I love my Osprey Synchro 20 - I ride with my son a lot so I carry the extra food, tools and spares. Also good for carrying extra/shed clothes should the need arise. It’s also light enough for the solo rides - bonus, the Airspeed ventilation keeps it cooler than my smaller hydration packs.
I bought a £13 one from Aldi and genuinely it’s not much worse than my £70 Camelbak! My advice is don’t automatically assume the branded ones are worth the money.
Same here, I bought one for £20 from Aldi at the beginning of 2015 and it's still going strong. The features and functionality are on par with stuff over £100. I just wish Aldi would start selling it again as their newer ones aren't as featured packed.
Deuter is a quality product. Used a Futura 28 to commute to/from work for many years, still use it today for outings. My Son bought the same model to carry his many College Books and he still uses it today for to/from work.
I use a day pack even for shorter rides, it's such a convenience to have a water bladder with easy access, instead of a bottle on the bike. And also all tools, spare tube, some energy bars, etc and maybe a spare sweater or jacket if it's cold out. Love my Scott trail rocket evo 24 liter. It has more pockets than you can shake a stick at with two main compartments which means I also can use it back country skiing with the avalanche kit in a dedicated compartment (was a key feature I looked for). And while it can fit a lot of stuff, it can also be contracted with an internal cord of its minimally loaded so that it does not wiggle about. Highly recommended.
@@BGraves in Arizona, you still need a bigger water bladder for short rides in the summer. You also need to make sure you replace your electrolytes so you don't end up in the hospital.
@@BGraves i dunno about widkin but i live in the southern US. I've seen entire July's above 100F. I use a day pack for almost every ride, as well, and for the exact same reasons; Plus, if it's that hot, i can suck down 1.5L in a short 15M ride myself. but maybe that's just me... Once you get to a certain point, whether the bag is there or not, you're still soaked in sweat. May as well have my tools and a snack.
@@BGraves here in Sweden, it's not as hot as some other places of course, be we do have had heat waves of over 30C in the shade the last summers so water is needed. And I also always, always, run a back protector, which means the backpack is less of a heat issue - it's just some added weigh and I prefer to have that weight strapped securely over the shoulders instead of with a single strap like a hip pack. I mean, a hip pack either bounces about or is too tight over the mid section, which I usually like unrestricted to use for breathing 😅 Edit: As an alternative to a bladder in a backpack, I can also recommend using the hydration vests with soft water bottles made for running. I have a Salomon Agility with 2x0.5l bottles and that works great also for shorter biking, in case you just want water and no tools (or have tools on the bike). I'm sure the larger vests with more water could also work great, there are options with bottles + bladders for multi liter carry capacity and you can normally stash some small items in there too.
EVOC 20L with back protection. I carry it almost everywhere. Big enough for a full first aid kit, all the tools I need, tubes for me and even other sizes for others, plus food and clothing protection. Love everything about it
Love our Osprey backpacks. Plenty of pockets to carry everything you need for a 3-4 hour ride. Separate tool pouch at the base, lined pockets for valuables etc. 3 litre bladder is well designed and very easy to clean. I was even able to get a purple backpack for my missus. It’s her favourite colour so that was well received. I can’t see us ever using anything else should they need replacing.
I have an Osprey Viper 9l for my regular rides with a 2.5l bladder. I also have an Osprey Escapist 25l with a 3l bladder that I have used for commuting and is great for long adventure rides, it has so many features it's a great pack.
Love my mule. Carry everything I'd ever need. My local is a 25 mile loop so if I do run out of fluids or supplies I can restock at the trailhead before I make another lap. Usually have plenty in reserve if I'm hurt or have a mechanical and have a long hike back to the car. Thankfully it's never happened yet but it's nice to have that peace of mind.
Everyone still remembers the eastpak and the wolfskin era. In Germany we had/have an additional deuter thing going on. They are just known to be a really good brand for hiking/biking stuff. (As far as I remember, they had been established around the end of 1800). Cool to see them on your channel as an alternative to camelbag, evoc etc.!
