After Shaq was announced to be the first Magic player to get a jersey retired, I looked into other franchises who've disrespected former legends in a similar way for multiple years, and why it happened.

Melo is a knick. That’s what he wanted to be and that’s his franchise. There’s bad blood between both parties and it doesn’t look like either wanted to or currently want to work it out. Sometimes getting your jersey retired isn’t only about what you did on court. Look at Nick Collison as an example.
Nah. Think all of us who followed the Lebron draft consider Carmelo to be an Orange/Nugget.
@@playc.holder6432you don’t get your number retired for getting drafted you have to be both loved and achieve something melo did neither for the team
@@playc.holder6432an orange?
When it comes to all time players that’s the only thing the conversation should be about like KD said it’s bad for the game of basketball
STAY 7
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like teams should be keeping a high bar for retiring jersey numbers. The honor should be kept for players that dedicate their careers to the franchise and bring them success, guys like Kobe and Magic for the Lakers, Jordan for the Bulls, Dirk for the Mavericks, Duncan for the Spurs, etc. At the end of the day this is entirely up to the owners, so there's no point in players who spent only half their career somewhere being upset their number isn't getting retired, especially if they left that franchise with bad blood.
Not unpopular at all, most fans would agree
How are you going to leave off OKC lifer and legend Nick Collison.
@@disgruntledtaco3640 It's honestly very unpopular. Based on my definition, no team would be retiring Lebron's number, but most fans think all three teams he's been on should retire his number and that's probably what will happen. Also, not a single player mentioned in this video should be getting their number retired, and a lot of people in the comments agree that at least a couple of them deserve it.
Those guys didn’t bring those teams Championships like LeBron did. Kyrie should get his number retired in Cleveland.
@@life0093 I was just clarifying why my original post is an unpopular opinion.
To give you my actual thoughts, I also think Cleveland should retire Lebron's number. It's a weird asterisk/exception to my rule; even though Lebron didn't dedicate his career there, the majority of Cleveland success in their entire history occurred with Lebron, so they should retire his number. But the majority of fans and analysts think the Heat and Lakers should retire his number as well and I think that's ridiculous, but the teams will probably do so anyway and I'm not going to care.
Melo is delusional. One WCF in 8 years and he's owed a jersey number retirement? Every single other example here featured a trip to the Finals or a player who was massively significant for a young or new franchise. Denver already had been to the WCF before his arrival and had been to the playoffs 14 times.
He also is/was one of the greatest Nuggets of all time in an era where the Western Conference was the dominant conference. 8 years isn’t nothing, even if he didn’t have a lot of a lot of playoff success or even his best years as a Nugget. While I think he does deserve to have his jersey retired, I also see why the Nuggets wouldn’t and have not liked Melo’s own takes on the matter.
@@ineveryuniverse3953 Because he forced his way out and only wanted to be a Knick. Watch how no Denver Nuggets fans cared about Jokic having Melo's numbers
I'm glad Melo left...Denver fans are fucking delusional.

Giannis and Ray Allen both drafted by the Bucks share #34, however Giannis will be the player whos number is retired for the team.
It is about the bigger legacy left upon the Franchise
I hope both jerseys get retired , I’m from Milwaukee so both of them were special to me
Yea true but Ray could of also gotten retired in Seattle and won in Boston. I see the point for the bucks though
Regardless, Ray will probably get his jersey retired by the Celtics
Terry Cummings wore it
But yall don't care because apparently nothing noteworthy happened before 1996...
@@austinlink68 Hell if he stayed a bit longer even the Heat could’ve retired Ray Allen’s #34
Man, what's the requirement for even retiring a jersey atp? It's the organization's decision to honor a player, and if that player leaves a foul taste in their mouth because he didn't want to be there any longer, why should they retire it? Players wanting to be honored by the same organization they no longer wanted to be a part of seems weird and entitled.
Similar thing happened to the Chicago Bulls & Derrick Rose, when the organization were giving the #1 jersey to Michael Carter Williams, only until the fans gave enough backlash that he changed his jersey number to #7
Difference is drose is actually loved in chicago
I can't remember that but I can't believe that ever happened.
A native son, MVP, 1st pick overall, -should be top 75,- and best player since the best player in the franchsie organization and sport overall would and should automatically deserve better than that.
Derrick Rose = 21st Century Bob Love
Denzel valentine wore 45 even though Jordan wore it for a small amount of time
And I remember that same year Anthony morrow tried the number 1 and fans shoot him down quickly. #11 it was. And no one has tried since
You forgot the Pistons giving out the #1 to AI and T-Mac after Billups helped win them a chip, and then they retired it after the fact. Great vid though.
I think with AI the pistons for some reason thought he would be similar quality to Billups, I guess the number 1 for the pistons could have became iconic if that happened.
@@Sorry-sk4ktIn A.I.’s case, Rodney Stuckey already had the number 3 and offered to give it to him but the NBA wouldn’t allow it since you couldn’t just change numbers in the middle of the season.
@@akeme25 that makes sense then
This is such a a tough subject, because retiring jerseys is such a big deal, and I don't think they should just be retired that easily. I believe franchises should retire jerseys if it's for elite players that led their team to the finals or to rings/continued success for years or if they really meant something to the organization as a whole. I believe OKC will retire KD and WB jerseys due to that finals run in 2012 and the consistent success they had for years.
If they retire KDs jersey we will riot, noone would like that

