I just love this tune!!!! Did you know, in my country, Romania, we also call our traditional music "Doina"? I havent seen yet another country in this world to use this term, not even in the slavic sorrounding nations which kinda had some influences on my daco-roman language. Perhaps there's a more deep connection between our indo-european nations which goes backk thousands years. Respect!
It's simple, than we moved from India We lived together Dacians Thracians, Lithuanian language has many similar words with Thracians, than ice age gone in Baltics we moved here, we are one nation.
Bro I visited Romania last year. Few hundred km from Cluj. Mountains are just mind-blowing. We stayed in a small village and what I did really like is the traditions and culture that your people managed to keep alive. This is what we all lack these days. Love Romania!
Lituania, de nossos antepassados. Glória a um povo herói. Poucos entendem. O mundo distante não conhece a Lituania. As flores, os riachos, os pássaros, o vento gélido,... o amor à patria querida, agora tão distante. (Brasil) =====> Lietuva, mūsų protėviai. Šlovė didvyriu žmonių. Nedaug suprasti. Tolimos pasaulis nežino Lietuvą. Gėlės, upelis, paukščiai, šaltis vėjo ... myliu Tėvyne, dabar taip toli. (sunus Lietuva).
We lithuanian brothers and neighbours latvians call our songs "Daina". We have even woman name Daina and men name Dainis. "Latvju Dainas" collection of folk songs together with lithuanian songs are in Unesco worlds heritage list. They are very old, some from thousands of years old indoeuropean past, when there weren't slavs, balts romanians etc separated.
Žinot, kuo man žavios lietuvių liaudies dainos? Kad jos sau dainuojamos, o ne žiūrovams ar klausytojams... Tokios į širdį einančios, ašaras išspaudžiančios, apie savo gyvenimą verčiančios mąstyti...
No, you're right, -dava is the termination used by dacians for their cities. It is known that dacian tribes covered a large areea. Archaelogists digged dacian activities even at Bratislava. I believe that the dacians (northern branch of the thracians) were kinda simmilar to the people which inhabited Scythia and nowaday Poland and Baltics. For example a dacian king who conquered the Bastarnae was called Oroles (the Eagle), well I saw lithuanians say "Erelis" and Polish "Orzeł" to Eagle.
this song is about a young married woman, whose husband's father sent her barefoot in the freezing winter cold to bring the fire of fields, the snow of summer, the freshly cut grass. so she is singing how she was running through the snow and ice through a bridge and met an old wise man. he refered at her as a daughter and asked her where she was running barefoot in the freezing winter cold. she told him. then he advised her to go to the end of the field and gather white stone - it will be the fire of field, to go to the sea and take the sea foam - it will be the snow of summer, to go to woods and pick some evergreen - it will be the freshly cut grass. anyway i can see there is a translation into english in the description of the video, if you press "more" :)
It is difficult to explain this word. Nowadays it means nothing, just a refrain. But the root "lel-, liul-" can be associated with swinging, playing, flowing... (for example "lėlė" - doll, "lalėti" - to flow loudly, "lūliuoti" - to swing making sleepy, also sanskrit "lalati" - to play).
"Leliumoj" is a Lithuanian refrain that refers to the songs of the winter solstice time.

"Daina", "Doina" is one of the pure indo-european words. If I'm not mistaken in hindi "Daina" means "Song"... I think many lithuanians moved to south during slavic migration because for example in Wien painted chronicle appears "Tara Litua" (Litua Land) after the name of the Voivod who rulled that small portion of land. His name was Litovoi... Just for your info. :)
Doina- duona or douna it means BREAD or breath (brot germany)...Song is a Life...Lietuva- Lithuanian ( lietus- va its mean a raining, lietuvis - lietus vis - raining again)

Leliumoj means a magic time durnig winter, before Christmas or something like that. You could translate it like "in the advent"
Wow, thank you! That is indeed magical! :)
