  • My uncle gave me an older Capri 14.2. This version had was was more accurately called "molding" instead of a "rub rail" Which makes sense, since it is unlikely stored at a dock. But, rub rail looks nice and we are going to rent this out as part of our vacation home business. The old stuff made the boat look shoddy and I want to project "Well maintained". (Plus I am a big boat sailor who has to take a hiatus to care for my dad, and I like the "fixing things" as part of that ownership.)
To be noted: I could not use pop rivets. There were none readily available in the 3/4". I am not sure those exist as "pop rivets". The screws they provided were way too big. For any boat if you ask me. But certainly for this purpose. I used 3/4" panhead stainless sheet metal screws. I drilled a pilot hole. Some came all the way through. I might cover with epoxy resin or file down. Not really a danger, but still. It was 83 degrees F that day. So a heat gun was not necessary. I used some good strong gator clamps. But really I pulled and stretched while my buddy held the lip tight to the bottom and secured the screws. Took us about 2 hours and we did every 8 inches. Get about 60 screws. Also, we decided that silicone would be overkill. Really there is no way for water to get anywhere it couldn't before. As I pointed out, I would leave the molding along the bottom and scrape, sand, and smooth the stuff off the side.
I did end up moving the starting point off center. I was left with about 10 feet of extra rub rail The kit is the Product number V11-3447 Kit. it comes with 50 feet. You can get black/ black, White/ White or either combo thereof. I paid about $250 at the beginning of the year. It seems they have come up about $100. When I wrote the company they gave me a 20% discount code.
This is not rocket science. There is plenty of lip to drill the holes. Put a slight angle on it and don't over tighten. Maybe there are rivets that would work, I didn't look. Have a friend help. Buy low octane good beer. It goes much smoother that way.
