Using a real mental condition that affects real people as an excuse... Even more disgusting than the original lies.

It seems like he's a compulsive liar. Compulsive liars almost always get caught lying. I don't know if it's such low self worth they have to sensationalize their lives or a personality disorder or what. I do think people can get in the habit of lying and not know how to break the cycle. I am not saying I am excusing his behavior just trying to understand it. Def mad that his publisher's downplay his chronic deceiving nature...probably because he has made them a lot of money.

Love or loathe, I doubt all the flaming reactions around him would still be as fiery if he weren’t so obviously good looking, just a thought.

Please, this calls for compassion and restraint. It is irresponsible and uninformed of media voices to condemn this man without trying to understand his mental illness. It seems unlikely that his actions are the result of bi-polar syndrome, given that experts and advocates for that condition have cogently criticized Mr Mallory for having apparently blamed that condition as the cause of his bizarre deceptions. However, he clearly is suffering from some serious mental illness, and the explanation may in fact lie in the realm of dissociative identity disorder rather than, as some are saying, cookie-cutter psychopathology (anti-social personality disorder). Mr Mallory is surely not "just" a con man. He is, actually, ill. Please, people, get informed about dissociative identity disorder. It has a truly heartbreaking etiology, and devastatingly impacts sufferers and those who are close to them. It is rarely diagnosed, yet it affects a large number of people. For example, nearly 6,000 people are members of this facebook support group for sufferers and loved ones facebook.com/groups/LivingWithDID.
The psychiatric community needs to significantly increase its efforts to understand and educate practitioners on how to look for, rule out, or recognize, the symptoms of this illness in clinical settings. This is a cry to use Mr. Mallory's case for good, to raise greater awareness. All the best to him, and to all who suffer from misunderstood mental health conditions.

Thank you for posting this! Your wise, compassionate and informed words need to stay at the top of this comments section and every other one attached to ignorant and irresponsible coverage of Mallory's very evident mental illness. Just because he has ONLY been officially diagnosed with Bipolar 2, does not suggest that there aren't other mental illnesses he has yet to be properly diagnosed with. I happen to agree w/you re: D.I.D. playing a role, (as well as possible caffeine/stimulant-induced psychosis...)

Lol, nothing about his actions suggest he has DID. He’s a pathological, vindictive liar and probably has a personality disorder, but DID? I very much doubt it.

"He's still a brilliant writer." Well, that's just your opinion, man. I read the novel long before I knew anything about the author, and thought the massive hype around the book was incredibly overblown. The narrative leans, from time to time, on purple prose, and the story didn't seem any more exceptional than the vast majority of psychological thrillers out there--in fact, I'd place it squarely in the middle of the pack in that genre. But nothing succeeds like success, even when you're out there blowing smoke up people's tailpipes.

is this guy ever going to write a 2nd novel? Yeah, it's a strange mess what he did...whatever. Just wondered what happened to this guy? He writes a great novel...they make a movie which was good, and now: WHERE The hell is he?
Sort of like Singer Alice Fredenham: great singer, was told by Simon Cowell that she sung like liquid gold and then drops off the Internet??? Where are these People??!!!
