I'm perplexed as to why people would tell you not to have children. For me your situation would actually be the very best lifestyle to bring them into. What better way of life than to have parents at home with the ability to bring them up, teach them how to fend for themselves, and to be healthy. People need to understand that wealth isn't about the things we can buy, but instead the knowledge we can pass on to survive. My two boys are grown, with my eldest now having children of his own. When we all get together they talk about their chores helping out raising our horses, looking after the dogs, and the chickens. They both hunt, fish, forage, cook, and my youngest makes jams, preserves, pickles, and ferments. They both have a firm grounding in herbal medicine and identifying wild plants for that, and it all comes from me, which in turn came from my Grandad. Very rarely do they talk about anything else other than bike ride adventures. Children remember the time you spent with them, not what you spent on them...if you do your job right as a parent xx

I totally agree! What a great place to grow up! They would have farm chores and a sense of responsibility early on. They would know they are needed and their help was important. Nothing better in this world. Check out this website where the parents toss all kinds of farm chores on their four girls. They're growing up wonderfully! www.fivemarysfarms.com

my niece's and nephew used to visit when they were little, we grew salad crops together and they ate every bit, but wouldn't touch it at home, they wanted computers and phones, here they wanted to run the fields with our dog and go on dark night Star walks and tell Ghost stories before sleeping like logs all night..

Well done! I myself live in a small one bedroom cottage up in the mountains on about 4.5 acres of land in the south west of Ireland. Like you, I do my best to be self-sufficient. I think if you have the 4 key elements: a water source to drink from, land to grow food on, a shelter to protect you and a renewable heat source....then everything else in life is secondary. Keep up the good work.

@@danielleclair1360 I drilled a new well on my property and the water is tested. If you have an existing well on your property but it hasn't been used for a long time, I'd recommend having it tested just in case. The location of an existing well should give you an idea of the water quality. For example, if the well is located near a boundary with your neighbours field and that neighbour spreads cow dung on his/her land, it could contaminate the source. Also, if the well is near any septic tank. So no harm in having it tested for peace of mind.

I agree absolutely! I believe firmly in doing whatever you want to do, and being happy in those decisions. What's right for you isn't necessarily for everyone else, or vice versa. Listen to others, then do what you want, not what they want - and actually, it's not being selfish. We're only here once, so I think it's important to follow the dream.

everything and was salt of the earth. I absolutely Loved every minute of the day's I spent with them, they taught me so much and this grounded me in many ways. Forever humble. 💕💞❤️

I'm a young 51 and can still get about fine and do much of the physical labor necessary to leave a smaller footprint on the good earth. You've got a good head on you. i bought a cottage in Co.Clare in 2007. 1 acre, having a stream which runs a 50 watt turbine to charge batterues, LED lights. and a water wheel to pump water to the cottage.
The weather and remoteness, makes the rural irish happy to help each other. have not been able to get back there since 2018. the only place in the world i have ever felt at home.
the cottage was built about 1855. I wanted to keep the attitude of doing every thing by hand and the only power tool was a cordless drill powered from stream charging a car battery. the rayburn stove dois heating and hot water through gravity circulation. also have rights to cut peat, but have not tried it yet.
edit: i am in tears wishing i could go home.

Just discovered your channel - this is my new favourite youtube channel. :) I think you made a very brave and healthy move out of the rat race and out of stressful city life. A few years ago, I did a similar thing, but only for a about 1 year. We sold everything at home in Austria and I moved to Spain with my partner at that time, to live in a small house with a big garden around, having chicken and growing a lot of our own food. The adventure lasted for only 1 year because we split up. I returned back home, back to my stress-loaded 9-to-6 job. 3 years later I moved abroad again, this time to Switzerland, to get another stress-loaded office job in a city. This is where I am the moment, but of course I´m constantly thinking of escaping the rat race once more and start a new garden project on my own. I think once you quit the rat race for a while, you'll have a difficult time to fit in again (like me at the moment). I wish you all the best, your videos are so inspiring, full of totally pleasant vibes.

