- كان يوسف الابن المفضّل ليعقوب أبيه. فكان أشقاؤه العشرة أبناء يعقوب من امرأته الأخرى والجاريتَين يحسدون شقيقهم الصغير بشدّة. ولقد حلم يوسف حلماً مفاده أن أسرته بكاملها سجدت له. فأثار هذا غضب الأشقاء. وعندما أعطى يعقوبُ يوسفَ قميصاً ذا ألوان إظهاراً لسلطته تآمر الأشقاء لقتله. ولكنَّ يهوذا أقنعهم بعدم قتله بل بِبَيْعِهِ عبداً إلى مصر. وفي مصر نجح يوسف نجاحاً باهراً. ووكَّله سيِّده فوطيفار على كلّ بيته. وحينما حاولت زوجة فوطيفار إغواء يوسف الذي رفض الانجرار صرخت متّهمةً إيّاه بمحاولة اغتصابها. ولم يكن أمام فوطيفار خياراً سوى إلقاء يوسف في السجن. ولكن، حتّى في السجن، برهن يوسف عن حسن أخلاقه وأمانته وإخلاصه وأهليّته بالثقة. وفي ظروف لا إمكان لغير الله بترتيبها يفسِّر يوسف حلمَي خبّاز فرعون وساقيه اللذَين ألقيا في السجن معه ويُخْبَرُ فرعون بقدرة يوسف على تفسير الأحلام. ولم يستطع أحد في المملكة أن يفسّر حلمَي فرعون سوى يوسف بعون الله الجبّار. ولقد لاحظ فرعون إخلاص يوسف الخالي من المكر وأقامه سيّداً على كلّ أرض مصر. وحينما وقعت المجاعة العظيمة كان يوسف قد خزن من الحبوب ما يكفي لإطعام كل المصريين لسبع سنين. ولقد جاءت عائلة يوسف لتشتري حبوباً من يوسف. وإذ أدركوا أخيراً أنَّه شقيقهم الأصغر الذي باعوه إلى العبودية ظنّوا أنّه سيقتلهم جميعاً. ولكنَّ يوسف قال لهم إنَّهم قصدوا به شرّا حوَّله الله إلى خير. لقد أرسِل إلى مصر لكي ينقذ عائلته لاحقاً وهو أدرك أنّ يد الله أنقذتهم. كان عليه أن يمرّ في كلّ ما مرّ به ليصل إلى يد فرعون اليمنى لكي تكون له القوّة لإنقاذ عائلته. ولقد انتقل يعقوب وبنوه مع كلّ ما يملكونه إلى مصر للإقامة في جاسان. وهكذا صار ممكناً أن تتحقّق نبوءة الله لإبراهيم بأنّ عائلته سوف تُسْتعبد في مصر أربعمائة سنة.
Joseph was the favorite of his father, Jacob. His ten brothers, by Jacob's other wife and concubines, were terribly jealous and envied their younger brother. Joseph had a dream that his whole family would bow down to him. This made the brothers furious. When Jacob gives Joseph a multicolored coat to show his authority the brothers plot to kill him, but Judah convinces them not kill him but to sell Joseph into slavery in Egypt. In Egypt Joseph excels. His owner, Potipher, puts him in charge of all his household. When Potipher's wife tries to seduce Joseph and he refuses she cries 'rape' and Potifpher has no choice but to throw Joseph in prison for life. But Joseph proves his good character and is faithful to be honest and trustworthy even in prison. In circumstances that only God could arrange, Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh's baker and his cup bearer, both thrown into prison with him, and is brought to the attention of Pharaoh for his ability to interpret dreams. No one in the kingdom can interpret Pharaoh's dreams but Joseph can by the help of Almighty God. Pharaoh recognizes the guileless honesty of Joseph and puts him in charge of all the land of Egypt. When the great famine comes Joseph has stored up grain enough to feed all the Egyptians for seven long years. Joseph's family comes to buy grain from Joseph. Finally recognizing him as their younger brother that they sold into slavery they are sure he will kill them all. Instead Joseph tells them that what they meant for evil God has worked for good. He was sent to Egypt to eventually save his family and he recognizes the hand of God in their salvation. He had to go through all he went through to rise to the right hand of Pharaoh in order to have the power to save his family. Jacob and his sons and all they own move to Egypt and settle in Goshen. And the prophecy given to Abraham that his family would be slaves in Egypt for 400 years is now able to come true.
