We live in Kingman and take 66 through the mountains and down through Oatman at least once a week or so on our way to AVI in Nevada.
Its a very scenic drive and fun in our Jeep Liberty. Sure would hate to try and take our motorhome on that road, that would be no fun at all.
Your story reminded me of when I broke a ball joint on my Jeep back in the mountains above Bullhead City and was stranded overnight. Lucky for me I had cell phone reception, was able to get a part out the next morning by a friend and we fixed it on the trail.

Some ghost towns actually have tumble weeds that rolls out in front of you and into your vehicles , LOL !! And there's some little towns that if you blink , you will literally miss the town !! My husband and I love old roads !! Have you ever heard of "Buger Town , Mo . (Yes you see the name of it right , LOL)?? It does have a post office , so it is considered a town , it has 2; people (a elderly man and woman ) and their dog !! As always , great video and information John and Mercedes , thank you for sharing !! May God bless you and your family always !! 🙏🕊️💌

I was driving my old Dodge PU farm truck delivering hay to a customer when a brake line blew out, thus having no brakes, but still having a load on. My helper was driving a Suburban. I hooked up a tow strap between the PU and the Suburb, so the PU was towing the Sub. Even when the brakes are out, the brake lights will come on when you touch the pedal. So with the Suburb behind me, I drove on (maybe 25 mph) and when I needed to slow down or stop, he could see my brake lights and then he pushed his brake pedal harder than usual, slowing or stopping the both of us. Because of the hay load, he could not see ahead of me, but could see my hand signal as to how quick we needed to stop. Delivery completed, truck returned to my shop and brakes fixed there.
You were lucky to have a great friend who knew how to fix things!
Wishing you both only the best of travels!
Signed, Paul ... A farmer who has pulled RV (and many other) trailers for more than 50 years.

I once drove a 1986 Subaru GLC SW from Longmont, Colorado to Ft. Myers, Florida with only downshifting and the hand-break. I was driving on the highway most of the way though, so it wasn't bad. Only had to stop for gas. Gets pretty sketchy in town though! Glad you could make it with no accidents!

Back in the 70's, I started driving semi trucks. Sections of I-40 weren't finished, & you had to drive on route 66 for several miles. It was like this in several sections of AZ. I can't remember the year they got I-40 completed, but sometimes because of an accident, everyone had to get back on rt.66 for a ways. Good memories! Stay safe out there,I've been retired since 2017. I enjoy watching your videos, I'm living in a rv camper set up on private property out in the country. I'm really liking it, except for the really cold weather, sometimes!

A few tips for off highway driving that may have saved the caliper from falling off. Air down your tires to about 13- 15 psi. That will reduce the bouncing, making the ride much smoother. Use red lock title on the caliper bolts, with blue on just about everything else. Your emergency brake operates the rear calipers, so with one off, they won’t work.

Did a partial #66 tour 1st week of June last year. The panic hadn't set in there and it was nice not having to wear a mask in northern Arizona. Oatman was definitely the best part of that trip. I've traveled a lot and broken down several times over the years, usually at a bad time in an inconvenient place. Those experiences gave me a kind of Zen attitude and that patience and common sense will always get you there... eventually.

When I was a kid we were traveling in the middle of nowhere in the Rocky Mountains. We broke down. About an hour later a ranger came through. He made sure we had enough food and water, then told us he traveled through every three days. If we were still there his next time through, he would send someone back to get us. I am sure if we did not have a camper, did not have food, or dad did not have a toolbox and mechanical ability, or if dad asked for help, he would have sent someone the next morning. Dad was able to get us running in a few hours. We camped the night in the middle of the road and left in the morning.

I love watching your channel. I have a bit of a story that I will ultimately post at some point. My wife and I sold our 30' travel trailer and purchased a new 2021 5th wheel. We live in Henderson Nevada and are picking the 5th Wheel up in Lowell Arkansas. It was a 3 day drive to get here. We arrived on Monday all set to pick up the new rig and stay for 2 days to run it through its paces before we hit the road home. Within the first minute of the walk through we found out it was the wrong unit. I ordered auto-leveling this unit only had stabilizers, everything stopped. About an hour later the GM and sales guy returned and said the unit is in GA and would take 2 or 3 days to get here. So Im not giving the name of the dealer until everything is done. I will keep you guys informed on this "BREAKDOWN" as it occurs. Hopefully our paths will cross someday. Stay tuned. living out of a hotel room.

After turning down a dirt road I ended up finding the Ford Proving Grounds in the middle of nowhere at midnight. No fuel. I turned around, got back on I40 and the tread began peeling off one tire. I rolled into a truck stop in Kingman and the mechanics save the day.

