I'm currently running a homebrew campaign for my friend and his two sons. His six year old makes a great barbarian, angrily killing everything in his path, revelling in destruction and blundering into traps when running blindly towards treasure and danger. 😂
Great vid deffo something here for new HQ fans I’ll be buying first light for definitely despite having already having the core set… well done 👍👍🗡️🗡️🗡️
I wonder if Avalon Hill has plans for miniature upgrade packs for the First Light base game. They could have an upgrade pack for each of the enemy types and a furniture pack with boss minis in each (Ulag, A Dread Lord, the Witch Lord, etc.). To entice vets, they could have one shot quests with each that uses one or both sides of the board.
I honestly can't see it happening. For a start Ulag and the Witch Lord aren't in First Light. But really, I think that mini packs for First Light would be a hard sell on the grounds that it would probably be very difficult to incentivise players who have the miniatures to buy them again (even if there are a few new miniatures or a quest) and I suspect most people buying First Light either don't care for miniatures or will get the miniatures by buying the main core set on sale, or by purchasing the expansions (once you have Kellar's Keep, Witch Lord, Prophecy of Telor, and Spirit Queen you have all the miniatures you need, and once you have Mage of the Mirror and Rise of the Dread Moon you have plastic versions of all the furniture too). However, I have said before that it would be cool to get some monster packs containing variant enemy types (orcs and goblins with spears, and that sort of thing) and some "generic" boss miniatures. Again, I think it's unlikely.
I can confirm that the game plays just fine with younger audiences. Took my daughter (8) and 3 family friends (18-44) and ran them all through a few quests on New Year's Day. All of them had a blast, and my daughter was killing it as a barbarian.
Barbarian is a great choice for the younger players. They just love booting down doors and scaring all the poor little goblins. Glad to hear you are all having fun... not that I am surprised!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring in the rescue of Sir Ragnar she may have gotten overconfident and opened two rooms back to back despite her teams advice. After getting pounced by 6 enemies and rescued by her team we had a meaningful discussion on working together. Great times. :)

Jungles of Delthrak has so much cool stuff in it. It's quite different to anything else you can get at the moment. I'm glad the videos helped to point you towards HeroQuest.

Great video. First light is great option for new players to get introduced to the system. If proved popular then only more heroquest will be forthcoming. Since the remake was released, I have been hoping for a new board, so seeing this, gives me hope for a bigger expansion for the main game that uses a whole new board.
Well we already know we have two more expansions (at least) coming this year, so I think we are good for HeroQuest for a while, and indeed if First Light brings in even more players then that can only be good for the continuation of the game. Although - to be fair - we already have so much stuff. It's really impressive how much support the system has had.
I think £25 is still a lot of difference when buying as a speculative gift for a child. All those miniatures are worthless if the game never gets played.
All good points - and yeah, there's lots to consider. There's no denying £25 for the plastic is a good deal. But £25 can be a big difference when you aren't sure about something, or if you are a grandparent looking for a birthday present, or a kid looking to spend some birthday money. It's also a lot for plastic miniatures if you don't want them, or you don't have other uses for them And then we have to consider we are comparing RRP of a brand new product with a discounted price of an older product; I think that £25 gap will get wider eventually. Something I didn't mention in the video, is that if you buy First Light you have the most up to date version of everything, and then if you eventually buy all the expansions you will have plastic versions of all the enemies and furniture anyway (although the furniture will be Elven, and some of the monsters will be blue or orange). You will just be missing out on the doors. Honestly... this video could easily have been an hour long!
Hopefully it will be useful. I figured if someone saw this game on a Target shelf, they might appreciate a video that tries to condense a stupid amount of information into as small as place as possible!
Perfect video for my pre-order today. German version that is. To be released early February. For whatever reason I had the original hero quest as a small child and played with the minis and the terrain all the time but never player the actual game. Now it's time to make a trip down memory lane.
Thank for the video, I really enjoyed watching it. I have now gone out and purchased the larger game system box, and being someone who likes to go over board from the get go, I have purchased the wandering monk expansion. This lead me to the rogue heir of Elethorn expansion, now only being sold by scalpers I assume at over £80 in the uk. 😢 In future, what is the best way to be aware of new and likely limited run content? There’s nothing worse than coming into a game late, only to have missed soo much and punished for being a late comer. Cheers again for the vid and content 👍
Thanks for watching. Hopefully the Rogue Heir will get a reprint. It wasn't a limited product, but it has been out for some time so stock has run dry. I cover all new HeroQuest products here on the channel. Following Avalon Hill on social media is also a good idea.