This video really just illuminates how ridiculous Melo sounds. Literally nobody from this era has their jersey retired rn. Aside from LeBron all of their numbers have been reused at some point. They just didn’t have another guy like Jokić wearing it. Even Kawhi’s 2 has been reworn since him leaving Toronto, and he bought them their first title!
bro, Kawhi never wanted to be a raptor, he was a rental and his greatness gave them a ring, they implored him to stay but he wanted LA
D-Wade?? Dirk??
Cleveland is most likely gonna retire 23 for lebron Miami retired 6 but that was becoming Bill Russell
@@ColdHoops I forgot about them, but you can’t even count Dirk bc he was lifer who started and retired as a Mav and bought them a title. And changed the game more than Melo. Their resumes aren’t even close to the same. I’m moreso thinking about active legends are recently retired ones.
@@Justinian43 I’m not saying they’re wrong for letting others wear it after he left. I’m simply pointing out how dumb Melo sounds by bitching about his number being given away. Virtually every player who’s still playing from this era has had their number given away after leaving for a new team. It doesn’t mean their numbers won’t be retired at some point. The Raptors should definitely retire Kawhi’s number, as well as Chris Bosh, and Vince Carter. I highly doubt that franchise will see any success anytime soon and have enough legends to fill that banner area up.

the best part is, that Jokic wouldnt care if they retire both number 15 jersey´s ... JOKIC REALLY DOESNT CARE and is still the best player in the world
He certainly is one of the best, and I do find the fact that basketball is almost like a job to him and despite that he's dominant. It's like opposite of mamba mentality but it works so well for him
PJ Dozier is a OKC legend 🤣
Seriously, some of these players/fans need to realize that people move on with their lives, and the vast majority of players simply don’t deserve to have their jersey retired, especially if they parted on bad terms. Would you get mad at your ex for dating other people after y’all broke up too?
Not the same thing lol 😂
Melo was great, but not deserving of jersey retirement imo. He only played 6 years in Denver and only got them to the WCF once. No rings, and his scoring title came in New York. Even without Jokic being much greater than Melo, I still don't think his jersey should be retired, at least not in Denver.
You have to look at it from a Denver Nuggets franchise standpoint. And from that standpoint, he did do enough. Just for comparison, Melo played there longer than Dikembe & had more playoff success than him, yet #55 is (rightfully) retired.
A two time mvp and fmvp of the franchises only ring isn't good enough to get a jersey retired? Delusional
@@Rosinronin Friendly fire. I said MELO shouldn't have his jersey retired, not Jokic. Jokic absolutely will have his jersey retired in Denver.
Dude got them on lucky ring relax
@@easeman8732yea but number 15 got the Nuggets a Championship, and Jokic is the Nuggets franchise player why would the Nuggets retire his number for a player that didn't even get him anything when the player that won them their first Championship wear 15, the Nuggets would have to ask Jokic for permission or wait til Jokic to retire then retire 15, then retire 15 again for Melo.
I love Melo the player, but I also think that if you have to ask a team to retire your jersey or make a fuss about it, there’s probably reasons why it hasn’t been done yet. A jersey retirement is about what you did for that franchise and how they much they value your contribution. Jokic has already done much more than Melo for Denver. It was just unlucky that he chose 15. I don’t see why he’s not more upset at the Knicks. That’s where he wanted to be, that’s where he went, and he’s got connections and ties to NYC. They should be more on the hook for retiring his jersey than Denver who he asked out of. Regardless though, if either team does retire his jersey now, it’ll just look bad on either side imo. It would be a pitty retirement, and I personally wouldn’t want that lol.

