  • Jonathan Lynch thinning one of their reprod stands while his Uncle Rick Lynch runs the skidder. Mike was running the shovel and stacking brush off in the distance. The Lynch Brothers grow and manage some of the nicest timber I have ever seen.

Just out of curiosity. Why does he buck up the top in the brush after he’s takin a log out of it? Why not take top to brush pile? Seems a lot more convenient for you guys, don’t get me wrong. However it seems like most landowners aren’t a fan of that.

It's his own property. They leave the brush in the trees to.decompose back in the ground but cutting the top.smaller keeps it a little tidier.

Are they just sent for pulp Craig? Here they normally do just 1 thinning planted every 6' take out every second tree after 10-12years.

They will send them for saw logs if they make 5 inch on the small end otherwise it goes for pulp. Most large companies and the state do a pre-comercial thinning around 10 years old where they slash every other one. Then they will do a commercial thinning around 26 to 30 years old and then harvest around 40 to 50 years old. Lynch's primarily log their own timber so they can put in the extra effort to thin as many as 3 or 4 times with less volume each time. They also tend to let their timber grow to 70 plus years old before clear cutting. Right now they are logging 100 year old stuff.

@@cambrissette7378 they are cutting it for the purpose if thinning to allow the other trees to grow better. The patch of timber they are clear cutting is 100 years old
