- In this video, we are discussing 10 things that you need to know about Australian culture before moving here. So whether you are coming as an international student or on any other visa, these are the things you must know about #Australianculture
Specifically, we are going to look at these 10 things about Australian Culture:
1. Friendly nature of Australians
2. Australians love their sports
3. Australians don’t have a specific religion
4. What to do when meeting with Australians
5. Aussies love their slang
6. No discrimination or racism allowed
7. Tipping waiters is not common
8. Arrive on time when meeting someone
9. Public Transport Etiquette
10. Dating Culture in Australia
Aussie Slang Video:
• How to speak Australia...
Very accurate. However as an Australian I would use caution when smiling at total strangers. If it’s face-to-face it’s okay to smile within reason. But you should use caution if you smile to somebody on public transport or in a bar as example. They may think your sexually interested, or maybe your creepy. There’s a time and a place to smile at a stranger in Australian culture - so please be careful.
Thank you so much for your input. I am pretty sure it will help many visitors and students alike. 🙏
Wtf drugs are you on jason lmao
What would you suggest when we meet someone at work?
exactly right I am international student I have received a lot of support while I am studying there. they are also respect everyone not matter what compare to back home. I really love Australian culture🇳🇿🇳🇿
It's always good to be a few minutes early to a meeting, have a casual chat with colleagues and get yourself settled, the meeting should start when the scheduled time is, so if it's 9am that's when business starts and you shouldn't be walking in the door at 9am.
Appointments like doctors, dentists, job interviews, etc you should always be a little early.
If it's a casual catch up with friends, then you can meet at the appointed time, you don't have to be early though most people aim to be a few minutes early.
100% agreed Stella. We are thinking of making part 2 of this video. We will feature these points in that. If you have any more suggestions, please do share :)
it sounds like heaven, no discrimination, open minded, honest, friendly, I like it
After teaching students in Spain for a full school year, I’ve realised how unique some of our Australian cultural norms are, so I’ve been scanning UA-cam to see what others have to say about us! One thing I’ve noticed in Europe is that spitting on the ground is completely normal, people should keep in mind that most Australians find this quite shocking and unhygienic. In fact it’s illegal to spit in certain places.
It's considered rude in Europe, too. It happens, but usually shows an inferior degree of education.
I'm Australian and the most important thing from this is that Australians are very casual and jokey, we actually feel very uncomfortable if people act too formal, for me it feels like I'm dealing with a robot or that the person isn't sincere if they act overly formal. So be yourself and have a good sense of humour and then you'll get along with Australians, they like to enjoy life and not take things too seriously.
Yo that’s exactly right. 💖😌 :)
Number four is a very real thing. It's not that Australians are uncomfortable with other people it is that we are used to a lower population density that allows for a larger person space bubble. Even with Australia you can see the differences between Capital city folks and the more rural, or even less sparsely populates Outback folks in how close they stand.
you missed the fact we smoke weed out of gatorade bottles
Jack Russell well.... teenagers and bogans
@Jack Russell You find them all over local parks in the Northern Beaches... Is that Boganville?
play goon of fortune
we do that in the us too lol
@@alejandrahernandez2135 yes. but everyone in australia who smokes uses a gatorade bottle, like literally for then 80% of smokers easily
Australians are smiling to you, but it does not mean they are friendly. Sometimes it is a false smile while they do not like you. It is very common in English background countries.
That’s actually true :( :) Sometimes it’s just to be polite
Nawww... as an Australian this seems pretty accurate. I hope that visitors fin this vid to be true and helpful 😄 welcome 🙏
Thanks Jaclyn, appreciate your lovely comment. We indeed hope that too. 🙏
Agreed
not australian but am currently working with them. fell in love- 💕💕
I’m an Australian and I’m generally five to ten minutes early for any type of meeting in case the person I’m meeting with is early so we arrive at the same time
Hi! So you are an Australian? May I ask what are the things that are misinterpreted in your culture? Just Curious hehe
Can u possibly elaborate on the question? I’d be really happy to answer. I’m just not quite sure what u mean
@@deshantismith2023 Yes Aussies are pretty punctual. It is rude to be over 15 minutes late.
That it is. I personally don’t like it when people are late. It gets on my nerves
Thanks, brother. Some really nice things youve said here. Like anywhere there are exceptions to the rules. Im stoked that you seem to enjoy Straya. Much love, bra.
Australia is a very big country with a small population so we are used to a lot of personal space. When you’re in public, keep this in mind and don’t stand so close to people when waiting in line for example.
That's a very good suggestion, Jason. Appreciate your comment.
That is very good, some people don’t like that but we are patient ^^
Anyone else here Australian watching this haha
Dude apart from this is there any other thing about australian culture that is fascinating ?
Yeah lol idk why I'm here