I find your lifestyle refreshing. A bit hard, yes, but i can understand how satisfying it must be for you. I have a longing for a simpler life as well.. I understand and can appreciate this journey that you are on....What i cannot understand (or BELIEVE) is how nay-saying people feel that they can advise you on something so personal as to whether or not to have children... i think that simplifying and centering your life would make one a better parent, rather than a worse one. You will have the opportunity ( with a like-minded spouse) to show your children the beauty of nature and the joy in simple things..a nest of songbird eggs, dew on the grass shining in the morning sun, bean sprouts popping up out of the soil, the smell of spring, potatoes hiding in their hills, baby chicks, lambs, what-have-you. You keep on your own path, doing what makes you happy.

You're not weird, I too don't live near my family and haven't since I was 18 years old. But you know what, I'm actually closer to my family than I was when I lived right near them. I've always been a deep introvert so living alone has just been more at peace for me, I even now work from home, so unless I go to the doctor I rarely leave my home and I'm quite content. Folks might look oddly at me but it's just me and I'm quite content in my home.
Thanks for sharing your videos, your land reminds me so much of the small farm I grew up on, we had a big garden as well and there's nothing like fresh, homegrown veggies! Happy New year . Been watching your channel and listening. Not sure I could do the same by myself. My partner and I are in the woods of Nova Scotia, Canada but not far from town and not as isolated. We use the internet to generate an income after purchasing the property outright like you. It takes a load off your shoulders not having mortgage, so we work to live not live to work. First time we are truly enjoying our life after moving from a major city like Toronto. This will be our sixth year out here and delighted with the personal interaction with many people in our town of 400 people although we are both introverts. In Toronto you don't even make eye contact with people. In a small town residents says hello, many know us by our first name and vice versa. Keep your videos coming. You were off for awhile and we thought you had thrown in the towel but it's good to receive another video from the Irish countryside. It was minus 12°C over here last night so don't complain of the cold...lol. Chuck another log in the fireplace and be thankful. You have a lovely piece of heaven. Cheers for now.

Good day to you. A few comments ~ wearing a scarf makes you warmer- in the house. We heat with wood also and have been for years. We use a similar set up as you but the fan is a heatilator which goes in the stack and catches wasted heat. So the house - an old farmhouse has chillier pockets. About 35 yrs. Ago, I found a small cottage on a 13 acre estate ( there was another house on the property) it was fairly close to town if you needed interaction with others or supplies. I never moved back to the city life. I am still in the country but a smaller property (5 acres) but a but more isolated maybe. Fairly close to town but a much smaller town. I make my supply/grocery store runs a couple times a month for larger things we have a few shops just a couple miles away for every day staples. We can and dehydrate, grow a big garden, raise ducks for the delicious eggs (we do not butcher them although had to thin out the drakes this year 😧🤢 yuck) and cook something every day. In other words - no fast food. A suggestion, we have something here in USA called a point well which you put in yourself. Total cost here is about $350 American. Thousands of dollars less than a drilled well. It's a shallow well. Depends on your water table. You never have to worry about an electric well pump going out. Might be something to consider when you have your summer help. Available at local farm stores. My opinion, people who are ok with their own company - more balanced. Obviously, we all need occasional outside interaction but you don't find validation from another person - joy is present inside of you. Looking forward to the next video.

I have found the best way to make things work well in a self-sufficient situation is to get as many uses out of an object as possible - example: if you have a vehicle, it needs to be more than a means of transportation for you. It also needs to haul heavy things for you and it needs to help you drag heavy things out of a forest and into a work space, maybe it also can split logs for you - example: a container of any kind (bag, box, bottle, can, etc) needs to have more than one use and lasts well - example: roofing materials such as thatch had a good use in the field before it was processed for the roofing phase and when that's finished, that material is returned to the compost and then back to the soil - example: for every one tree you cut down, you plant three that grow quickly and can be burned or chipped for compost or in someway can be used to benefit you, the soil and the environment. You need to start thinking in three dimensions. Everything you need, you can find a way to provide for yourself. It's essential that you start out adaptable and flexible, and yes, you need a small amount of income to buy those things that you can't make for yourself.

Thank you for taking the time to update us. I just found your videos about a week ago so doesn't feel so long for me.😊. I found the fact that people are telling you not to have children because of your life choice a curious thing. I raised 3 fine men in a rural situation, home schooled them to boot and they are very well rounded individuals. I found that with a little effort you can make sure they have friends and culture. I have been using permaculture on my three Acer's, here in Michigan, for the past 10 years and I am 61 now and a female. So again blowing away allot of the naysayers about women and this way of life. I believe a return to simpler ways of living is making a strong showing, if my children and their wives and my nieces and nephews are any indication. So inspired by you and the youth today!

