  • It's a pretty long video because I was trying to be thorough about tracking progress on footwork, turns, jumps, so if you make it all the way thru without getting bored, thank you!
    I do yearly progress videos for my own sanity. Otherwise, I feel like I'm not improving and will look ugly forever. I mean, I still look ugly, but not as ugly as Year 1, so it's something. Maybe by Year 10 I won't want to barf into a bag when watching videos of myself, but who knows.
    I've taken class with the kids almost every day for the past 4 years. I also do figure skating almost every day and I keep yearly video progress of that too for the same reasons.

    As a ballet teacher, I can definitely tell you've been putting a lot of work and effort and the improvements are quite noticeable. Excellent work! However, you're not ready for pointe, and you weren't ready when you started. As exciting as pointe is, adults bone structure has been completely formed without the training that kids and teens have, so with even more reason you have to gain much more strength and flexibility, and not only in your feet, but in your core. When you're going on to pointe, you can see your shoes breaking down very low and that's because you're not lifting your heels to roll fully onto point. The shoes choice can also play a part, but I don't see yourself lifting with your core. And that's ok. You'll get there, but this can really do more harm than good. Practise with strength bands and increase your ankle range, toes movement autonomy and independence, and your core strenghth. You'll be ready for pointe if you keep going, but right now you're not ready and it's damaging your body. I'm not sure why teachers let you be on pointe, it's serious business.

      what part of this is breaking low? imgur.com/F10x6ae
      Did you just skim the video and look for the worst possible moments? The only shoes that were absolutely terrible fit for me was the 2021 clips and I basically threw those shoes out a week later because they were not good at all.
      This video is tracking the current status of everything, the good and the bad. It's not here to be a polished, sanitized record of only the stuff I do well.
      I think my feet look ridiculously good on barre for class when we're just doing relevees and echappes etc. I look better than most of the kids. When we get off barre, I struggle to push those ankles as far, but the only way its going to get better is to keep trying. And it is getting better. Those ankles are further this year than they were last year when I was off barre. Many things I couldn't do last year I can suddenly do this year simply because I'm stronger.
      I wish I could take a secret video of class that would display all of the kids' feet and how BAD many of these kids look, no turnout etc. But maybe people online would brush it off as "well those are kids. They only weigh 50lbs so it doesn't matter if their technique is way worse than yours."
      But even if they look really bad at the beginning, within 2-3 years, the ones that don't give up start to look really good. I don't know if there's two different methodologies of schools: (1)"you don't go on pointe until everything is pristine" vs (2) "You're going to look like crap at first, but things will change within a few years". Or if it's just a desire to be harder on adults because they weigh more than the 50lb kids.
      People online are like: "You're going to get injured or damaged yourself etc etc." And I'm like: "STILL not injured. Still not in any kind of pain and doing great." The only ones with injuries are the kids and that's always from stupid things like miscalculated jete jumps, not pointe work.
      I'm leaving your comment up because I do value your input and I do appreciate peoples' various thoughts. Just wish I could secretly film the rest of the class (and maybe other neighboring schools) be like: "Are you sure the internet isn't full of very sanitized versions of ballet?" For example, when my school makes social media promo videos, they only ask the most talented and cleanest lines dancers to be in it. They don't display every kid to the world. It's a very, very polished and sanitized version of what class actually looks like. In a large city and a competitive school that you have to FIGHT to get into, I could see them being very selective and harsh and having a full class of extreme quality dancers. But for schools in smaller areas that accept any kid, they're only going to display their best online and hide the rest.

      @@GoddessArwen17 Regardless of how poorly the other kids look, the previous commenter was pointing out your progress specifically. It wasn't meant to be a comparison. In almost all of the clips, including the latest 2022 clips with the new shoes, you're knuckling pretty badly. You're not completely over your box. Of course not every pointe video is going to look pristine, but I wouldn't let my students off the barre if their feet were still struggling with getting over their box and/or knuckling. Absolutely you should be doing exercises at the barre, but I'm surprised your teacher let you into centre.

      Sometimes ppl just need to keep negativity to themselves. There was no need to come on a woman’s video and act like you know it all. This woman is not a child, she doesn’t need that teachers “advise” and knows what’s best for her. If she wasn’t ready for pointe her own teacher would have said something or she would have noticed something herself.

    • @vivianleenet
      @vivianleenet Рік тому +88

      @@blackfire9125 I disagree with you. A lot of adult ballet dancers are still beginners, and beginners should still follow the advice of those who have literally spent their entire lives perfecting this craft. Dancing en pointe without proper technique is *dangerous*. It's akin to letting someone, idk, use the uneven bars without knowing how to properly dismount. No teacher would do that. Actually, if you read some of this woman's reddit posts, you'll learn that her teacher actually did NOT want her en pointe. Instead, this woman went online, bought her own pointe shoes, and learned pointe on her own (at least initially, it seems like she might be in a studio now). That means all her pointe basics are on shaky foundation, and it shows. Look, with ballet it is really obvious when someone is not ready to proceed to the next level, and multiple posters have commented both on her UA-cam and reddit posts saying otherwise. It's up to her to listen or not. Regardless, it's not safe. I'm not trying to spread negativity - I think she has improved greatly, and some of her technique on flat shoes looks great (those pirouettes from fifth are wonderful!) But she's not ready for pointe in centre.