➡️ OSPREY Talon 11L. Lightweight, Zipped pockets everywhere, Good straps, Good colours range, Good fit. Bought mines for around £60, not cheap but will last.
I just got a Dueter air lite 28...it has the mesh that keeps the bag a few inches from your body creating an air pocket between your back and the bag, its awesome.
I just got the biggest bladder from decathlon (3l) and put it in my school backpack (but without the notebooks, lol). On the hottest days I've gotten to drink ~2l so it's perfect for me
Just ditched the pack and gave pocketed roadie bibs “cargo bibs” a go with a hydration bladder+snacks in the pockets and a bottle on my frame 👍🏻 Will still take my Evoc ride 12 if I’m going on a bigger all day adventure ride tho
It would of been really nice to have offerings from other brands as well ( evoc, camelbak, USWE, osprey,... ) and also more variety for bum bags/ hip packs !
I already have 7 bladders (4x2L and 4x3L) and 4 different packs (1 is designed to carry multiple bladders). If I wanted to, I can ride my bike nonstop for a week.
After switching to USWE Patriot 15, I cant imagine Myself carrying any other backpack. In My opinion USWE´s No Dancing Monkey carrying system makes a tighter fit, than any other backpack for mountainbiking can offer.
These bags (not the brand here necessarily) are lighter and well designed. I would go a little over size because the bag itself is very light the bladder can be filled according to your ride, you don’t need a full 3L for a shorter ride. A slightly bigger bag is more versatile.
That hip bag is good but the bladder is annoying to put in when it’s full. Also, if you got a big belly like me be ready to improvise some way to attach the hose cause it won’t reach the attachment. I use the magnets from my osprey backpack
I've always liked back hydration packs for off road even for rides I don't need that much water, it doubles as a spine protector for if I fall on my back.
I have Osprey 5 liters .. great breathing layer they have design! But i feel my balance on the bike is effected because of the weight of the water on my back. Especially on technical ride that require you to switch your balance right n left. I think something like Camelbak waist water pack 3 liters will be better on that respect. I wish Osprey will have something like that, or maybe design their water bladder to be placed on the lower part of their backpack so it will be closer to the ground or the user’s waist.
Hey Guys, I really appreciate a lot of your videos and the effort to educate the mtb community. But why do you have to obey so hard to one specific brand in some videos? Why not compare different brands and point out the good and the bad? This format as it ist doesn't really help... It's just a giant infomercial... Don't sell yourself out too much please... Keep the good quality content high please!
Because the brand, in this case Deuter, paid them to do this, it's call marketing, and then come the obligation to the sponsors and rules of the channel. But your idea is a good one

Agree, 2 x day pack, one with back protection ( also for snow board), and bought a hip last week end and loved its small convenient size, as well my back is no longer sweating , yeah whatever mesh or ventilation you get warm, don’t forget that.

Now I see that they've changed the bladders to make them openable and dryable. But can someone confirm that their mouthpiece doesn't drip of the valve is left open?
if you dont need a tent you probably dont need a backpack, i can get enough stuff in my hippack (EVOC hippack pro) for a full day ride, 3L of water (with an additional 750ml on the frame), 4 protean bars, 2 sandwiches, phone, inner tubes and all that emergency stuff are strapped to the frame, also have a cable, quick link plyers and quicklinks, and a multy tool in the bag. but no spare clothing though, i live in the desert and it gets up to 35 degrees on rides (when it gets hotter i don't do any full day rides, no matter how much water i may have, its just unbearable and you get sunburned trough your clothes even with sunscreen added to it, but now its 45-50 degrees, only time to go riding is before 7 when it gets too warm), but i do take 1L of water out for 2 (ultra thin) spare layers if i am riding in Europe. and all of this is especially true for if you have any kind of stop or shop near your path, like many people probably have. if you are going to have to be so self reliant and going for so long you need a tent, you probably need a full back pack