Jokic wasn't even the first Nugget to wear #15 post-Melo. Anthony Randolph wore it in 13-14. And it was Jokic's number since he was a kid. Melo is just extremely full of himself, which is why he left Denver.
Imgine rebuild with a guy who tried to win just because you didn't give him no types of help
Carmelo's unseen hand in making sure Linsanity didnt last in NY long enough for it to build into something consistent has really left me with thinking really negatively over Carmelo's Legacy.
Not to mention this dude never even came close to making the Knicks into a championship contender during his run, part of me feels like he just was comfortable making his money and playing in NY city which is always littered with Celebrities on the sidelines similar to the Lakers Sidelines.
I know Indy was the better team, but Knicks really underperformed in that 2013 2nd round series
My favorite Melo Knick highlight was seeing him get blocked by Roy Hibbert in the 2013 playoffs.

Melo never did anything for the nuggets other than requesting that trade, it gave them Jamal Murray
May be a hot take but, a finals appearance with the team is the bare minimum for getting your jersey retired, and even then it’s not always enough
the vince carter dunking is overrated clip is insane and idk how ive never seen it before
This was a great vid. Definitely gets the basketball minds thinking
Your number isn't sacred until it is. Simple as that. On just the Lakers alone there plenty of guys that have or should have their number retired but other players wore out after they left or retired; Gail Goodrich, Jamal Wilkes, Michael Cooper, Lamar Odom, Byron Scott, Glenn Rice, and AC Green.
I remember watching the Lakers wondering who number 6 was and realized it was Eddie Jones. I didn't know they retired Gail's number that offseason. I promptly went to my NBA Live 96 and created a new Eddie with number 6. I hated overlapping numbers lol😅
As someone who is a Denver fan and Carmelo is my favorite player of all time and was the reason I fell in love with basketball, he deserves this. He made his choice he's a New York Knick, not a Nugget.

I am sorry, Melo was cool, but 15 belongs to Nikola Jokic.
A back to back MVP and led the Nuggets to a finals championship.
Melo scored a bunch, played very limited defense, and never passed until he decided he wanted to be traded to NY.
Now that taylor is gone when the f**k are the t-wolves gonna retire KG’s 21
The Collin Sexton mention hurts my heart because I still believe in the guy, but yeah Cleveland was jacked up letting him take that number over hurt feelings.
Kg got his # retired because he wona ring also dpoy while people could make the case he was the best player on the team
Can you make a video about all the times teams ran weird posistion expiraments like sochan at pg?
Didn’t watch the video yet, but I really hope y’all don’t believe that the Nuggets knew that Jokic would be a superstar… and also we can’t erase history and Carmelo’s wanted to leave Denver badly and he has not done enough to have his jersey retired by that franchise man. Hall of famer and fun player to watch but just no. Someone like Vince Carter is a different scenario because the fact of the matter is that if Vince never played for Toronto, there would be no Canada team in the nba and it would’ve just been an experience to have two Canada teams in the NBA 💯
it's actually massive respect, they both legendary right now
#15 should be exclusively retired for Jokic and only Jokic. Melo burned all bridges with the Nuggets harboring trade talks to NY ever since seeing the Heatles formed in Miami. When you leave or get traded on bad terms from said team, you shouldn't feel salty for not getting your jersey retired. Also Jokic was a second round pick and the Nuggets probably gave him the number not expecting him to be the MVP caliber type player right now.
Never mind the fact that Jokic didn’t even play in the NBA until 2015. They clearly gave him Melo’s number as an afterthought.
Do you guys think the nuggets will put Jokic's name or Melo's name when they eventually retire #15 😂😂😂? Man Melo is delusional
This is why you gotta choose a random number that nobody else would want. Take 68 or 79 or some crap like that and nobody will take it after you leave.

Some of the things Carmelo Anthony has seen during his last 4 years:
- Anthony’s dominant title run with the Lakers (2020)
- Melo’s Rookie of the Year season
- one championship for Denver
- 2 MVPs for their number 15

