►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.

In any pokemon game, all you need to do is only level your starter and you just steamroll through the game easily.

An example of the term, "being in the red" actually being a good thing. I like that you did it this way to add a risk factor to what would have otherwise been a series of crazy-easy battles.
For sure but I welcome easy runs too. I’m so invested in how low you can take the time that it’s just as fun for me personally.
I question the math on it. If it saves you a 3rd if a second on each Pokémon that comes out, but you have to waste time getting into red I would think the multiple times you had to waste time getting back wouldn't be worth it.

Absolutely psyched red bar made it in. I think it ends up being one of the coolest aspects of the vanilla Red speedrun, having the ability to play right on the edge of risk and reward and eek out just a little bit of extra time with some risk. I don't think there is going to be a Pokemon that can carry red bar for as long as Mega Mewtwo Y will be able to, but I think there's potentially a lot of smart usage of it I'm excited to be able to see.

Appreciate it! It’s a very weird way to play the game but it does complicate some other mons. It’s already difficult to plan a good route as is but a Pokémon like Zapdos could probably swing it for a decent stretch but knowing how far would be hard under the ‘you only get 3 runs’ format. It was fun though. Maybe regular Mewtwo can red bar it all too.

What an insane run bro , also the amount of luck needed is still like very high to keep the red bar. Not to crit on the wrong moments is also a factor , but then again it has massive special most things would die from a crit anyway. Beast run!
It was a fun one. Thankfully the big rng was all within the first like 8 minutes or so.

Also this was a great run to see including the sprite. This may be the pinnacle of red and psychic type slash is busted in the best possible way.

Agreed but it’s a mega so it took that to dethrone it. As for sound, I haven’t played with sound in forever. I had a program to give me accurate x1 speed sound despite playing at x3 but the audience emphatically hated it lol.

Yea, it would have been more comfortable if Blastoise didn't crit at the end of Rival 6. It was pretty comfy in practice but I rode it out and got some decent footage for my troubles. Thank god for gen 1 AI lol.

Congratulations on a fantastic run Matt! It's easily one of the most impressive gen 1 speedruns I have ever witnessed. I have never actually used Mega Mewtwo Y so, looks like I will have fun using this overpowered Pokémon in the future.
I can't take all the credit. The pokemon is easy to use but figuring out where to really trim time was fun to map out.
The moment I saw mewtwo Y I grabbed the while 2liter soda pop and family size chips lol I'm ready.
On a real note, though, I enjoy enjoy all your content, and even though I don't drop a comment on every video, I still leave a like.

Since red bar is intentionnal in this run, maybe you could swap the bruises on the art with an angry mark or angry eyebrows :( => >:( for Mewtwo Y as he's getting serious.
Yes it's new art to make, but it may be the lowest effort new art ever. Bonus points if you leave the selection box around the eyebrows visible.
That’s not a bad idea but I generally design the overlay, the ROM and all that then come to conclusions like this way later in the routing process!

I try to fit in at least 3/4 TCG songs every video! The Mason's Lab Theme and the regular battle theme get me too. The battle theme for sure is something that lives rent free in my head.

I've looked at it but you'd probably be disappointed. Bad typing, subpar moves, and it would just be a stat stick. I've thought about it and maybe one day it can come out but its got a few holes that I look for in elite runs.

Yea, it was just a last second change. I didn't want to heal then that turned into how long can I just stay low lol. Letting Brock beat you up and taking advantage of that was cool though.

Hey GLM, what a video. My fave one so far. As a dad of a 14 year old daughter I have been there and it's a hell of a journey but it's the best. I'm sure u are doing a great job and the video was great. i love the mega evolution runs in gen 1 and seeing the red bar strats and pushing the game to what it can do was so good. More of that please. Pushing limits and coming up with risky plays is great to watch. Your a real one #steinermaths

Yea, I woulda just done another run I guess or took a single reset, which isn't too big of a deal but the Alakazam makes a ton more sense!
This was a fun one! Good run my dude! As for the tier lists, maybe make a Mega tier which includes all Pokemon including megas to compare them to normal mons, but for any vanilla pokemon (cross or 1st gen) just keep them out unless the result is surprisingly stupid good?

