1985-1987 THROWBACK REPORT: "YUPPIES"

- Yuppie Stands for Young Urban Professional. Yuppies are usually the children of doctors and lawyers, hold Master's degrees from Ivy League universities, and are very concerned with their appearance. Many were in fraternities and many live in expensive houses or apartments.
Yuppies can typically be seen in large metropolitan areas such as Portland or New York. Their wardrobe consists of grey, black or khakhi slacks, usually with grey, striped or pastel colored suit jackets and shirts. Yuppies typically take the idea of competing for social status extremely seriously. Their culture revolves around Starbucks coffee, expensive foreign restaurants and romantic comedies starring Julia Roberts or Tom Hanks. Yuppies generally only hold political views that are considered trendy.
Many yuppies go into fields such as politics, big business, public administration, medicine and law. You may have worked for one.
I wonder if any of them got a reservation at Dorsia. 😂😂😂😂😂
bigpolitical829 😂
I bet they didn't hear new album of Huey Lewis & The News yet
Nobody goes there anymore
Ahahah 👌🤣
Mr. Ed Is that Evana Trump?
I'm on the verge of tears by the time we arrive at Espace, since I'm positive we won't have a decent table. But we do, and relief washes over me in an awesome wave.
Impressive. Very nice. Let’s see Paul Allen’s “American Psycho” reference.
People were out here aging like milk in the 80s! None of them looked close to their alleged ages.
Smoking, booze, coke, sun, no moisturizer.
Quick Money short lives.
@@tropicalpalmtree not to mention not enough sleep (14 hour work days?).
actually, this is what 20/ 25/ and 30 yr olds ARE SUPPOSED to look like, there is a reason why most millenials growing up with Gen X/ Baby Boomer Parents thought getting to 30 meant you were REALLY OLD, and teenage/early 20 yr old girls were scared shitless about hitting the wall at 25, which traditionally has ALWAYS been the beauty wall for women until the past 20 yrs hit, and suddenly women are saying the wall is 30 or even 40, and they look generally younger
Lots of alcohol, cigs and the white stuff
2:37 look at that subtle off-white colouring...
oh my god, it even has watermark
Sabrina don’t just stare at it, eat it
@Rowland Oh, that's well-behaved Patrick!
Yes, Daddy Bateman
This video made me die of cocaine overdose.
No wonder when I pulled up in my new BMW at my grandparents house my gpaw called me a yuppie lol
Those things have a high depreciation and they break down often that’s why BMW means big money waster
I have finished watching this video completely.

I am a Taiwanese who cares about the global affairs.
(我是一個關心全球事務的台灣人)
And, sadly, most of my fellow Taiwanese don't really care about the world.
(但是,很不幸地,我大部分的台灣同胞不那麼在意世界。)
Hopefully Taiwan can become increasingly globally-aware and globally-competitive.
(希望台灣可以越來越有全球意識與全球競爭力。)
God bless Taiwan.
(天佑台灣。)
真的嗎?
Taiwan? You mean the Republic Of China!
Wishes for the best!
All the best to Taiwan!
British Yuppies are very similar but there is some subtle differences.n I grew up in the era and trained to be a banker just before I was ready to move to London, Black Wednesday stock market crash happened, loads of staffs got laid off and home repossessed.
It was a shock as many thought the good times would never end.
The Yuppies are still there but much more muted and less brash.
@Alqu001 ! I suggest you look it up on the internet, with specific term British Yuppies, you'll find its mostly about London centric young urban professionals of the 80s with Sloane Rangers s a counter culture to YUPPIES, the 80s in the UK is quite an interesting era.
Since you weren't around that time how would you know we're copying Americans ? We never did, we were distinct from American Yuppies, any similarities is only on the surface, if you lived during that era you would know.
I did and we were different, the only thing we shared was a common language and work ethics.
Colin Vespa I suspect the English yuppies were ex-punks or former mods.
In the City Of London, yuppie culture is still alive.
@@yannick245 Its not the same as the 80s/90s tho mate.
"it even has a watermark"
The oldest 29 year old I’ve ever seen
There’s no way in hell the guy at 7:15 is 29 years old 😂😂😂
Lana's Daydream 🤣🤣🤣🤣
men age horribly compared to women
It's his hairline.
During the '80 they didn' t remain very young very long and they dressed like older people
Damn look at his hairdo!!😳
These yuppies weren't kept in check and now the major cities are unaffordable and boring.
Lol there are plenty of rust belt cities with 1000 dollar houses homie get it together
don't you just adore honest reporting? Oh man.
That was a thing of the past, a handful of companies own 99% of the media of the world,