I had to do a double take, listen to this part multiple times, and realize that yes it has been almost 8 whole years since he joined the Warriors. I remember when it first happened the absolute shock
Imagine in organization drafting a second round player during a Taco Bell commercial saying hmmmm he’s gonna be a part of our evil plan to erase the history of Carmelo Anthony by giving him his jersey number. See how dumb that sounds??
Jokic wore 15 before and he wanted that number when he came, also Melo is a certified Knick so no harm done
Jokic and Alex English are the greatest nuggets of all time😁
Rodney Stuckey wearing Ben Wallace’s number but the Pistons not letting Allen Iverson wear number 3 haunts me at night still.
Makes sense to me, Rodney drafted in 2007 while Iverson got there in 2008
The Broncos retired 18 twice, wouldn’t surprise me if the Nuggets followed suit. Also Ray Allen got the Melo-Jokic treatment in Milwaukee
Would've loved for you to talk about Jermaine Oneal, very deserving for the Pacers
There is no intentional disrespect involved, melo is more of a Knick anyway and Jokic has been on record saying he’s been wearing 15 all his life. he came to the team, requested 15 and since it wasn’t retired they gave it to him, Jokic has done more for the nuggets than Melo ever has and if anybody is going to retire 15 it’s gonna be the Knicks
Great video Dom! Maybe I would add Gilbert Arenas to the list, he had a dramatic exit with the Wizards and all.
Melo left the nuggets high and dry and they had already used the #15 before Jokic... it didnt mean anything and the city of Denver owes him nothing
As an OKC fan: if we had won a title with KD, I wouldn’t be that mad if he left for a bigger market. But it’s not just that he left, it’s how he left and where he went. He joined the 73-9 warriors in what would get him an easy ring.
Now it’s been years since KD left so I’m willing to forgive him if he did come back, but he’s def not as hated in my eyes anymore
Jokic was drafted during a Taco Bell commercial no one expected this
The only one being disrespected are Nuggets and Denver itself.
Melo choose his fate. He choose Knicks. He called his home NYC. He rebranded to #7 seem to me he was the one who wanted to erased Denver from his history and not the other way around. Melo wanted the damn Knicks, ask your damn Knicks to retire your #7.
The best thing Melo ever did for this franchise was getting traded so they get the pick to Jamal Murray.
Bruce is a bigger Nuggets legends than Melo ever was.
Also it's so dam stupid to "lock" a number while the player is still active. I would retire a number after the player officially retire and decided to hang the sneakers. There's no damn point on forbidden players from wearing a number from a player who is still active for other teams. This brainless aurgement of "Player left team for another one. Nobody can wear that number anymore". Just read it and tell me how that doesn't sound stupid.
Vince carter really told them people he doesn’t wanna dunk anymore. Wow🤣🤣🤣🤣
Woah this is wild
As a Raptors fan, I can look past Carter's exit and think he should probably have his jersey retired based on his impact to Canadian basketball.
Lowry and DeRozan have to be first two though since they were the first to lead the team to consistent playoff success.
Man, how’d you forget KG’s 21 in MN? Great video tho
Melo wasn’t disrespected, he spent the majority of his prime in NY and literally didn’t do anything worthy of having his Jersey retired in Denver. He was a fun player, and a WCF is cool, but it’s not overly impressive and he forced his way to NY. Imagine being so egocentric and narcissistic that you assume a team you really didn’t do anything of note for is dishing shade at you by giving a second round pick, who obviously wasn’t expected to become an MVP and wore 15 most of his life, your number 5 years after you left the team. Maybe if Melo could think outside of his own head and not only have been concerned with Melo his whole career he could have done something of note in Denver. The difference between Lebron and Melo was never talent or ability, it was Basketball IQ and unselfishness.

