Love that idea. How do you know the guy with a sheep mask is an elf? Back in the day our party never trusted anyone. Chests have bodies in them. Nice. Fresh Corpses could reek of a metallic blood smell. Maybe a foul toilet smell. That 's the latrine behind us. I always put in a latrine near living quarters. I've always thought a doppelganger has perfect knowledge of a character through ESP and can completely replicate what a character looks like, but I'm thinking they may smell differently than the character they have duplicated. Nothing anyone would normally pick up. Maybe they have just a null odour. So if a character always reeked of tobacco or sweat or alcohol, suddenly they smell like nothing. A pet dog would notice something wrong where a human wouldn't. Likewise a lycanthropic character (well werewolf anyway) would smell something off about a doppelganger. Sorry maybe a step too far . I like the incense idea too. Then the Doppler is actively doing something. The monster laying on the bed is extra suspicious. A praying cleric smelling incense seems better.
