when you find out the morning of that “gimme gimme” performance, Sutton’s voice was completely gone and her and her vocal coach got her warmed enough to perform!!
I LOVE that you said her belt is so "healthy" in gimme gimme that day because sutton herself has said that she was so vocally tired that day that during sound check she couldn't even speak but her voice teacher warmed her up on the phone and she has no idea how she made it through! She said she hadn't yet developed the technique and stamina for 8 shows a week.
7:25 Sutton didn’t think she was going to be able to sing the song that day because her voice was so tired She said she couldn’t even get through the sound check because she wasn’t used to doing 8 shows a week And on a tired voice she was freaking incredible
Below is Sutton Foster speaking about the "Thoroughly Modern Millie" performance you reacted to, which aired on the Rosie O'Donnell Show in 2002. SF is 27 years old:
"...You know what’s crazy? We did that [performance] during previews, and honestly my voice was so fried that I couldn’t even get through the sound check of the song. I didn't have the technique or stamina yet for eight-shows-a-week - I was so green and so new. I remember my voice teacher Joan Lader warmed me up on the phone before because I couldn't hit any of the big notes during sound check. I thought, ‘This is going to be a disaster. I’m going to be flat on national television.’ And everyone was there: Steven Unger, my first agent in New York, Rob Ashford, Michael Mayer. But Joan warmed me up over the phone - and she’s the best there is - and she was able to get me there. I look back on it and there was so much fear. That was a big old fingers-crossed, please-dear-God, clenched-ass-to-get-me-through-it moment. It’s amazing people talk about it all the time and I’m like, ‘You have no idea!’..." I've been a fan of Sutton's for a long time. She was part of my inspiration for going into theatre. The fact that some don't even know she sings because they are like oh she is from that TV show. I'm like you have to hear her sing! But I got to meet her at Drowsy Chaperone. She is such a lovely person and so flipping talented. Also whoever made that compilation should get a slap on the wrist for cutting of the last astonishing. Love your insight as always ❤️
I saw an Australian production of Millie when I was 6 years old and I really enjoyed the show and found the obc album online and I've been in love with Sutton's voice ever since 💞
I’m no expert, but I remember my choir teacher saying that it’s healthy to have the habit of breathing from your diaphragm most of the time, even if you are not singing. That will help keep your vocals healthy. Overall though, obvious things like speaking very loudly, yelling or talking for hours straight can tire out your vocal apparatus and impact your singing voice. However, if you speak at a normal frequency, pitch and volume, it shouldn’t impact your singing.
Could you do anything from Tangled the Series? Jeremy Jordan and Eden Espinosa have a duet called Nothing Left To Lose, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
could you do susan egan, amber gray singing charming, andrew rannells in falsettos, patina miller in pippin, or maybe candy store from heathers off bway cast? They've got some INCREDIBLE harmonies
I FELT that righteous indignation at the last “Astonishing” being left out! 😫 Sutton could sing the dictionary and I would sit in rapt adoration at her feet....
100% she’s one of the handful of broadway actors that is just straight up awesome with whatever she does. And she’s one that you want to just hang out with.
Would love to see you dissect some Patti Lupone!! Evita, Meadowlark, the original Norma... There's a video of a concert with Seth Rudesky and she does the original "With One Look", no key change so it ends on an F5 I believe. Patti's voice is so freaking interesting! Natural mixer and so warm and rich, you barely notice when she pops a head tone. Just uncanny in how even her voice is
yooo patti lupone is definitely one of the best, i mean 3 tony wins speaks enough. but her power, especially in her prime, outstanding, jus maybe enunciate more(i mean from a vocal coaches perspective, but tbh, i think it adds more depth, like it’s a signature to her, one of my fav things abt her, can definitely tell when it’s her because of it)
This is me, asking you once more to react to Dylan Saunders and Kim Whalen singing Take Me Back from Black Friday and especially Alicia Tyra Corrales-Connor singing All You Wanna Do! Please please please!
please do anything jonathan groff sings ♡ ♡ love your videos so much! I also want to thank you for being so vulnerable on social media about your mental health struggles. it is important and valuable to help remove the stigma and encourage others to feel comfort for having similar struggles. thanks for being such an inspiration!
Can you react to Sophia Anne Caruso singing Mama Would? It's a really good cut song from Beetlejuice and I want to hear your thoughts on it. Btw, love ur vids.
It will be pushed back a 2nd time...announced Broadway cancelled now through late May. So the current April start of fun will be pushed back. Guess we'll get new dates for tickets soon.
Hello! I am a theatre nerd, since when I was 9yrs old. So, when I was a kid I worked on stage without a mic. To be honest, none of the leads had mics. We belted. Clearly that is different now. I'm wondering how you see this no - between belting, and using a mic. It is a different kind of singing (bottom beltting vs high voice) Let me know!
I got to see one of Sutton’s tour performances around 2008 - it was amazing to hear her live! Side story: Someone who was a part of a show I had just done ended up being picked for choosing her “random” song. [ahem…] He picked wrong. 😂 He chose a very commonly performed showtune, but… damn, I no longer recall what the option was that I wanted to hear... “The Story Goes On” from Baby is coming to mind. It was definitely something lesser known like that. There are times when Sutton’s voice is a bit too much for my ears, but there is NO denying her skills. To have a tone like that and pull off everything she can? 🫨 She was definitely a vocal idol for me, but my tone isn’t the same so I had to recognize my limitations. “Gimme Gimme” is probably my Sutton-limit. My favorite was “Monkey on a Pedestal.” I believe I did a portion of that one for a soundcheck. (I got a kick out of doing songs that sounded odd out of context. “Out for Blood” from Carrie got the best reactions.)
Oh!!! You should react to Pippa Soo singing "Laurie's Song"... brings me to tears everytime. So beautiful, and I have such wonderful memories singing that song.
I think it would be a fantastic idea to do a reaction video to Sara Ramirez's work! Most people think of her from Grey's/Madam Secretary but forget that she's done Broadway as well!
Conscious that a lot of the choices she makes with larynx position and vibrato are related to character choice - you know as well as anyone that it could be the choice of the Music Director, etc, to sing it a certain way!
Wow! I love your reaction, new subscriber, It's good enough to watch this video "NEVER ENOUGH(The Greatest Showman)" by a Filipino girl group 4TH IMPACT please react to this, Thanks a lot.
Please react to Alison Luff. He vocals are god-tier, she played Elphaba in Wicked and Jenna in Waitress, and a bunch of other musicals. Her "she used to be mine" (not the studio version, the bootleg version) makes me cry every time.
I would also like to give a recommendation. Namely the band Null Positiv and the song "Wo Rauch ist, ist auch Feuer" The singer Elli Berlin has an incredibly good voice.
And to think Sutton left Les Miserables on Broadway to be in the ensemble of Thoroughly Modern Millie pre-Broadway, was upgraded to Millie understudy when Kristin Chenoweth left for TV...THEN 9 days before Broadway previews, she replaced the actress who had replaced Kristin, and starred as Millie and won the Tony...
I may be reaching, but I'd love to see you react to Jeremy Jordan singing "Leave, Luanne." The fact that you reacted to him singing "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" is giving me hope!
Can you react to more of the musical episodes of ‘Riverdale’ or the musical numbers from various episodes of ‘Chilling adventures of Sabrina’ (they don’t have a distinct musical episode but they have musical numbers scattered throughout)
Two suggestions. If you want to review a Singer with a lot textures Try “Am i the one” by Beth Hart. In Europe there’s a musical that’s not big in the US, but it’s a huge success on the west end, and I hoped you would review some singers from it. “Everybody’s Talking about Jamie” and the songs are: And you don’t even know it. when you find out the morning of that “gimme gimme” performance, Sutton’s voice was completely gone and her and her vocal coach got her warmed enough to perform!!
Yeah, she literally couldn't make it through the sound check. Crazy.
that’s because her voice teacher is Joan Lader who studied under the late and great Jo Estill. Estill Voice Training saved my life

