Finally, here's the Fugue part as a follow-up to my previous Toccata version played on Axon AX100 guitar synth. (I've also added a new Toccata version without the Axon, but with the Roland GR-100 instead).
In my first version of Toccata I used only the church organ sound from my Axon, but on the Fugue I've mixed the Axon sound with my good old Roland GR-100, one of Roland's analog "guitar synth" units from the early 80's. It doesn't sound much like a synth, though, it's basically a "hexaphonic fuzz".. Both sounds were recorded simultaneously and mixed in Cubase, to make it sound like a "duet" for organ and guitar, and you can see me playing both tracks on the split screen.
I also added a third track on a few small sections where I found my piano sheet music version lacked something compared to the original organ version. (the piano version uses of course only two staffs/voices, the original organ version has three; left and right hand plus feet).
Of all my You tube videos, this has been my biggest challenge so far. It's not the easiest piece of music to play on a guitar, so it took quite a few hours to learn, reading both treble and bass clefs from the sheet music..
Hope you enjoy it!
Additional pedals used: Electro-Harmonix Micro Pog, Boss DD-6 dig.delay, Boss RV-5 dig. reverb, Palmer PDI-09 The Junction guitar DI box.

When guitar synths first became popular in the 80s, I immediately thought of T&F in D minor, but had never seen anyone pull it off until today. This is way cool, Ketil.
As a devoted organist, I was very pleasantly surprised to see such a wonderful performance on an instrument other than the organ - never thought I'd hear myself say that! Truly magical :-) Lee
He said "Simply superb, I never heard this piece more harmonic, then in this version. Pure organ!!! Super!!!"
Absolutely amazing! As a fellow axon player I have to say you are definitely an inspiration and really respect how difficult it is to play that piece. Most people don't realize how sensitive those midi pickups are. A lot harder than regular guitar. You have to be nearly perfect. The slightest finger movement causes unwanted sounds. This is about as good as you can get. Pure awesomeness!!!
this man writes musical history on guitar. you are amazing.
awesome, the synth subbing in for the pedals was perfect, but gives you an appreciation for organists who do it all at the same time. So Hard
This is the best cover on youtube. Better than any guitar player, and anyone who does it on the organ. Excellent work buddy!
Respectfully & righteously done. I had seen Steve Steven play excepts of this live on a Roland 707 in the early 80's (84 or 85) - it was amazing pumping through a huge concert PA. That is what lead me here, to see if anyone else had done this on a Roland guitar synth since then and posted to video.
no words can do this justice, totally amazing, pure genius
The small swepping near the end is totally amazing, well the fully song is totally amazing, good use of the synth, great work man!
Brilliant piece of music! played with immense skill, creativity, imagination and musicality.
Fantastic, combination of organ/guitar synth works really well. Thank you for this beatiful piece of music.
Wow! Impressive, I didn't think a synth could sound that good coming from a guitar. Good job!
...and to this also: what a beautiful piece, it even sends tears to my eyes!
Thanks, rednebb, thanks!!!!
Thank you very much; that really means a lot to me coming from an organist!
Regards, Ketil
Very well done, most renditions i find of this piece are crap, but I love how you actually used the real music, and didn't change it (to your extent that is, I'm sure for guitar, something had to be tweaked) but beautifully played. Great work!
Fantastic stuff.. Love the way you double tracked it and shot it twice and split it on the video during the editing - clever stuff and great you could show us both parts.. Excellent performance and well done.. Like I said in another post on another of your vids, you're not only good you're amazing.. Well done.. Loved it..
I bow to your limitless talent, Master!
Most epic guitar playing i've ever seen!
The synth sounds are created by the Axon AX100MKII. It first converts the guitar signal to MIDI and then you can use its built-in sounds. But you could also use the sounds from basically any other MIDI sound module. You'll also need a special hexaphonic pickup (Roland GK-3 in my case) mounted on the guitar to be able to "translate" the guitar signal into midi.
oh man it's videos like this that make me want to throw in the towel lol, that falls in somewhere between superb and epic
This is ABSOLOUTELY AMAZING.
