- The (R)evolution of Indigenous Food Systems of North America: Presentation and Cooking Demonstration
Chef Sean Sherman (Oglala Lakota), Co-Founder and Co-Owner, The Sioux Chef and Owamni by The Sioux Chef Restaurant, Minneapolis, MN
This presentation was made at the Fifth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition on May 25, 2022, in Prior Lake, Minnesota. This annual conference series brings together tribal officials, researchers, practitioners, funders and others to discuss the current state of Indigenous and academic scientific knowledge about Native nutrition, dietary health, and food science, and identify new areas of work. It was sponsored by the University of Minnesota Healthy Foods Healthy Lives Institute and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC). More information is available at www.nativenutrition.umn.edu.
Chef Sean is an amazing person with boundless energy. Who would have a thought a chef would be the leader of the next revolution in native history. May God bless him in every way. 🙏
Thank you for your work! I cried. I hope Native Americans can heal, connect with their roots and get more rights.
As a vegan I appreciate Sean's recipes because they illustrate how the plants around us have so much to offer and how to incorporate unique flavors😊
I'm so grateful for Sean Sherman's work. It's so funny that he mentioned Spanish, because it would be interesting if Mr. Sherman could work with José Andres, who also does a lot of work to bring nutrition and meals to those struck by disasters through World Central Kitchens, to funnel support to local peoples on the ground ensuring their communities are nourished. It would be a weird collaboration for sure, given Spain's history of colonization and treatment of indigenous peoples, but maybe with Sean's experience with Spanish recipes, it could be in interesting, I dunno, book or podcast, the proceeds of which could be donated to tribal community nutrition programs or disaster relief. They could recommend ways to deal with invasive species, like Asian carp, or something like that. Given our future might be turning to insects to be a part of our diet, Sean's probably got a lot of knowledge of how to nourish using that food chain, perhaps José too.
Sounds like you should work with one of them. ❤
We’re we really gunna read all this 😂😂😂😂