Yeah, I looked it up
i’ve been waiting for this moment, in the theatre cult we praise our musical theatre mom sutton foster 🤍✨🧚♀️
Sutton was in Annie and Les Mis before having any sort of vocal training. She was incredible then, but even more so now!
Lol when they cut off the last Astonishing note I had the same reaction 😂

The moment she started singing On My Own I was a MESS of tears. The emotion!
And the fact that she never had any formal singing training until she landed Millie!! What?!!
I was unaware of Sutton Foster playing Eponine! Great video 😁

I can't wait for a second video (hopefully some stuff from anything goes)
Do you have any tips to have a healthy speaking voice? Does it influence your singing in any way?
I’m no expert, but I remember my choir teacher saying that it’s healthy to have the habit of breathing from your diaphragm most of the time, even if you are not singing. That will help keep your vocals healthy.
Overall though, obvious things like speaking very loudly, yelling or talking for hours straight can tire out your vocal apparatus and impact your singing voice. However, if you speak at a normal frequency, pitch and volume, it shouldn’t impact your singing.
I would add that whispering is more taxing on the voice than you might think
Could you please react to Natalie Weiss and Renée Rapp singing "When you Believe"??? Please?😊 Please.....?
Sutton Foster is such a queen 👑
I think Sutton was asked to play Eponine on Broadway but she took the job as the understudy in Millie instead!
I think you're right...she did the your of Les Miz but chose Millie...
Sutton was an incredible Eponine I have never seen her really talk about her experience with the roll.
OOOH! We have to love Sutton Foster
Could you do anything from Tangled the Series? Jeremy Jordan and Eden Espinosa have a duet called Nothing Left To Lose, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