Ive been following you since some time now.. (I met u trhough Canon) im a pianist and i can certainly asure that something written for piano/organ is twice hard to do on guitars cuz unatural positions. You have the gift of perfectionism, and it would be great to see you in magazines and getting rich =) i cant buy your CD since i dont have easy access to dollars, but believe me, without hearing it, im a top fan over here! Greets from Venezuela and best of lucks master.
lol, going to have a test about classic music in three days, and now this showed up in my "recommended" box. Sweet.
this guy fucking blows my mind, my mouth is on the floor every time i see one of his videos
¡Chee, açó és mel pals oits!. This is honey for my ears!. Bravo!!.
wow, wow, wow! That is completely awesome! Hats off to you.
great job! i don't know if i could ever play that well if i practiced a hundred years!
thanks for the videos! i'll watch for more!
Thanks, that's very nice of you, I'm honored just to be mentioned in the same sentence as those guys..
wao! en realidad, esta cancion es unas de mis favoritas e importantes, nose que decir, me la estoy aprendiendo, auque me tarde meses he de aprendermela, esta cancion es la unica cancion clasica que casi me hace llorar cuando termina.
this is the most awesome bach I've seen on guitar (well, after that crazy Adam Fulara dude)
Just Jawdropping Awesome!!
Thanks so much for this.
+mhwalmsley Thanks :-)
Somehow, that chord at 4:57 gives me goosebumps
Tusen takk for det, det er veldig kjekt å få kommentar fra en av Norges mest velrenommerte gitarister ;-)
OK, I was mesmerized !!! That was incredible to say the least. WOW !!! :-)
Thank you very much :-)
Dude... Incredible job
Tusen takk Ketil ! Meget overbevisende !
Outstanding performance!!! Beautiful!! Thanks for post
*thumbs up*
You're just amazing!
Keep it going and have a nice time while playing these great songs!
You are a MASTER, Wonderful!!!!
Absolutely phenominal.
Thanks! No,I didn't use tabs, but regular sheet music. However, there are several tab versions of the Toccata and Fugue on the ultimate-guitar website. I haven't really checked these out, but from my experience tab versions of classical pieces can often be quite inaccurate..
outstanding performance! Bravo!
I am in awe... Rock 'n' roll man!
I love the duet-style video! Have you thought about doing it as an ACTUAL duet...?
great and perfect interpretation! hail you!!
Epic.
From the sheet too.
Your students are lucky !!!
this is absolutely cool :) hex fuzz is a really interesting sound. i personally always find too keyboard-like sounds on midi guitars sounding odd due to the tuning etc. being guitar-like but it's a cool effect on the other hand :P can't even imagine the amount of work that went into this... amazing.
You... Are my hero.
Simply fantastic, you are an inspiration!
@MaghoxFr Thanks, you're too kind! And yeah, Fulara is amazing!
Bravo! your sound is so clean...
Ooops, sorry. That's funny, I'm always telling people "read the FAQ" on my videos; this is the first time I've asked a question that was answered in the FAQ on somebody else's.
@rednebb Unfortunately no. I've never been able to find any vid or audio recording of it. This was during his guitar solo with Billy Idol during the Rebel Yell Tour. I think he was using synth bass pedals as well for some of the bass notes. I do recall that he played played the famous intro and most of the piece up to at least 4 or 5 minutes but I only recall and recognize some parts from memory. He is classically trained and accomplished. Nowadays, he typically does his solo acoustically.
I am completely blown away by this
The song is so amazing, and you performed it wonderfully.
It really carried the emotion, I mean.. I even sensed that and I don't even really like classical music. (apart from Canon by Pachelbell, because of Canon Rock obviously.. It's imprinted in my mind)
anyway, you did a really great job!
cheers
Very very nice.
I'm not amazed, like some guitars noobs here talkin' bout' Malmsteen or other sily stuff.
My friend, you are guitarist. Like killertomatoes said, i m glad we can find real piece of work, sometimes, on youtube.
Thank you.
Dear sir,
Your magic be the more potent than the mightiest of unicorns.
@insaneguitarfreak Thanks! Yeah, I've seen Philip Hiis version too, and I love it!
Yeah, maybe..? I considered that option too, but ended up with this combination of the Axon guitar synth and the Roland GR-100, which I think fits the music quite well. I was actually even thinking about doing it on acoustic guitar..
I'm going to upload it to my website soon, I'll let you know when it's there..
Found it, nice, thanks for sharing, another steal for music creation.