How happy is Shaq that Dwight Howard didn’t get his jersey retired
Melo absolutely do not deserve his jersey retired in Denver Jokic did 10 times more then he did there it’s not even close
I personally think Jersey retirements, need rules like at least 8+ years for playing on the team, and other conditions.
Speaking as a soccer fan, while I 100% understand and agree with the feeling of disrespect of having your legendary jersey no. being handed off to no-name players, I would think that it's quite honourable to have your number passed on to another legend/great player as a way of continuing a legacy that you started. You see this sort of tradition with a number of soccer clubs e.g. Manchester United and Real Madrid with the no. 7 jersey, Barcelona with the no. 10. So I get that having your jersey retired may be the most preferable option, but it surely shouldn't be a bad thing for a franchise to hand out a particular number to some of it's greatest players, should I? Like, instead of doubly retiring 15, the Nuggets could just make sure to hand it over only to the next great franchise player that comes after Jokic.
Bro McGrady shouldn't have had the No.1 Jersey in the first place... That was Penny's number & it should have been retired given how important he was to them in that Shaq era.
Dwight might ne next??? I think orlando should...or am i wrong? Did he not do enough?
there is absolutely no reason why denver should retire 15 for carmelo anthony
forced his way out, never won a championship for them. carmelo might have eventually got a ring, but he will be seen as the loser he is forever
Imo the only ways you should ever have your jersey retired is if you're an integral part of championship wins, or if you've played 10-15+ years for just that single team and are loved by the city. Melo has done neither. If 1 WCF in 8 years is jersey reitrement worthy, we'll be out of numbers to give to players in a couple years.
Vince Carter 'allegedly'' forced himself out?! Dude was giving zero effort, and opposition players Nug plays. James Harden has been more reasonable in his trade requests. Now Melo wants his jersey # respected? 😂😂😂😂😂
I would say the biggest disrespect is the fact the Wolves never retiring Kevin Garnett's jersey and then not letting anyone else wear it. I don't think there has been another 21 in Minnesota and the fact it's not retired is just disrespect.
Joker wore 15 in the euro league by the way
Denver is fucking disrespectful to Melo, there’s no Nuggets without Carmelo Anthony falling to them and no star player in their prime wants to waste years on a rebuild. They gave the number to Jokic because they thought he was just another eurobum but he happened to turn out to be good. New York should do right by Melo and retire his number and honestly, nobody has worn number 7 in New York since Melo which is pretty respectful from the Knicks.
At least my bulls have enough common sense to not give #1 away
The disrespect for Jokic in this video is insane, melo has absolutely nothing remotely close to a slimmer of a chance of having the 15 core-retired or anything close to that, Jokic has done INFINITELY more
The Bulls have been notorious for not retiring guys numbers.
Norm Van Lier - 3 time All-Star. 8 time All-Defensive. Was the starting point guard on the 1975 team that almost got the NBA Finals.
Chet Walker - 7 time All-Star (4 with the Bulls). Helped the Bulls get to within 1 game of the NBA Finals in 1975, the one and only time they got that close until MJ arrived 10 years later.
Tom Boerwinkle - spent 10 years on the Bulls, his whole career. Despite being a role player was loved by the fans.
Dennis Rodman - third best player on 3 Championship winning teams
John Paxon - Was there for 9 years and hit the Championship winning shot in Game 6 in 1993. If he missed that shot the Bulls go to a Game 7 on the road.
Horace Grant - third best player on 3 Championship winning teams
Tony Kukoc - indispensable part of 3 Championship winning teams
Jo Noah - Defensive Player of the Year. 2 time All-Star. Played harder than anyone else from his Bulls era.
Kirk Hinrich - 3rd in all-time games played for the Bulls. Helped the Bulls get to the Playoffs after 6 years of being the worst team in the league.
Loul Deng - 2 time All-Star. Played for the Bulls for 9 years. Wanted to be a Bulls for his entire career, didn’t leave by choice.
They’ve only retired four numbers.
4 - Jerry Sloan
10 - Bob Love
23 - Michael Jordan
33 - Scottie Pippen
On the topic of Melo, I think the Nuggets should retire #15 for him, but let Jokic continue to wear it like the Pistons did with Greg Monroe when they retired #10 for Dennis Rodman, then retire the number again for Jokic, like the Knicks have for, ironically, #15.
People have to understand that every team sets their own standards for retiring a player’s jersey.
Worth noting that KG hasnt had his number retired by the Timberwolves yet.
Notre dame legend Demetrius Jackson mentioned
The New York Knicks have #15 retired for two different players. The first player is Dick McGuire (1949-1957) and the second player is Earl Monroe (1971-1980). The Knicks may be the only franchise to have done that if I am not mistaken. Maybe the Denver Nuggets will do the same with Carmelo Anthony and Nikola Jokić someday. It makes sense to me but due to Carmelo’s contentious departure from Denver in 2011, it may not happen, the honor will solely go to Nikola Jokić more than likely.
Jersey retirements should be reserved for players who are integral to the franchise's history or brought them tons of success. Carter deserves retirement for the former, KD probably does for the latter even if he never could win a ring for OKC. For a lot of the other guys? Sorry, don't think T-Mac or Melo did enough to warrent retirements.
As a raptor fan Austin rivers needs to stfu we should never retire that man’s number
Watching a whole video on star players jerseys getting disrespected is so funny knowing the heat retired udonis fucking haslem’s number
9:13 I don’t think that it’s clear Melo won’t get his number retired. Sure it’s very rear for 2 people to get the same number retired but is has happened before. The Yankees retired the number 8 for two different players, those being Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra. So while it probably won’t happen, just because 15 is getting retired for Jokic doesn’t mean it can’t also be retired for Melo.
Melo showed Denver maps and compasses exist, Jokic showed us how to not just use one but become one. Melo persuaded some talent to stop by seriously to consider their options here and for a period brought in favorable media press. Joker has cultivated a winning culture of nobody wanting to leave unless massive, unwarranted money is dangled and I can easily say he's responsible in a major way why them teams coming out the Pepsi Center are Denver's prized personel, making people almost forget about the horrible stench of whatever Chef Russ is cooking and the Rockies just suck. Joker/Murray are must see TV for me.
As a thunder fan, I hope they never retire it
Joker led the nuggets to a championship, something melo never succeeded in.
if vince stayed and played with bosh longer they would’ve been pretty good
