I'm right handed but rheumatoid arthritis is making my life harder so I had to teach myself to use my left hand more with my day-to-day tasks. I started stitching with both hands after I purchased my Lowery Workstand.

I’m so right handed that my left hand is very weak in comparison…not a medical thing, either. Is it “Frederick” or Kathy Barrick’s “Cooper?” I’ve had Cooper in my stash for a few years and will be getting to it within the next year or so. He’s a giant parrot or something, right?

Though I write with my left hand, I use my right hand for many other things that I do.
When I stitch, I usually hold the needle in my left hand. Using a needlework stand, I often use both hands. Recently I have worked at improving the appearance of my embroidery stitching by following suggestions in The Left Handed Embroiderers Companion by Yvette Stanton.

I like Silver Fox and Raw Natural for the Fragments in Time charts. I am naturally right handed but trained myself to be somewhat ambidextrous years ago when I broke my right thumb. Since then I've been a 2-handed stitcher (which increased my stitching speed quite a bit!). I hope you feel better soon.

Another great video. Did you know left handers have a shorter life expectancy? From can openers to power tools, things are just not right for us. The big three: writing, eating, stitching, I am left handed. Throwing and using scissors, I am right handed. Weird, huh?

I'm right handed, stitch right handed, but am fairly ambitextrous. My maternal grandfather and uncle were both left handed and I've always wanted to be left handed - no reason why!!! I once learned to crochet left handed so that I could teach a friend to crochet who was left handed!!! I can stitch left handed, but not as quickly - although I am slow anyway! Get better. So glad my grandkids are grown, I remember well all the "time with the grandkids" colds!!!

I’m a lefty! I do everything left handed, except for using scissors. I had a teacher in school who made it her mission to get me to cut with my right hand, and she succeeded. Holding scissors in my left hand is a dangerous prospect, as is holding a needle in my right. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi Julie, happy Spring! I am profoundly left handed. I do everything left handed-eat, cut, throw, knit and stitch. I hold the hoop with my right, and work the needle with my left. When I knit, I take the stitches from the right needle and put it on the left. I have to reverse every direction in my head. My daughter is also left handed , but I think she is more like you. She plays viola, and therefore is trained to use both hands equally, so she tends more toward ambidextrous.

Love that you take the time to show us various fabric suggestions for the designs you show, so thank you -- I appreciate it.
I'm a left-hander and guess I was born that way. My mother and one of our sons -- also lefties. I stitch with my left hand, needle of course in my left hand. Have tried 2-handed stitching but find that difficult. I make XS's like a right handed person which I think slows me down stitching. (1st stitch goes lower left to upper right instead of lower right to upper left).
Interesting question & I'll look forward to other's answers to your question.
I always find it interesting that so many items are made for right-handed people but more & more things are taking left-handers into consideration like scissors, vegetable peelers, measuring cups, soup ladles, i was xs "how to do" stitches, etc.
Hope you feel better soon and sorry to hear about your uncle.

I'm right handed and stitch with my right although I always start in the top left corner. Like a book I suppose. DTM doesn't need any stitching to share for a good installment, his stories are entertaining and your interplay is great.

I am Very left handed. As are most of the females in my family. My mom, my sister, myself, my daughter. My son and nephew are righties. My mom taught us to turn our paper the opposite direction so we don't write with our hands all twisted up like some left handers. I stitch 2 handed, but the needle stays in my left hand or is sitting in the wrong hole. Lol. Wish I were ambidextrous!!

Well Julie, if you’re weird than so am I! I do the following left handed: write, throw a ball with left but bat right handed, and cut my meat! Everything else I do right handed including needle in right hand. I can write right handed but is very slow. I went to a business college back in the late 60’s and I remember asking the instructor of the business machine class where the left handed calculators were and she said..sorry but there isn’t such a thing ..so, of course, I was forced to learn the calculator and other machines right handed. I am left handed and I think statistically 10% of the population are left handed. I hold my needle in my left. The only thing I do right handed is cut with scissors because the school system never had left handed scissors. Speaking of school, in the fourth grade one nun was determined that I would become right handed. She repeatedly made me write right handed on the chalkboard in front of the entire class and it was humiliating. It also didn't work.

  • @ruralncstitcher7105

Love that Earth linen! It's gorgeous! I'm a righty, so stitch right handed. My husband is a lefty. I see him use his right hand way more than I ever use my left. I asked him about this. He explained that he writes left handed and uses the left for anything requiring fine motor control. Whenever he needs strength, he uses his right hand. For example, if he were to hammer a nail, he'd use his right hand. I've always thought left handed people were better at using their right hand than we right handed people are at using our left hand. Hope you feel better soon! Nicole

Wanted to add that I experience vertigo issues too. I found that the Epley maneuver really helps. There are some very helpful videos demonstrating how to do this. After doing the maneuver, it takes a few days for the fuzziness to go away but at least the spinning feeling lessens or is almost gone.

Right handed person here, mostly, sort of. I do many things left handed that feel totally awkward doing right handed. Like opening combination locks or dealing cards among others. I broke my right arm when I was a kid so I also learned to write left handed at the time.
As for stitching, I will use the needle with my right hand unless I’m using a stand. For that I can do either hand over or under the fabric, if that makes sense?
    Hope you feel better soon!!!!

I am a right handed dominat person and do just about everything with my right hand. I find it interesting how many patterns don't have good photography. I find this especially true of samplers and then you see them in person and are amazed at how beautiful they are stitched. I suppose that is why so many needle shops have models hung everywhere for people to see.

Sorry to hear you are under the weather and about your uncle. Hope you are able to be with your family. I’m right handed and used to stitch right handed or with both hands in a frame or Q-snap, but due to an overuse problem with my right wrist, I mainly stitch left handed in hand now. Works for cross stitch…haven’t tried embroidery this way, but I will soon. ☺️ A good friend really likes the Verdal. I haven’t tried it yet, but would like to!

I am right handed so I hold my needle in my right hand and start stitching with the left hand underneath the fabric while stitching on frame or hoop. I do have a question when I came across a floss tuber that mentioned taking off the linen from the hoop or frame when you stop stitching. Is this required for the linen to rest since a project is stretched in a frame or hoop? There is so much viral infection going around so I hope you feel better and have a good stitch retreat.

thank you for showing the called for fabric vs what the picture looks like.
