I wonder if part of the reason why the students seem to just fall over during training is because of the etiquette of the uke in martial arts. In judo, the uke (the person being thrown) is supposed to allow the tori (the thrower) to perform the technique with minimal resistance. On its face, this makes sense, because in order to teach the technique, the tori needs to show it at its best, in order to show the students the "best case scenario". Also, in order to learn the movements, the student tori needs to successfully perform the technique on the student uke. This has the added benefit of making the tori look impressive when showing off the technique to spectators, and it is very ingrained in Japanese martial arts culture.
However, I wonder if this etiquette might have extended too far in cases like qi martial arts. The student believes that he needs to "let" the sensei perform the technique, even if it doesn't work. This starts to build up the placebo effect in the student's mind, where he thinks the technique is actually working. I also think it might build up a similar effect in the sensei's mind, to the point where he goes and does stuff like this. Neither the sensei nor the pupil know that the technique doesn't work.
I am not trying to say that tori-uke etiquette is bad, just that it might go too far sometimes.

    • @nicolasjean1399
      @nicolasjean1399 8 місяців тому +3

Very good point, I think. Something else that strikes me in those "training" videos is, for his students to react to his "powers" the way they do, they actually need athletic ability. When you see them roll or fall spectacularly, you realize they must have had some kind of effective training at one point. For them to play along with this charade is even more baffling - unless you consider the tori-uke etiquette you just mentioned.

I love the extra context. This is the first time that I saw a fake get beat up and got me on the rabbit hole of watching fakes and frauds. The instructors bear the brunt of the issue. These students enable it for sure but they might be looking for community or something and might have been vulnerable when this instructor used some cult type behavior like love bombing or something. I'm fully convinced the instructors know what they are doing on some level.

after the 1st hit&breakout you can even see him approaching master in a way where it looks like he wants to check that master is ok, then referee comes closer to do the same thing. The fighter raises his hand as gesture of "am not gonna hurt u" but is careful how to approach or if he should approach at all.

Sanae Kikuta is, to date, the only Japanese ADCC champion and one of the only guys with a catch-wrestling background to win ADCC gold. Actually trained in high school with none other than Tiger Mask himself, Satoru Sayama. If someone reached out to ask him about this sumo match, I bet he'd respond.

Don't quote me on that, I think Mark Kerr submitted him with an arm-lock. This was definitely at a point in his career where he hadn't fully developed his grappling game to the extent he did later on. He was still a beast, no doubt, but not yet the monster he came to be.

I'd say it's moreso the teachers that are worse than the students. It's like you said, these kinds of instructors basically run cults, ones where they have all the power and are surrounded by other people. If a student goes in there, and they're surrounded by all these people that also seem to believe in this BS, then eventually they're going to start believing that it has to be true. After all, they probably paid money to be there, they probably want to feel strong or have a way of protecting themselves, and they're willing to accept that someone in this position of authority HAS to know some sort of secret if they're this popular. It's a psychological factor.

  • @antonypearce

It's so bizzare, as someone who does Aikido and crosstrains Judo, to see people who do/claim to do Daito-ryu.
For those unaware, Daito-ryu jujutsu was one of the styles that Aikido's founder trained in before making his own Budo, later called Aikido. It was always said that Daito-ryu was as legitimate and tough as other jujutsu of the era, and there's some evidence of that in other parallel styles to mainline Aikido, namely Tomiki and Yoshinkan.
But i haven't been able to find a single video of someone claiming to do Daito-Ryu jujutsu/aikijujutsu that isn't just the worst bullshido nonsense, like this, that makes even the most flowery of Aikido folks cringe.
Is it just charlatans stealing the name of an obscure but real style? Legit confused.

Did you notice that they are all black belts, so don't question the 'master', or you will be busted down to corporal. So they play along for their own advancement. Like it was mentioned in a previous video the seniors become instructors and they all teach their students to keep their tongues in the right position so that they can be beaten.

Like always great content and thank you for all your works good Brotha . But to answer your question, which is to me reminiscent of, what came first the chicken or the egg. Because the instructor at once was a student, but at some point, his instructor started the fantasy fighting mumbo-jumbo. And he was part of a student class that enabled that instructor to continue teaching non sense. However, I believe the instructor holds complete accountability because at some point ego gets involved and the overwhelming feeling of self grandeur takes over. And causes that instructor to feel that he’s separate from the “regular“ person or practitioner, because of his possible consistent training in the arts. Now he feels that he is developed “superpowers“ because of years, or perhaps decades of unchecked behavior and enabling praise by practitioners and audience alike. While on the other hand, the student comes to the instructor empty, full of hopes and aspirations due to whatever life circumstances lead them to that particular instructor and now they come to him as willing and eager participants to have an inadequacy of knowledge fulfilled by one, who they feel is capable of providing and instilling that information of the sought out knowledge . All students come to the teacher, knowing nothing with expectations of leaving with something. So in my humble opinion is completely the instructors fault and needs to be held accountable for teaching mumbo-jumbo Dojo horse boococky.

It's gotta be the instructors, they're the ones that start off feeding their students this bullshit. If it doesn't start with the instructor then it doesn't exist.

There is a form of "Key Gong" that's very effective. You place a key in your fist so that the point sticks out between the fingers, then you hold the gong in front of you as a shield. Using this form of "Key Gong", you can inflict serious injury on an attacker while protecting yourself from punches and kicks. An even more lethal system exists and is practiced by many militaries around the world. It's known as "Gun Fu", the art of projecting small pieces of lead at very high velocities. It is a touchless system capable of defeating an opponent at considerable distances. Master Yanagi demonstrated a less effective martial art called "Play Do" which translates as "the way of pretend". 😁

I really wish I could fight one of those chi masters one day, not to beat them to a pulp no, but to play their game, prentend the chi blasts are working on me for a while to see their reaction before I win(cuz well...1m yen is not a bad value, I'd take that)
And even after the win continue to play the game and tell them the chi blasts really hurted and I felt like it was a close match or something.
Just to see what type of effect it would have on a person like that, cuz "it worked on someone outside their dojo."
Because I'm fascinated by psychology studies as I am by martial arts.

AotD: I think the teachers are to blame more than the students. Yes, in some contexts they could be enabling the cult teacher, but a teacher is supposed to guide and help students, not encourage them toward self-destructive behavior. Some people are susceptible to suggestion, and maybe I’m wrong but I think 100% of the time, it’s the teachers who say, “I’ve got chi powers” and not the students who go, “Hey coach, do you have chi powers?”