Let's see Paul Allen's report on yuppies...
And now in 2020 PhDs are saturated and my ass is making $45k in pharmaceutical industry and would make $35k in academia HAHA.
Andy are you serious??? I thought you guys would make 6 figures no matter what.
You probably chose a shit degree
A bad day for these yuppies in the 80s is probably 20k
Most English yuppies were ex-punks or former mods, especially the revivalist mods.
That's seems a bit of a stretch, especially taking into account England's caste system. Most punks and I've never stepped foot in Britan so I could be wrong but it just seems unlikely.
One year later the stock crash of '87
RIP World Trade Center WTC @08:15
Plus Bill Heenan I wonder where he is at now?
This is a time capsule.
The yuppies aka the 1960's hippies who realized after 1969 that success and prosperity were not so bad after all. The woke generation I see becoming the yuppies of tomorrow.
Yep you got that right
Not likely. Most of us were raised by yuppies, were nouveau yuppies in the 00s before The Great Recession, and haven’t had access to the wealth accumulated by the tech boom. We’ve seen and survived a lot of shit, that’s why we’re “woke”.
Fuck ur woke asses i rather be a yuppie than a fucking crying woke ass bitch
@@Frankdrebin22 who’s crying, tough guy?

BMW meant Beauty Money Wealth
Money & wealth ?
@@keenynthewise
Money is a way of measuring wealth but is not wealth in itself.
BMW- Big Massive Wankers
hippie, yuppie, grumpy old man
If I had alot of money I'd be smiling too.
I'm sure not all them were idiots.
Wow they seemed so happy
When you have alot of money of course you're happy you can buy anything
The only baddie was communism. Aids and ozone layer weren't even big deals till like 87/88.
The graphic at 7:37.
Well, the WTC were iconic buildings.
A landmark of Manhattan.
Japan Yuppies were on a whole different level tho. 😂😂
Please share a link, if you saw a video on that.
I can't speak for all of these individuals of the time, but i will say some of their mentality was so screwball. Yuppie culture was so self centered and all about money and wealth, never about staying true to your self or others. Obviously it probably still exists in some form or another but what a wild time the 80's were. I enjoy listening to these old news stories.
The Yuppie who kept such a low profile and yet had so much prominence in the movement=Barry Diller.
When I was young I had yuppies, but I forgot to clean out their tank and they all died.
Ha! ...and then Oct. 19, 1987 showed up. Thanks Hez, another great video.
The end of social conscience. Money, greed, me, me, me.
This was the beginning of what we are now (Reagan/Thatcher).
P O'Neill Trickle down economics is pretty much ruining the world.
@Sherlock Holmes i guess your sick hobby is beating a random homeless person you see.
@Sherlock Holmes fuck yourself
This is the dumbest theory I have ever heard
His name is Paul Allen
Did anybody think that The Yuppies were Kool in 1980's
Dude they think they are cool right now. They simply have tattoos and piercings now and code.
I find Yuppies a fascinating piece of history
ok boomer.
Hey did you have back ups of all your old special reports?
Unpopular opinions incoming: The yuppies and the yuppie era was awesome, greed is beautiful and good, and I would have loved to be Patrick Bateman 40 years ago.
Same here friend. But how about this. How about we bring back that style? I am trying to currently. Even if it doesn’t become popular. We will be the yuppies. We will be the cool and logical ones of modern messed up society.
@@pepsi_man4962 That style never left. A well-to-do individual dressed for success, as if he already owns the company that owns the building he happens to be in at any given moment in time, will always be in fashion.
@@BJ52091 I’m talking about the 80s coolness of it all bro
@@pepsi_man4962 Even better! 80s coolness never stopped being cool in my opinion
@@BJ52091 it never did! Im sick of modern day bs. Society is a mess these days
I want... to fit... in
Now I know after all these years (I would've been still in my crib back then) what a Yuppie is.I can be like them but not be out of touch.
