    Whats heartwarming is, that the opponent who died after the fight against sugar ray robinson, only wanted to fight, to buy his mum a house. After Sugar Ray was told about that his opponent died, he spent the money he won in his 4 next fights to the opponents mum, so she could buy herself the house her dead son promised her 💔

      And what's even more incredible is that, initially he backed out of the fight because he had a dream where he killed Doyle in the ring. It ended up coming true. He had to be persuaded to fight Doyle after the dream, that persuasion came from a priest and a minister of all people.

    What i enjoyed about 90s boxing was that nearly every weekend was some televised card of real good fights. The undecards were good as well.

    They were not getting paid near as much and so they had to fight more just to survive. They also didn’t know as much about traumatic brain injury so they just fought to kill, never for their own safety. The men of the old world were certainly a different breed.

      He fought 40 professional fights against cab mans before facing old mosley. Many fighters from mexico tend to fight unknown boxers or move up people 3-4 weigh classes in order to have an outstanding record.
      My cousin boxed in 112lb-115lb some years ago, he and some of his gym partners received a couple of offers from a mexican manager who wanted to make a record for some 140lb prospects.

    Pro boxers of the past century were literally monsters. Nowadays we have really strong champs, but I can't even imagine me comparing Foreman's strenght, Muhammad Ali's speed, technique and footwork, Mike Tyson's peek-a-boo style against any of the actual champions right now...

      Because the heavyweight the division has been a complete joke and borderline dead ever since Klitschko came in with his awful style. The lighter weight divisions are now by far the most entertaining styles but it’s not fair to compare strength of welterweights to heavy weight. But their people that easily have Muhammad speed like manny, Ryan, Garcia and the technical and footwork said like Mayweather and Lomachenko.

    I can’t believe people are glorifying the kill when Sugar himself didn’t like it and it changed him. He was sad about the death of Doyle,
    Doyle pushed himself to fight that match to buy his mom a house but died during that match.
    So sugar gave the earnings and helped his mom buy that house.
    People in the comments trying to act cool with the kill mentioned are just horrible people.

Most Boxers in this generation took styles that old boxers legends used, but most boxers in this generation prioritized defense over anything, while the old school boxers were all about pushing what human limitations is capable of. Look at Earnie shavers, hardest puncher in the heavyweight division, Muhammad Ali, and iconic figure that was the fastest boxer in his generation and he was a heavyweight. It’s really hard to measure who has better skill since we haven’t gotten an full on fight between them, but considering that most old school boxers outscales newer boxers in every possible physical trait, I do not think any boxer from this generation would stand a chance against someone like Earnie Shavers, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, and Sugar Ray Robinson.