=] amazing, i hav a friend who plays the organ and hav saw him play this live, ill definetly recomend this video =] well done mate
It's just a very wonderfull work.
Thanks. I'll recommend the Axon AX100 MKII of course.., but the Roland GR-20 is a bit cheaper. You could also just get a guitar-to-MIDI converter and use it with any midi sound module. if you're planning to use it primarily with a computer and software, you could get the AXON AX50 USB, which is cheaper and has no on-board sounds. And of course, you'll also need a hexaphonic pickup on your guitar (Roland GK or similar) or a synth-ready guitar like Godin, Brian Moore or Fender Roland Ready.
Thanks! I guess you're referring to the Axon guitar synth(?). I know that Musician's friend have it, and I guess many other well-assorted musical instruments stores, too. Read "more info" for more details.
Amazing! Can play same shit with piano, but with quitarr this looks so much cooler :D never seen anyone even thinking about playing that on quitarr, awesome job!!! :D
@Pajak356 Thanks! I used the piano sheet music I have, and used the left and right hand parts as a starting point for my 1st and 2nd guitar parts, but I mixed them a little here and there for better adaption for guitar. I also added a 3rd part (taken from the original organ version) a few places.
Ketil Strand rules forever! Favorite guitarist, narrowly beating out Knopfler and Blackmore. :)
Loved it! very good job.
Absolutely awesome!!!!!
"Left hand", according to my piano arrangement, but I think I switched "hands" here and there where found it more practical. I don't remember exactly, I haven't played this since I recorded it..
@JackLeft13 I bought my piano version in a sheet music store ages ago, but I also have an organ version that I found on the internet. I don't remember the exact web address, but if you just search for "sheet music toccata and fugue in d minor bach", I'm sure you'll find it.
@Houhi431 Thanks! By the way, my new solo album will be available at cdbaby any day now, it includes a new version of Toccata and Fugue, plus Canon Rock with a Twist and 9 of my own compositions.
Ketil
Awesome once again!
great version ,enjoyed it ,,still like organ players the best since they play three parts at the same time together (must be real maniacal to be able to do that);-)
Thanks! Yeah, I'm sorry, geocities messes up my mp3 links all the time )-: But from time to time they actually work, so please try again later..
@MrMKFAN Thank you very much, and yeah, I would love to do more Bach or maybe Mozart or other classical stuff, if an when I can find the time.. ;-)
bravo man,bravo !!!
ur a great guitar player
Thanks! I haven't really thought about that, but if I had the right duet partner I guess that would have been really cool..!
1. 6th string tuned down to D,otherwise standard tuning. 2. Mainly left and right hands from the piano version that I have, but on some places I also added a third voice (taken from the organ version) 3. maybe, if I get the time.. ;-)
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Regards, Ketil
Yes, like I said in "more info" I added a third track on a few small sections..
Thanks! Yeah, the hex fuzz is cool, isn't it? And you're right, I spent quite a few hours on this..
FANTaSTIC!
Yep, that's right. The original built-in pickup is unfortunately not compatible with the 13-pin system that is used today.
@rednebb actually since i posted that comment i have found a full tab for toccata and fugue on songsterr (not to spam or anything)
..That's quite a compliment, thanks!
Oh, that.. No, it's an old Ibanez Custom Agent, a special LP copy with beautiful pearl inlays on the body behind the bridge
OH god, this is AWESOME!!
Takk! Har ikke tabs dessverre, jeg brukte vanlige noter. Men jeg vet det finnes flere tab-versjoner på nettet, bl.a. på ultimate-guitar. Lykke til!
I only need to listen to this guy 1 minute to know I was gonna push the like button XD!
@VrUmPaLiV Thank you very much!
I 've learned this piece on guitar aswell, this is indeed a very tricky one to learn. To bad I can't play it as clean as you did. Nicely done!
But why did you only play the fugue and not the toccata? That's an awesome piece either.
that was awesome man
incredible
Well, this is awesome.
Thanks, and yes, it did..
that's just goddamn awesome!!
Thanks! Yeah, it wasn't easy, I spent many, many hours finishing this, but it was worth it..!
This Guy is My Hero!!!=D
@oblivion4lcf Thanks! Hehe, no.. I just did some demo videos for the european distributor, g66.