Well the problem with one tier list is its basically the cross gen runs with a few exceptions at the top so its basically putting this tier list with all the other Pokemon under it outside of maybe Mewtwo and Alakazam lol. I'll just keep working at it and when I get enough megas, I'll think of a switch.
One of our playground myths was that Tombstoner was a secret TM, and Tombstoner would permanently kill the target Pokémon and remove it from the opponent's party. 😂

I saw this 25 minutes after it dropped when I was with my girlfriend, and I gasped so loud that she thought something happened, and I had to explain to her that one of the UA-camrs I watch implemented a better version of the best Pokémon for the original game and is going to absolutely annihilate the game with it

13:47 I believe you can technically skip the Pokémon Tower heal by fighting an optional Channeler nearby and having her walk to you, but off the top of my head I’d guess that takes longer than healing and manipulating damage to get back to redbar, not to mention that it might make PP management more difficult.
(Also, I bet many other Uber-tier legendaries and Megas could maintain redbar, but I’m not sure it’s the most interesting angle for repeated videos. 🤔)
That sounds like a wild Pokemon to have for that game lol. That's an interesting anecdote about the Channeler. maybe in this specific situation its something to consider but generally in 99.9% of situations, skipping battles is always the faster way to go about it.
Lol, I hoped you’d do a run like this when I saw the learn set for psycho cut but it didn’t occur to me just how many ways mewtwo y really just breaks Gen 1. Of course you can red bar with an absolute stat stick with completely broken typing and move pool that takes advantage of every bit of jank. Great run, that was a fun watch, hope the wife and the kiddo are doing good brother.
Things are great! Yea this is just about as peak gen 1 dominance as you could ever get. I think that this is about as high as the bar could ever be taken.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 glad to hear it man! Yeah, no kidding, this is the most raw firepower you can bring to this format, idk what would even really compete. Mega mewtwo x is strictly worse without the physical special split and mega ray is less focused, lacks a high crit move and has a x4 weakness. Maybe if palkia started with spacial rend lol.
I had several comments for doing X but its just strictly worse in all aspects. I'll get around to Dialga/Palkia/Giratina. I really want to redo those from the old sanqui runs I did years ago but I'm just seeing where the wind takes me lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Exactly yeah, fighting is just a bad type to have in gen 1, see poliwrath lol, and the stat spread is worse than Y in every important way and you still don’t have a stab move that hits opposing psychic types. That’ll be interesting whenever you get around to them, those old runs are kinda rough for sure. Do your thing man, it always makes for interesting content
Man, one kid is easy. It’s an adjustment, but easy. Two kids is hard. At first two seems easy, but quickly it gets more difficult.
One at a time is the goal. Maybe in 25 years I'll think of another. One is enough while working, actively being in school to finish up another bachelors, and just all the busy things in life.

Though a lack of fighting-type moves could be a small problem for it

Oh yea. Machamp and good fighting types in general really dominate there. Just get HP Ghost and you are good to go with Bulk Up!
I've been inspired by TerminalMontage's Paradox Pokemon Battle Royale: How well would Miraidon fare? It probably won't have Electro Drift until the league, but it does start with Dragon Breath to breeze through Brock, a rarity for Electric-types, and it can still get Thunderbolt after Surge, which is close enough in power to Electro Drift to see it through most of the game. Surely this, alongside its greater stats, should let it stand up to Alolan Raichu at least?
Its special isn't quite as high as Goodra (only base 135), but it makes up for it with its whopping base 135 Speed giving it a high crit rate, and naturally learning Agility at 35 lets it accrue badge boosts, while Goodra has nothing of the sort.
The other three finalists of TerminalMontage's video don't really fare very well. Flutter Mane is haunted by the fact that Ghost is a physical typing in Gens 1-3 (meaning it doesn't get a usable STAB until 35 with Dazzling Gleam; it _does_ get a STAB move earlier, but that STAB move is Astonish, which A: is physical in gen 1, running off of Flutter's cruddy base 55 Attack, and B: is extremely low base power), Scream Tail doesn't get a STAB move period until level 42 with Play Rough, and Iron Bundle has to not only deal with starting with only Present, but also its strongest STAB being Powder Snow until level 42 where it learns Freeze-Dry (or Celadon City for the Ice Beam TM), though I guess Whirlpool (which Bundle gets at 14) would be kinda broken with Gen 1 Trapping Mechanics coming off of Bundle's insane speed?
Before the baby, I was thinking about a Miraidon vs Koraidon video but VS videos take forever and I'm not sure if I have time. ATM, I'm trying to finalize my Emerald workflow to get those videos to start releasing and then I want to circle back to some really old cross gen runs to see but I wouldn't rule them out. I think it would be pretty decent for sure. Those are solid ideas. If the Iron Thorns video or Tinkaton took off more, I would have probably kept going but there are like 1,000 Pokemon so its always hard to narrow down what to do.

I've done regular but the sad fact is that no matter what generation, he struggles a bit at Brock and if you struggle at any point for even a second, you don't stand a chance on this tier list.

