him around.
Yep, glad you mentioned that. And he said he wasn't even a Beatles Fan, nor much of a fan of pop music in general. But there he is anyway. Just shows how spontaneous this photo shoot really was. They did ask the police to hold up traffic for 10 minutes, but that's all they could get. It's an extremely busy city street.

Ok, Abbey, ooh I mean Abigail. You nailed it. Abbey Road is an experiential album. Long after we all agreed we loved it, we started to examine why we loved it. Maybe examined it too much. Just let it be. Hey...
Thank you for posting this on my birthday. I knew you still loved me. ❤ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜
happy birthday!!
From and earlier song: "We take a walk. The sun is shining down. Burns my feet as they touch the ground."
Great analysis of probably my number one Beatles album though both Revolver & the White Album run it close. Your knowledge of the band is very impressive and I have to say this is probably the best analysis of a Beatles album I've seen on UA-cam. I was born in 1969 and would love to go back there just for a few days.
Abby you have a great voice
Good points made,
And Eric Clapton recorded with both too.
Pop quiz: how many murders did the song Maxwell's Silver Hammer inspire?
My favorite was bathroom window as well. I also like Joe Cocker version of it.
Abby crossing Abbey Road, it's about time!!
I’d argue that Oh! Darling is the best vocal Paul ever laid down on tape.
my second favourite album of all time
It's right up there with my favourite albums.
23:10 NAILED that "yeah!"
Hi Abby to me this record is a masterpiece every song is beautiful
I'm jealous of your great record collection!!
I've always thought the riffs of "I Want You" and "Because" are similar, even though the songs are very different. For me, they're the two best tracks of the album.
Fall 1968: "Astral Weeks," Van Morrison, "Traffic" (their 2nd), "Electric Ladyland," Jimi Hendrix Experience, "The Beatles" (aka "White" album), The Beatles.
I love this album. It's my all-time favorite, but now you got me thinking about Don't Let Me Down. Damn!
"Don't Let Me Down" should have been included on Let It Be - fits much better there.
Informative and entertaining.
Also her record room just crawled in from 1967 lol
But would you leave John's "Kill!" intact after the 9th repetition of one two three four five six seven, all good children go to heaven, or would you delete it to save all the Manson gossip?
Another fan of Maxwell's here. It's at least a complete song...unlike the medley of 'unfinished ideas glued together' that is the bulk of side 2. The 'long one' reveals that L&M weren't helping each other finish songs as much anymore. 😞
If MSH was not on the album it would have been on another hit single.
MSH reminds me of Harry Nilsson. Sweet, often corny music with dark lyrics. He's considered a genius by some.
btw...I love side 2
10:20 as a fun fact, while Paul does harmony vocals on the second half of the song, the only word he refrains from singing is "Christ!"
Watching Vinyl Monday is the only thing I like about Mondays. Great video. I really enjoyed this.
@Abigail - now you've done the GTOs, can you have a look at Fanny sometime? (Perhaps I should rephrase that remark...) The GTO's may be Zappa-weird! but Fanny were the first all-girl serious rock band.
Ok, your majesty! :) Maxwell, I agree, shouldn't have made the record.... but I don't skip it.
Nice touch with "Her Majesty" at the end.
Brilliant ending 😊
@@jessescruggs1726Certainly is, although that's partly because so many people seem to want to get their photo taken there... ;-)
I had to pause at 3:56 for a while. You win!
this girl is too adorable for words and stuff