Not easy to cover everything indeed! But most important is there! I would probably add a word on the "game system" nature. If I remember well, you're not particularly interested in all the home-brewed content, but HQ also shine thanks to the thousands of home made characters, quests, unofficial expansions and expanded systems. I have many games but still my number 1.
The video covers a lot of ground, but there is a bit in there on unofficial content and homebrews in the "What is HeroQuest?" section, and another part on making your own content and using online resources in the "Expansions" section.
When I watched and commented on the other video, I had not seen this or initial review. What a shock to see cardboard denizens and tile furniture 😲 The principal feature of HQ was the board, figures, and furniture. Sacrilege! 😁 … of course, I understand this is a "get your toes wet" option without parting with big Dollars, or Stirling in your case. No wonder it is called "First Light", it is "HQ Lite" 😂
Did you miss the big First Light unboxing and review I did before just before Christmas? I think the standees are a great idea for this release, because it isn't replacing the original core set, it's running alongside it as an alternative option, and it still doesn't cut down the gameplay in any way. It's just a cheaper option that will appeal to people who don't care about miniatures and painting. I also like it as a more portable set to take places.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yes, I missed all the previous videos. But I got the general idea as to what is going on. And understand where they are going with this. What Hasbro/AV could do is release a First Light Lite edition so existing owners can get the flip-side board, and that dragon figure. But they will probably rely on people buying both starter sets. More money that way… 😀
The algorithm really hated my channel in December! I think there is already enough value in First Light to justify the purchase - new board, new quest, new heroes, new dragon boss, all new revised cards (unfortunately with some issues, but including the changed starting equipment for the dwarf), revised rules book with new rules, new dice in unique colours, new DM screen with more useful information on the back. And it's portable. So, I think the value is already there, even at RRP, which is in line with the cost of an expansion. Once First Light starts getting the standard online discount, or it goes through some sales, it will be even better.
I got The -21 version last december and painted all figs. My 6 year old son loves to play with the rest of the family. We also just "play" with him just the two of us and Make The adventure up as we go. Its always fun either way. Used to have the old version of the game in the early 2000, but IT got lost during a move.
Any pack that includes a new hero will have useable content. Additionally, if you start with First Light, then Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord have plastic versions of most of the standees. Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queen's Torment have variant sculpts for all of the monsters from the base game. Mage of the Mirror and Rise of the Dread Moon have Elvish furniture. If you get both you will be able to replace all the 2D furniture from First Light. Mage of the Mirror also has elf spells for the elf hero. Against the Ogre Horde contains base game monsters with different armaments - goblins, orcs and skeletons with bows - that you can swap in for regular versions of those enemies in any other quest.
This new cheaper starter set has come at a great time for my 6 year old nephew. I introduced him to the original HQ at Christmas but his parents were put off by the price of the full fat version. You know what kids are like, mad on something one week, bored of it the next. The cheaper price makes this a no brainer of a purchase.
That's great, and I think that's one of the reasons this new core set is such a good idea. Getting as close as possible to that "impulse" or "birthday money" price tag is key, combined with making it visible on store shelves. I hope your nephew has many years of adventuring ahead!
I wish they would have made the attack/defense dice with a noticeably different color, something that you could just glance and think _"Oh, the First Light dice"._ I also wish they would have added brand new artifacts instead of using the same from the core box.
Agree about the artifact cards. I understand they had to include the originals - if you play the original quest in the app, or buy Prophecy of Telor or Return of the Witch Lord, you do need those artifacts from the core game - but I would have loved to see a set of brand new ones that were custom made for the new quest. Considering in the new quest you do find some artifacts and blessings that you are just supposed to mark on your character sheet the opportunity was right there!
Since you said playing solo with this game isn't the best experience, do you have a more "go to" solo dungeon crawl game in your playing experiences? Great video though! I enjoyed the layout of topics.