Even shipped it overseas with us. We were on Rt.66 alot once we left Chicago (seeing relatives.). He even drove SW from Travis AFB (San Francisco) once, to pick up the Route again on our way back east. My Mother liked the hotels there better, and with four kids, there wasn't going to be any camping. That was ok, though. Going back to Sanibel, we lived mostly outside, anyway. Glad you were able to get it fixed at your friends. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a caliper falling off like that. What a weird thing to break.

LOL That is a ~hysterical~ story! I'm glad Sage was able to "meet" the donkeys. I plan on taking my grandson with me on my return to Oatman. I will ~not~ be taking my 31' rig down the East side again though. (They're very serious about that "No Vehicles Over 30ft" sign! lol) I second on the 4Runner. That place is SO interesting and fun!

I had to drive a car from Moorhead Minn to Minneapolis Minn after 10 PM in January with no brakes except the parking brake. Fortunately traffic was light in 1963 in January but the temperature was 20 below and places to stop were nom existent.

Is Route 66 worth the trip? We are thinking about leaving from Kansas and heading that way. Fuel pump going out, nephews with us, Colorado Springs Colorado...Hills some would call mountains....no power, then power...stop lights...the power of prayer got us through. We had to rent a vehicle to continue our vacation while the fuel pump was replaced My husband could have fixed this small issue at home but not enough tools with us. In the rental SUV, we had a deer jump over our vehicle,! Yes we stopped and found the hair of the deer on our roof rails.....You might say there was a little adrenalin pumping. We are glad you made it safely. Is

I would have pinched the brake line with some vice grips so you could still have breaks from the other 3 wheels.make up a small tool bag for that rig . Glad you had some good friends to help you out .take care.

Hello Odd Squad. I really enjoy learning from your experiences and watching your travels. Vehicle brakes are pretty important to have, especially going down hill. I look forward to your videos after a long day at work. Lately though, I find myself spending more and more time on the rumble platform and moving away from the censorship of youtube these days. Have you considered moving to the rumble platform? Would love to see you transition to the new platform. I would hate missing one of your videos.

Did you ever take this to a dealership? Seems like caliper bolts falling out i a thing you should check before any off-road trip. Takes a minute to check them and if this happened once it could happen again. There is also a light both adhesive for threads that you can use on your bolts. Its easy to overcome with a wrench but will not allow bolts to back out from vibration. We use it on aircraft bolts where we dont safety wire them. Maybe Jeep has a reccomendation for what to use.

A good trick if it happens again is to take a small pair of vice grips and pinch the rubber hose off. You will have full 3 wheel braking and much safer then it was for u there. Love the vlog and all your adventures. Cheers.

what? Clark Gable? Like Gone with the Wind, Rhett Butler? It Happened One Night, Frank Capra movie with Claudette Colbert?
I make Oatman a stop every time I go along I40 through Kingman. My kids, now adults, now go through Oatman on their own. A friend's ashes are under a rock just outside town, he liked the place so much. I fully understand driving with the parking brake/downshifting, and giggled when I saw the video. I've been there, but use tie wire rather than bungee cords.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! I can’t believe it. We did Route 66 this past late October, and had RV trouble in Oatman! We were just starting our trip and the tire pressure monitor came on with quite a low reading. As you well know, there’s no gas stations in Oatman, and NO CELL SERVICE. 🙄. We had been coming in from eastbound I40, so we were going the opposite direction than you. It was 100 degrees that day, so luckily the heat from the highway kept the tire inflated. This happened AFTER walking around that cute little old western town, and we were on pins and needles driving those almost-switchbacks to make it to Kingman. NOT the way to start a trip! Loved Oatman and those adorable burros. Momma and Walter came right up to me looking for a handout. It was quite the “day” when we reached Kingman...we ate at the Cracker Barrel, and I KNEW I smelled bleach. 🤭. Some newbie used straight bleach on the table and chairs right before we sat down. The seat of my chocolate brown shorts became BEIGE. 😡. Par for the course, as we always say, it’s “Lemm Luck.” At least I slept well that night... Thank God Sage was in the front car, she would have been scared to death, and thank God again you weren’t driving the motorhome and this happened, like US. Geeze...such great luck we all have! Anyway, so glad you’re all OK and back on the road. Love you guys, Virginia

    • @RVOddCouple
      @RVOddCouple  4 роки тому +2

Hey Virginia! Love you too! The heat makes a big difference. We were lucky to have jacket weather. Glad you were able to see the baby burro. I love Cracker Barrel but Yikes! I wonder if you could just soak the pants in bleach and even it out. Lol. That’s the stuff that makes trips memorable.

I had had a neck operation for four vertebra. Then I had my brakes worked on. When I went to the store in the morning I had now brakes. I called my brother-in -law and drove on the viaduct at rush hour in the morning with no brakes. He found they hadn't closed the brakes up and I had not had any brake fluid left. That was a trip I would not want to do again.