My wife and I moved into a semi derelict cottage on the North Yorkshire Moors in 1981, coming there from a big city was a big change, many funny things happened and some not so funny. Our first winter there was the worst in living memory! 10 foot snow drifts and that was up against the front door, which was at the side of the house, we had to get out thru the rear bathroom window!! One caution I would point out, make very sure rodents do not get into your water supply. But you are the right age to take on this Life Style, we were in our mid 20s, and we learned So Much about Life Skills. So have a Great Time! In later years you will look back and say to yourself 'I'm glad that I did it.'

Couple of points, you would make a great father and provide a wonderful childhood for any children fortunate to have you for a father, if the opportunity arises, be confident and courageous.
Many old Irish cottages were over the past 50 years, plastered on the outside. This was a mistake, as the cottages were built without damp proof membranes, and were designed so rising damp would dry out naturally. With the outside walls rendered, or pointed with cement, it keeps the damp within the walls to make its appearance on the inner walls.
My favorite poem from childhood was The Lake Isle of Innisfree, you in Sligo, are not so far from Innisfree, and are living the life I always dreamt of living.
There has been a really serious decline in bio diversity in Ireland over the past 30 years, many once common species of birds are well on the way to extinction. The situation is more acute here, than in the UK. The Irish Nightjar for example, is now likely extinct. Ireland is now the only country in Europe without a population of Nightjars. Why is Ireland losing so many species? It is obviously something to do with declining insects, but what exactly is killing the insects?
You have a wonderful opportunity to observe what is happening and make your own speculations.
I planted some English Oaks, in the south east of the country, they are doing well and a providing a haven for wildlife, but in the rest of Ireland, plant the Irish Oak, they will be more suited to the soil and the climate.
Spanish Chestnuts are useful, their roots are deep and their leaves mulch very quickly enriching the topsoil. It is also good for coppicing, fencing and woodwork. Though it is out of its comfort zone in the British Isles and its nuts don't ripen for humans, though wildlife will take them.
Any Ash die back in Sligo? Hopefully there will be some Ash trees that will have a genetic resistance to the disease.
A happy new year to you, and look forward to more news from Mossy Bottom.

Very nice update video. I think you are on the right track with the furniture making and restoration. There is nearly always a market for rustic furniture no matter where in the world you are. Rustic furniture can be made with reclaimed wood or if that is hard to come by you can use dimensional lumber and distress it as needed. It would not make you wealthy but would keep some money coming in. You just need a small shed with electric hook up, a few basic tools and you are in business. Keep your eyes out for a used pickup truck or van that you can use for furniture deliveries and odd jobs around your land. Look forward to seeing the cottage even if it is in a state of ruin, I would guess a lot of them were abandoned because of the struggle to keep them maintained properly. A tin roof is easier/cheaper to maintain vs. thatch, modern interiors more comfortable (indoor facilities, plumbing, electric) than traditional etc. Hang in there!

My partner and I have a house on a quarter acre which we had gardened with great intensity but felt an intense 'need' to plant trees - so bought an acre and a half of overgrazed paddock and started planting; Four years later trees galore growing well including many fruit trees. We have used permaculture principles but not rigidly -as there is always something unique about any ecology and intuition is so important - gardening is also as much an 'art' as a 'science'. You are clearly an insightful young man and we will watch your 'progress' into the future and HOPE one day you may get that electric car you wish for !! All good things in 2019 !!

It was also give courage (as you mentioned) to those of us who are considering similar ventures not to turn these structures down. Really enjoying the videos. Thanks

I am German, moved to Ireland 2000, lived in Co. Kildare, almost 20 years I have a 20 year old daughter who still lives in Ireland. There were a couple of personal reason why I moved back to Germany. I love the mentality of irish people, very different to Germans. I feel in my heart more irish than german. There is not a single day were I'm not thinking about Ireland. You are a lovely man, gentle soul with a beautiful heart. I wish you all the love & happiness in the world. Lol:)

Happy New Year and delighted you are o.k and continuing living your life the way you feel is you...Don't listen to those who say never have children... my goodness this is the future and kids would love it and grow up as 'whole' human beings.