Thanks for watching. I play a lot of games, so I don't really have a single "go to" solo dungeon crawl. In fact, I play a lot of games solo that aren't really intended for it, often "partitioning" my brain to play both sides. That's how I am able to enjoy things like tabletop skirmish games even when I don't have an opponent. Some dungeon crawlers and adventure games I play solo often (off the top of my head) include Advanced Heroquest, Space Crusade, DungeonQuest, Space Hulk, the D&D adventure game series, Resident Evil 3, Shadows of Brimstone, City of Chaos, Silver Tower, Blackstone Fortress, Cursed City, Dragon Strike, Stalagbite, the Horrified series, Cuse of the Mummy's Tomb, Space Marine Adventures, Legends of Andor, Runebound, Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Another Glorious Day in the Corps, Rangers of Shadow Deep, and Euthia. Some of those have true solo options, some let you play solo but you have to control several characters, and others require a bit of creativity. You might want to check out a video I made back in 2023 which talks about 10 games that I think are good "true solo" adventure games - ua-cam.com/video/CqCCyVJgTT4/v-deo.html
Do you have kids, and do they love things like Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia? Pick up a copy of HeroQuest. Do you want a quick, low personal investment alternative to full role-playing games? Pick up HeroQuest. Do you enjoy writing adventures? Pick up HeroQuest. Do you love expanding on rules and creating your own campaign setting, or are you itching for new ways to explore your current favorite campaign setting? Pick up HeroQuest. Do you want a game that takes three minutes to learn, but where the strategy and tactics can get every bit as deep and crunchy as you and your friends are willing to make it? Pick up HeroQuest. Do you like crafting dungeon tiles and terrain, painting miniatures, and creating elements for wargaming? Pick up HeroQuest. Or do you want a tidy little kit of simple dungeon adventures where you don't have to do anything but open the box and play? Pick up HeroQuest. If you have a ton of dungeon tiles and miniatures sitting around that you'd love to use, if you love pushing plastic around maps and playing pretend general, if you enjoy exploration based video games, if your D&D group is getting burned out and needs a light alternative, if you want to create your own game but need somewhere to start, if you have a some kids around you need to entertain, if you're a huge fantasy geek or just enjoy sitting around with friends laughing and BS-ing, if you're a teenaged kid looking for something new for your local boardgames night...this game is for you.
First light seems to be a good start into Heroquest, I'm more drawn to the Spacequest theme, but this looks great to play with my 14.y.o and his friends. As a non-painter I don't mind the colored standees.
Thank you for this great overview, I have been enjoying your HQ videos immensely. I am really tempted to dive in, but as a coop and solo player I found the app was too high-maintenance and needed too much constant input (although to be fair, I don't see how this could be avoided as the game was really designed with a GM in mind). The low setup time and streamlined rules are a big draw, though.
Yes. I think the app is about as unobtrusive as it can be - I like the fact it doesn't insist on tracking every small detail and doesn't make you adhere rigidly to the rules - but it still demands a lot of attention which I don't really enjoy. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Ye Olde Inn is a great resource, but in my opinion it's not the first place for new players to go wandering. This video is supposed to help someone new get a feel for what the core experience is all about, not hit them over the head with all the unofficial stuff. As I said in the video, it can all get confusing, and the video is specifically supposed to help cut through that. The homebrew content is the sort of thing you explore at your leisure once you know you like the game and want to run with it, and also once you know enough to understand if there are things you would like to change or new ways you would like to play.
Sounds like you got a really good sale price there. At the moment in the US First Light is a Target exclusive so there won't be any competitive pricing - the price will hold pretty firm. That should change a bit later on.
As someone who already has the main 2021 box, $50 is a bit much for what First Light would give me...unless the quests and the new board in action are great. So I'd be interested to hear a review of those. Even if the quests and board are meh, I'll probably eventually get this just for the alternate hero sculpts, extra set of dice, and updated cards, but otherwise the money would be better spent on an expansion for my main box.
I still say First Light should've had 3D papercraft furniture similar to the furniture from the original game. It would've cost maybe one more piece of cardboard punch board and it would've done wonders to preserve the presentation.
It would have been nice to have some papercraft furniture so things were still 3D, but they would have had to figure out all new designs as the original HeroQuest furniture incorporated so much plastic still. Maybe they could have teamed up with Battle Systems!
I guess why you would want gold to encourage searching. When and how to buy equipment. To be honest this bit is not very clear to me in the rules and don’t seems to have got to a stage of equipment. Maybe just not far enough in as only started playing again recently
I see. Maybe I will take a look at that subject in a future video. But yes - you will always need gold to go shopping between quests, initially to equip heroes with weapons and armour, and then subsequently to stock up on one-use potions.
Theoretically, they can be played in any order by any heroes; they certainly aren't all balanced, though. Frozen Horror needs a Zargon player who can read the room and ease up on the yetis sometimes!