Female Aussie perspective here. WE do not use the term ma'am here. Either call us by our first name or if you don't know it say nothing! Retail workers may be told to use that term but we do not appreciate that word.
Secondly, not once have I come across a YT similar to this which mentions our ability to know who was before us at the Deli or whatnot. If the server says , "Who's next?" Don't try to jump the queue because you will have your head bitten off! We don't line up but do a quick visual of the people around the counter before us, to know when it is our turn.
Otherwise, good video!
Thanks Maureen, really appreciate your feedback and some more inputs. We are definitely going to release few more videos like this in the near future. We would love to hear any other inputs you or your network have on things migrants should know about. :)
What? I say ma'am all the time. What's the planet coming to...
Good start. Racism and discrimination doesn't really have anything to do with Aussie culture since its more of a legal thing. Aussie culture is not just defined by sports or any of the other things you listed. Culture is also about lifestyle such as Aussies like to bbq and go to the beach etc. Aussie culture is a multicultural blend of other cultures so we can't really label Aussie culture specifically since our people are a hybrid of Australian Indian Asian European etc.
The one problem with racism in Australia is actually in the younger communities. Racism towards people for their culture or accents is more common in Australia than racism against colour. I am rxtremely worried about our future when I’ve heard really young kids use racial slurs.
Correct. African Americans have no problem here, but African Africans do. Same colour, but different culture.
@@keynesianeconomics4113 Dutton tried that shit about Sudanese "gangs" in Melbourne before the last election. Melbournians went nuts along with the rest of the state. There WAS no problem. Sorry if your interactions with fellow Aussies hasn't been that good.
All youth, globally, are guilty of using racial/ethic/religious/gender/class slurs. Its a part of gaining group acceptance from your peers, which is so important and essential to teenagers. Most as they mature realise these juvenille traits are just that. Its wrong to assume that a persons behaviour as a youth dictates their behaviour as an adult. Generally I honestly feel that most Aussies are not racist, and believe that our culture rejects racism at all stages. We Australians are very proud of culture and our identity. Deep in our hearts is the principal that we will accept anyone, without hesitatation, as long as you embrace our culture, and its values.

a person coming to australia for the first time from new zealand asked a local . do i need to know any aussie customs ? She was instantly told . dont be late.... .
Thanks Paul for the confirmation. It is indeed very important to keep in mind. :)
I’ve never heard that. Aussies were never particularly on time for a lot of things from what i can remember.
@@ilovesuisse1 Tardiness (not being punctual) is disrespectful, especially in business. Being late is always understood, as long as you ring ahead. Social punctuality depends on the event and occasion.
Forgot 'know' in the title my man.
Update: Good video once again, very accurate tips!
Thanks, my man. Just updated it :)
Thanks a lot @AussieMoneyMan for your as always support.

Hey...... I was just wondering if the australian work culture is bias towards outsiders or not? I'm looking to study in australia as a chemistry major and some of my friends say that it is very biased for outsiders. For example, let's say i have a master's degree for my major and i'm basically qualified to be some sort of chemist, but because i'm an outsider, they kinda prioritize their own citizens and reject me even IF i am far more qualified then the other contenders.
That's how it is in the USA too. It is more valuable that you can speak fluent English than if you are an outsider.
No they will not bias, but they will be concerned about understanding integration into the workplace. I have two Indians and a Zimbabwean in my firm.
You missed about how much we swear 😅
What really?
Izuku Midoriya yes lol The word “Cunt” means person lmao
Friends of ours are French and the swearing in a family setting was eye opening.
The C word is commonly used and I was told, "that is normal."
What, we are never late for a meeting? I never knew that was an Aussie thing. Who is late for a meeting? :D
Also if you're in Melbourne, most work meetings are over a coffee so, if you want to fit in... drink coffee.
Good on ya mate.
🤗🧡
I wanted to get to Aus last year for my masters.. then corona happened and shit went down hill. I'm asked to study online but it's not worth at all for me, from the experiences to expenses.
How many times can I travel from 9$ per day using myki money via train, bus and tram
In one day, if you pay full day (around $9) you can travel as much as you like :)
$9, not 9$
You could travel from point A to point B with only just $4.50 if it’s within a 2 hour window for your travel time but other wise $9.00 daily fare

Don't litter!
Don't push in ahead of others in a que.
Don't spit on the ground.
Don't stand close to people when lining up (supermarkets/post office, etc).
Don't flush ANYTHING down the toilet apart from toilet paper.
Don't squat on the toilet seat to use it.
Try to stick to the correct side when walking or using escalators/stairs, etc.
Try to recycle 💚

No-one should 'expect' anything. If a man is expected to pay a woman for her time...then that's not right.
I'm an Australian female.
I do not mean to offend but As a 9th generation Australian born in the bush (rural) but live in the city a lot of what your promoting as being Australian customs are founded in some suburban (not all) and city lifestyles and people, this is not the case for all Australia. We can eat on public transport, we were known as a Christian country etc.. please check your facts before you pop a video up like this. :)
Most people are quiet atheists and don't believe Bronze Age nonsense.
Australia has never been a Christian country and our constitution explicitly separates church and state.
@@rivertam7827 USA explicitly separates church and state and it is mostly Christian by culture.
Close to half if not more australians identify as athiest or agnostic far more than any other denomination or affiliation.
And most who are religious are not heavily so. Although that also varies state to state, city to city etc.
You are also right about australian customs etc though and that also depends city vs rural vs state. Even accent and slang etc changes state to state etc.. some aussies talk through their nose and some speak more like bbc english..
Eating on public transport is ignorant and rude
I don't agree with number 8 😆