    Some tips from a ballerina in training, make sure you're holding the arms from the back and keeping proper hand positioning. Also working on stregthing, flexibility and turn out should be a big priority for you. However you should not be en pointe your shoes are breaking too low and you do not have enough strength to strongly be en pointe. Please work more on your basics so you do not hurt yourself (7:34 shows your shoe breaking too low)

    • @GoddessArwen17
      @GoddessArwen17  Рік тому

      3:19. 3:36, not breaking too low, but these were the paper mache shoes I crushed in hours. I can't afford to buy a new pair of shoes after every class as a beginner. Even our most advanced dancers usually make their shoes last a week or two of classes.
      4:30, 5:00 the shitty gaynor shoes I threw out the next day. They were pulling me back like crazy no matter how hard I tried to fight it, and there is no modifying where Gaynor breaks.
      7:13, 10:54 the shoes I've been in for awhile. Still working on getting my ankles forward far enough at all times. I have really flexible feet that try to "help" out my ankles in getting over the box. So if I start thinking too much about arms and other stuff, the technique of the ankles starts to creep back.
      I'm thinking I'm going to have to try to film stuff over a longer period of time. Because when I do these yearly videos, I'm rushing, trying to get everything finished in 2 hours or less. It makes me tired and rushed. The more tired I get and the more rushed I get, the more the technique of the ankles starts to creep away.
      10:54 looks good to me. But then 11:15, I've allowed the ankle technique to slide away again. From what I remember, I was trying to focus on the timing of the pas de bouree, plus being really tired at that point after almost 2 hours of rushed pointework trying to film everything in one day.
      If I had someone filming me, plus a teacher standing right there yelling at me "Ankles!" "Arms!" "Spot!" every time I forget something, plus filming over several days so I'm not exhausted and rushed. Doing my own filming in 2 hours by myself is hard. I don't even have enough time to review the video to see if there obvious stuff I forgot to do. And even if I did have time, doing multiple run-thrus is exhausting, which goes back to the idea of filming over a longer period of time instead of trying to get everything "perfect" in just 2 hours.

    I am 25 and I just started ballet. The progress I am making is slow, because the teacher that I have takes her time so that we and our bodies can develop as dancers. Watching this motivates me to keep going and to trust the process. There is a recital coming up, and we don’t really have dance moves yet, we are still working on technique and we don’t even go across the floor yet. And that’s okay with me. I did say It didn’t matter how long it took as long as it is done correctly. However there are people who want to watch me preform… and I don’t think I will have much to show them. I want the support and people to believe in me.. It doesn’t help that I work, and don’t have time or space at home to practice.. so the studio is literally the only place once a week. But even still because my teacher is so repetitive with her teaching… it makes able to master what I am given.. so I am even grateful I am finally dancing and doing what I love. I can’t wait to see it come to fruition. And same with your journey it is inspiring to watch you progress over the years. Some of the things I was like no way that you can do already! Impressive. I don’t know how fast or slow my journey will be… but it is nice to see dancers at beginner level. I don’t know when I’ll go on pointe… but I don’t want to rush. I like watching my legs get stronger and toned! I just want to say, for you to keep going! You will find your way. And your legs got so much toned and stronger omg!! People will criticize, but it is good to listen and apply what you can. My teacher told me to slide the leg up, instead of lift it, keep your toes on your leg pointed and turned out. Ohh and most of all find your natural turn out and don’t push it too far back from your center and hips. I hope you find that useful 😊

One thing I would say is, make sure to pointe your feet when you are doing pirouettes. I am very sure your teacher has told you this, but just because you are wearing pointe shoes, does not mean you dont need to pointe. I understand that when you only have 4-5 years of training this may be more challenging, but i will say it gets easier. Good luck and keep up the amazing work!

      Things that determine how pointe work will affect your feet over time:
      1. Technique and being strong enough - the stronger you are, and the better your technique, the safer it is to be on pointe. Taking ballet classes increases your strength and your technique, plus a teacher to assess your technique and strength level.
      2. Proper fitting shoes. This is a combination of your teacher's advice, a good pointe shoe fitter, and your own experience over time. Most dancers have to try several pairs of shoes before they find the "right" one. So the first year on pointe is definitely the most challenging as you try to find the right shoes and improve your technique.
      3. BODY WEIGHT. Yes, heavier girls can go on pointe, but the heavier you are, the more dangerous it gets. Really I'm not an "optimal" weight, I'm just at "OK" weight. That goes for anything athletic you do in life, the lighter you are and the stronger you are, the easier and safer it is.... unless it's something like sumo wrestling or american football I guess lol, since weight and bulk are an advantage in those sports.
      In conclusion, with proper technique, teacher and good shoes, you'll be fine. The scary videos you see of professional dancers with torn up feet, They dance a crazy number of hours per day, year after year. They get torn up because they don't get enough time to rest and recover since they're getting paid to dance a ridiculous number of hours per day. (8+ and usually more). The benefit of doing ballet as a hobby means you can rest and recover when you need to. You don't have to break yourself since it's not your career.

    • @GoddessArwen17
      @GoddessArwen17  Рік тому +4

      Depends on your age. If you're looking at age 3-7, they typically only do a few hours per week. Age 8-12 are often doing 10-14-ish hours per week if their goal is to go professional one day. Age 13+ with professional goals are usually doing a lot of hours: like 4+ hours a day. Since I'm an adult and not going professional, I do roughly 8-10 hours per week, which is 1.5hr class most days of the week. I also do 7-10 hours per week in figure skating. So I actually am doing 4 hours of exercise per day, but 50% of that is ballet and 50% is skating.