He's a bit of a glass cannon, sure, but that cannon pack punch. He's your best bet for party healing and some bosses are a real pain with out him. The Frozen Horror and the Dread Wraith come to mind.
Some people do play the game solo and really enjoy it. If you are only interested in solo, make sure the app works in your territory, and that you're okay facing a Zargon who isn't going to adapt to and challenge the heroes as a human Zargon can. You may also want to look into some of the unofficial solo modes that are available online.
The age of 14+ is so odd, the original was 10, and I got the game when I was younger than that. I think if a kid can handle Monopoly than Heroquest is playable. Just need an adult for Zargon maybe at younger ages. 14 just seems too old, that childhood imagination is already becoming a fleeting memory. Dungeons, Magic, and the Undead... that is prime time for little kids imagination. Zargon should be 14+, but this game is like age 6 or 7 with adult supervision (just to referee, aka Zargon). A group of only 8 year olds might devolve into chaos, unless they have a few games under their belt, than an adult is probably no longer needed
Yeah, I'm not sure if it's to avoid more rigorous safety tests, or just to make sure there is at least one older player to take on the role of Zargon, but it could easily be younger. While all children are different I think about 10 is right for being able to do it by yourself. At 6, 7, and 8 kids can easily play, but supervision and guidance are probably going to be necessary and attention spans may start to falter after a while. I personally started at 10 and my older brother was Zargon for the first few games. By the time we had played through three missions, I was ready to take on the role myself.
14 is used just for legal issues ... lower the age on the box and in the US you have to follow strict safety rules and regulations, costing a bit, and - even more problematic for publishers - needing a lot of time for tests and paperwork.
I am playing Heroquest with my 10 year old daughter, and she enjoys it.

I am on a quest for the ultimate dungeon crawler board game.
What's on your short list?
@@thedalewardens9106 You can't beat Heroquest for simplicity.
Always had a soft spot for the original Warhammer Quest as well.
You've found it.
A lot of non-hobbyists are going to appreciate those standees, I think.
Did I miss you mentioning the ogre horde expansion in the list of suggested play order with expansions?
Yes. It's around 18:46.
@ oh thank you! I am watching this video early in the morning. Your video + coffee gets my day started right. :)
That's funny, because most of my videos only exist because of coffee!
With all the talk about the custom content available, why not link to Ye Olde Inn at least in the description?
Ye Olde Inn is a great resource, but in my opinion it's not the first place for new players to go wandering. This video is supposed to help someone new get a feel for what the core experience is all about, not hit them over the head with all the unofficial stuff. As I said in the video, it can all get confusing, and the video is specifically supposed to help cut through that. The homebrew content is the sort of thing you explore at your leisure once you know you like the game and want to run with it, and also once you know enough to understand if there are things you would like to change or new ways you would like to play.
Saw this at Target this evening. 50 dollars. I cannot remember what I spent on the newer core set but I think like 80.
Checked my order history and got the repackaged version without the both gender heroes for like 67 dollars.
Check out the links in the video description. I have done a full review of First Light and a spoiler-heavy deep dive into the new quest book.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring You maje cardboard boxes with printing on them. Not a lot to figure out.
I would like you to cover using gold and equipment
In what way? Like a good order to buy equipment or how to load out each hero?
I guess why you would want gold to encourage searching. When and how to buy equipment.
To be honest this bit is not very clear to me in the rules and don’t seems to have got to a stage of equipment.
Maybe just not far enough in as only started playing again recently
I see. Maybe I will take a look at that subject in a future video. But yes - you will always need gold to go shopping between quests, initially to equip heroes with weapons and armour, and then subsequently to stock up on one-use potions.
17:51 Laughs in Frozen Horror.
Theoretically, they can be played in any order by any heroes; they certainly aren't all balanced, though. Frozen Horror needs a Zargon player who can read the room and ease up on the yetis sometimes!
The WORST thing about HQ is... the Wizzard.
Without houserules (like "Tactics") I can't play him anymore.
What's wrong with the wizard?
Nah, the wizard is a top pick. I'm hoping they revise the spells in the forthcoming Wizards of Morcar expansion to make those better options as well.
Wizard is hard, but it's fun, specially once he gets some artifacts tailored to him.
He's a bit of a glass cannon, sure, but that cannon pack punch. He's your best bet for party healing and some bosses are a real pain with out him. The Frozen Horror and the Dread Wraith come to mind.
But I just want to play solo