Mega Mewtwo Y was definitely pushing the boundaries for a top tier, without mistakes ,run in gen 1. Because after all it has it all, almost 200 special with the best typing and some great stab options, and let's not forget amnesia. These factors made the red bar strategy a very viable option 😮,even though you'll need a specific luck to make sure quick attack or sand attack will ruin your run. I bet that a lot of runs(and time too) were lost due to that, and that makes me appreciate that run even more, because I would have given up for sure ,to have that kind of luck,and even more if I don't really have the time to put into that.😂😂😂 Wow, you're amazing for pulling that thing off.😊
I bet that even if it had to use weak moves (I mean bad moves or those that thier base power is less than 60),it would have a great time, maybe even a solid B tier finish.🤔
It wasn't all that bad just because the worst parts were like 7-9 minutes of real time so it was a fast reset. The triple Pidgey girl was really frustrating lol. I also think that if it just had basic moves, it would still do great but it was a treat to design and play!

By the way,the back sprite was really cool. Doing a good gen 1 sprite is challenging, because you have less colours and the size is smaller than in gen 2 for example.🤔
You never think about her but some runs she has given me a lot to worry about. In a perfect world, I'd never have to restart and I even do in game time just to not have to full reset all the time for very minor mistakes but it comes with the territory. Things like that make me wish I had just done Jrose 'one and done' style format lol. It would be so easy to get videos out.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yup,💯! Back when I started I thought I was going to do one run and be done,but because I'm a perfectionist that wants every single run to be my best I tend to start over with most of my runs for about 10 times at least.😂😂

I feel like your niche should be using every/any Pokémon to see how’d they’d do in Gen 1. Megas, legendaries, paradox, ultra beasts, regional forms, anything goes. So definitely keep them megas up there.
We've done a lot! I think Ultra Beasts are the last I didn't tackle but I scrapped a run a long time ago with Buzzwole so I'm sure it'll come back sometime.

It's impressive that Alolan Ninetales still manages to stay in the top 3 despite not having crazy stats, with it being only now dethroned from 1st. I guess it's due to Ice being surprisingly good in Gen I.
Yea, one day I'll do a statistical breakdown of types, average runs, etc and Ice really is the pound for pound best rated typing in the game. You aren't wrong and I can prove it factually lol. Ninetales is still the best non-mega though.

Mega Mewtwo Y: faster, smarter, stronger 😁
I'm a big fan of Megas, so I'm glad to see more Mega runs no matter what. Personally I kinda wanna see Mega Garchomp. In-game, its lower Speed from regular Garchomp severely holds it back, but I imagine in Gen 1 it won't pose nearly as much of an issue for it-but it will certainly appreciate the extra Attack.
I will do Garchomp soon. I had it planned a while ago until life got a little busy so the regular Chomp will be soon...ish? Maybe August lol.
"We set out to create the strongest Pokemon in the world... and we succeeded." Yeah, that quote is very appropriate here. Though, I'm curious as to how X will match up. I doubt it will surpass Y's monstrous abilities, but I think it could put in a top 10 performance.

My worry was that the Psychic start of regular Mewtwo would be too much and the extra stats but only Confusion of Y might have a slower start to not make the it a clear winner.

Smh, I still need to do the regular run. I did the blind run on stream like 6 months ago but I'm slow lol.
I’d imagine that since the Pokémon is still kind of beefy, I’d have given it normal potions while in red health (keeping it in red but having more HP) so that the weaker priority moves wouldn’t kill mewtwo. Or is the time to do it not worth it if you’re pushing the envelope on the run?
Menuing in general is the slowest thing in the game and it goes triple for higher speeds. I didn't even buy potions lol.

I've looked at the learnset and I just don't see it. It learns great things late but would need something like Brutal Swing to get through ghosts and would just turn into a body slam/swords dance user without access to coverage like EQ/Rock Slide.
Do you think mew two is the fastest pokemon in every game? or is there one that can dethrone it? I think nihelago might be able to but idk.
Only generation 1. Psychic gets nerfed hard in gen 2 and then its even worse in gen 3 where the first mandatory trainer has a dark type lol.
I say keep megas like they are now and when you've got 10, start a separate list just for them, could be very interesting, especially taking into account that some got type changes, looking at you Gyarados.
Yea, that sounds smart but with Emerald runs coming soon..ish that leaves me with 3 generations and cross gen runs to juggle so getting to 10 megas might take a while!

Mega Mewtwo Y and Alolan Ninetales have just under 3 minutes between them. It's feasible that without red bar strats; the extra time for cries and healing could've just pushed MMY into 2nd place.
I think I said it at some point but I was beating that time before red bar strats but the main difference is I don't think Ninetales could maintain red bar the whole game, definitely not the no heal Elite 4 part.