I haven't had a chance to like and comment on all your videos that I've watched but I would like to say I've enjoyed every one that I've had a chance to read. They are always very good! I would like to say that I'm glad you are taking the time to experience this life. You are doing well! The day you are ready for a family, many people off grid in the U.S. have their families off grid with them also. I think renovating a ruin cottage would be very satisfying! Hope you ignore any negativity you hear.... there's always people that can't see the forest for the trees.😁 Keep up the good work! I plan to go to Ireland one day in the near future. Looking forward for a visit!

I'm totally on your wavelength and fingers crossed slowly edging toward a simpler life. I'm doing it in reverse though as a single mum at 39 my son will be 18 then I plan to find a little cottage somewhere. I'm living proof there's no ideal time for life and kids they just happen. Keep living your dream and following your gut and what's right for you. As long as it feels right and it's fun. I'm very much an introvert and love my own company but also need contact with the outside world. It is a balance and i have to remind myself it is.Learning a new skill or doing something for the local community is an ideal way to keep connections. Anyway enough of my rambling you seem a really sweet down to earth guy and I hope you keep up with the channel. I'd love to hear more about the books you've been reading and what you have learnt on your courses.

We lived off grid in a camper for a summer with our 3 children, 4 months in total, it was absolutely amazing! The kids loved it, such a great experience for our whole family. We are back in a regular home now, with a small bit of property, but are working on plans for moving off grid full time in the next few years. It can totally be done with kids, and the simple lifestyle is so good for children to grow up with!

Your place sounds heavenly and children would be fine there, they are adaptable and need love and understanding more than anything else. I live in the southernmost part of Canada, and a winter where anything still hangs on in the garden sounds great. I spent ten days seeing Ireland just two years ago and so wish I could go back.

no issue living with a family like this. Children are really adaptable and maybe this is healthier than living in a big city and so focused on technology. Of course issue here would be find someone who is not materialistic to have kids with.

@BeGood 2Me I guess I'm rare, then? I grew up in a large city, and couldn't WAIT to get my own acreage in the country, which I now have. I drive a 12 year old car that I love--because it is so reliable. I don't want another, as long as this one stays good. My home and land are paid for as well-and I have no debts. I LOATHE shopping,
haven't been inside a mall in many years. I divorced a very materialistic man a few years ago, who wanted to hit the malls every week-end, and spend, spend, spend. He and I are still friends...and he still blows money like it's water. I bought my home and acreage after we divorced, he still lives in his home in the city. I asked for nothing in the divorce--even though he has a 6 figure income. He paid for the divorce, it was only $800 as it was straight-forward with no dividing of assets. I just signed the papers when they came. I agree that many women are materialistic--but men are as well. My brother-in-law almost had his home paid for, but then he foolishly took out a second and then a third mortgage--so he could purchase a new Bass boat every couple of years, and a new truck every 2 years, to pull that Bass boat. He won't keep a vehicle past a couple
of years. They are up to their eyeballs in debt, and now will be paying for their house until they die. I've always been frugal with money...and yet my ex-husband (or his brother) didn't learn a thing from me. I work
part-time, live simply, and if I have extra money I spend it on a tree or plants, as I'm a gardener who loves the
beauty of nature much more than new purses or jewelry. Have no interest in those things. I would much rather be admiring my pepper and tomato plants, and my beautiful trees and shrubs on my lovely little
homestead. I know there are more women like me out there--you just don't hear about us. We live quietly,
and are not part of a fast-paced materialistic world.

@@margietucker1719 I am the same. Grew up in a big city but always dreamed of living on my land surrounded by nature and animals. I feel it is more difficult to live on the land on your own if you are a woman. Interesting, I can't find a man wanting to live that kind of life. Not that I am looking for one :-)

@@45purnima Perhaps just an acre or 2? I'm not looking either...like my life just as it is. I have a couple of single men who are neighbors that have asked me out, and I let them know I'm not seeking a relationship.
So were are friendly neighbors. There are some single women near me, who live as I do. They manage fine on their small homesteads. It's good to have a community of like-minded people.
