Lemkovyna: A History of the Lemko Region published October 17, 2012 by: webmaster.
Published in 1969, Father Ioann Polianskii’s Istoriia Lemkovyny is the largest and most comprehensive history of Lemkos and their native region ever written po-nashomu- in the Lemko language. But it has never been available in English- until now!
Thanks to years of effort by members, the Lemko Association has published Lemkovyna: A History of the Lemko Region of the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe, a complete English translation of Father Polianskii’s book.
Lemkovyna: A History of the Lemko Region of the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe is both a celebration of the Lemko Region, which the author calls a “foretaste of paradise,” and a lament over its suffering, especially the ethnic cleansing of its inhabitants after WW II.
Polianskii traces the social, political, and religious history of Lemkos and neighboring Carpatho-Rusyns, chronicling early Slavic tribes and the introduction of Christianity, how villagers earned their living and worked against long odds to improve their circumstances, including emigration to America, and how the Lemko world in the Carpathians was shattered by forced resettlements after the Second World War, including the infamous Operation “Vistula”.
His passion for his native region brings his subjects to life, from indentured servants in medieval manors to outlaws raiding noblemen’s carriages. His eye for detail and access to source material are evident in the detailed histories of Lemko towns such as Sanok, Gorlice, Krynica, Nowy Sącz, and many more.
The 574-page English edition contains a great deal of new material, including detailed explanatory notes and updates; Polianskii’s own autobiography, published for the first time; and appendices by Lemko Association members Paul Best, Walter Maksimovich, and Bogdan Horbal, as well as scholars Mykhailo Almashii and Stanislaw Stepien.
This book is recommended not just for anyone with Lemko roots, but also for anyone looking for a unique perspective on a nearly forgotten corner of Central Europe.

Have you listened to Lemkos in Poland speak? If you think that they speak pure Lemko then listen objectively. They include a lot of Polish words and pronunciation (and I know what Lemko sounded like from the 1940s, the closest to Lemko original as it developed, not from the 19th century. ) You seem fixated on the Ukrainian Lemkos. Discuss the kalichenya done by Polish Lemkos who lived their formative years among the Poles!!! As for the Lemkos (Rusyns) in Slovakia, they speak with a different Lemko dialect altogether!!!!

I wonder how much you know about things first hand that you are able to be so critical of these people and call them "brainwashed." You are out of order and show an arrogance to these people who have closer memories and understanding of their roots than those in distant lands! Interesting to read the review of the book you recommend above which mentions an event you have denied happened in most of your comments in other pieces, ie "and how the Lemko world ...... was shattered by forced resettlements after the Second World War, including......" So there was a FORCED settlement, not voluntary as you constantly state!

@@petertrochanowski3550 You said in a previous response that Ukrainian historians ignore Thalerhof. That is not true. Read for example Serhii Plokhy's history "The Gates of Europe" which discusses the event and talks of denunciation on both sides. However the imprisonment of Lemkos at Thalerhof is because of their Russophile leaders and their support for Galicia to be a part of Russia. Russophile leaders such as DUDYKEVYCH, BANDASIUK, IAVORSKY had returned from Russia with the victorious Russian armies which began to occupy Austro- Hungarian territories in Galicia. Denunciation of Ukrainophiles by Russophiles led to them being arrested and deported to Russia. The Russophile leaders (priests, teachers, lawyers) should have tried to save their followers by intervening with the authorities to let their ordinary peasant supporters and their families go. Instead Ukrainophiles are blamed for their suffering by people of your persuasion.. The Russians had taken charge of Lviv and Ternopil and other areas and the Austrian authorities took action against anyone suspect.
It's a complex piece of history which the Ukrainians have discussed in their media, a couple of which I watched on You-tube as well. Also there began interment of Galicians in the US and Canada as the authorities thought they were supporters of Austria owing to their place of origin!! I note that the Moscow orientated Orthodox church in the North America had had a similar interpretation of this event to yours. Once again it is anti-Ukrainian propaganda.