now if a stock brokers gets fired. well he will just open a robin hood account or a TD account and boom hes back on top lmao well kinda.
7:37 lol
Remember kids, don’t be a yuppie, otherwise you WILL be tomorrows Boomer
100k salary in the 80’s was like 300k that’s why boomers were able to buy a house lmaooo
7:38 didn't age well
lifestyle idea changed
Where are they now?
Rich.
Dead
Covid killed them
Broke
Dead probably
This day still wondering how Paul got the Fisher account...
I wonder where they are now i was 8 then smh
hard to believe these are the 70 and 75 year olds of today :D
Nooo stop, they’re like in their 50’s
Being in your 20s in the 80s would make them in their 60s.
7:15 this guy is only 29?! I look younger than him today and I’m 39. Wow. And he refers to people in their twenties as kids haha.
Tbf he probably got to retire on a full salary pension at 60, if he didn't die of a heart attack
Yuppie= content creators of today Gen Z
In the 60s and 70s it was the hippies
In the 80s and 90s it was the yuppies
In the 00s and 10s it was the hipsters
I think now it’s the wokes
And that's why we slipping into fascism because anyone who spews out "woke" is another way of saying "I am racist, sexist, homophobic and embrace the most bigotry I can and won't stop until the government is on our side where we can force everyone who are different than us to either follow our ways or if they don't, DIE"
And there's no way you can defend your stance since anything called "woke" are by very paranoid white cis Christian men with a few tokens (I'm looking at you Candance Owens) here and there that will serve the majority until their use are no longer relevant and thrown under the bus once power has been achieved. So fuck you!
Sharonnn doooont you meeeean... WOKIES??
Not one of them with any ounce of rhythm
& aside from the fact that they couldn't dance, they were obnoxious.
Financial brilliance doesn’t need to dance.
Wish to know where they are now.
They're older primadonnas making life hell for the lower working class thats where they are.
A lot of them are probably working as Wal-Mart greeters since they spent everything and saved nothing!
BNO97 ! They are generation x. Gen X has no beef with no one
The famous one is in White House now.
@@MeltinJohn You sound bitter
Sell outs ! ( hurray for me and screw you, greed is good ) ~ Boomers for Reaganomics
Lmao I grew up in SF and watched this movement emerge then kick out and now they are trying into Karen's and Boomers
Yuppies aren't inherently bad people.
They're just like any type of radical.
Yes alot of them did bad things with alot of money but so do people that win the lottery.
No difference really.
Just gambling.
Make a video on ‘Buppies’ please 😀
What a time to sell coke
Kind of both hilarious and awful that it later transpired that absolutely none of these people had a clue what they were doing 📉
Less than Zero ... Im going back to... No I don't think us ...
good christian boys
@Marco Zepeda what's wrong with coke? only lasts 30 min and back to normal ready to drive. it's a great party drug.
Lee Betty Hernandez Deborah Jackson Patricia
They're not confined to a generation though. Yuppism is people who define themselves by what they own
He was right , the crash of 1987 followed , which turned out to be one of worst crashes
30k a year lol. so rich
In the 80s 30k went a long way
It’s the equivalent of 83k…. Again, not rich at all.
7:38 😅
they were hated for being rich and successful. now look at all the getto people covered in tattoos. nobody hates them

Yuppies are boomers or generation X ? For me generation X but if somebody could enlighten me !

these tools were in their late 20s & 30s in the 1980s, they are definitely boomers. I was 10 when this video was made and I’m Gen-X
Worst generation of the times, right here.

Meltin John I really wish it was like this now
If it wasnt for the crazy period, i dont think we would have modern rock (or atleast inspirations that came from blues that became rock n roll (mix of blues and country). And that madness probably transpired to modern day rock. So some good did come out of the absolute mad house of expressive people
