I lived in this village (Peyia) for some two years doing anthropological fieldwork in the late 1970's and the villagers of course knew this song which they were very proud of. Then, it was the last village from Nicosia. The road stopped there. Regrettably, the only traditional thing left in Peyia is now the song, for it has changed beyond recognition...
The oud player simultaneously sings his entire blistering solo and it is so cool. Then at about 3:10, he stops, the vocalist jumps back in and it's a musical explosion worthy of a metal show. This is an incredible performance that I watch each time the algorithm gives it to me. Bravo!
Again, thank you algorithm. I'm a metal guitarist and find this to be sublimely beautiful on all levels. Women singing is the pinnacle of sound on earth and this woman is amazing. All the musicians are wonderful but as a guitarist i key in on the lute/oud/bazouki player. He must be on a level with EVH and Jake Shimabukura in his craft. His singing with his solo is outta sight. He's incredible. Everything about this performance makes one glad to be alive.
I'm Russian and I listen a lot of ethnic music, and in my opinion this is brilliant. Please release more similar content) Your arrangement is truly amazing.
After hearing this song in the traditional way . . . . . you my dear have brought it into a new light. Thank you for keeping these songs alive and most important your presentation is beautifully done.
This song was chosen by the Cypriots in the category of Nature and Season for the European Union Songbook. Just published on November 5th 2024. The printed songbook comes with a free app - and we have gladly added this version of the song as audio example. The human force expressed in this version makes one wonder: What is folk songs if not the source and voice of the ancient soul of mankind?
This is beautiful, Andrea! Even though I don't understand the words, music is a universal language and I am drawn to folk music, no matter it's origin. Well done.
If the title was in more languages then it would definitely have 20x the views it currently has. Just an advice from a friendly guy to some amazing musicians that deserve more...
Fabulous music and ensemble... The music is absolutely fascinating. May lots of good winds follow you all on the road to success in showcasing the music of Cyprus....And please, please, post lots more.....
Andrea I have a new found respect for how talented you are I’ve heard you sing with Brooklyn fragrance lover but this even though I can’t understand it no doubt you have a beautiful voice your the complete package
Here it is (courtesy of a translation on this website:www.mousalyra.com.cy/images/pdf/kiprea-foni-kalos-irtan-oi-ksenoi-mas_en.pdf ): I Vrisi ton Pegiotisson (The fountain of the Peyia girls) The fountain of the Peyia girls Is all bedecked with arches And there their pitchers do they fill All Peyia girls / the pretty Paphian girls The fountain of the Peyia girls A tap it has as well And those who have an aching heart Can drink from it and heal The fountain of the Peyia girls With leeches has it filled Its water though, it still is good And makes for pretty lasses. Above it stands the village church, Below the church the fountain Peyia, you beautiful village, Who can leave you behind?
This is a poem about the young women of Peyia (Peyiotisses) that probably dates from the 1930s. If you want the translation it is available buried in this link: www.mousalyra.com.cy/images/pdf/kiprea-foni-kalos-irtan-oi-ksenoi-mas_en.pdf

This is actually the Cypriot dialect which is a dialect of the Greek language. As a speaker and an investigator of this dialect I believe is more like a dialect on the base of ancient Greek with a lot of influence by Latin and Italian (which is the main foreign language that influenced the Cypriot dialect) with some Turkish and old frankish influences (but not so much as Italian did). Also, the Cypriot dialect reserves in a large scale many ancient Greek accents, grammar, vocabulary and pronouns in a scale that even modern Greek language does not include.
This is Cypriot Greek and it sounds different than modern Greek. Cypriot Greek is a combination of the ancient ArcadoCypriot Greek, Byzantine Greek and a lot of loan words from Italian, French and Turkish
That was amazing. Bravo Andrea. I just subscribed to your channel. I sent you a Facebook friend request. I would also like to invite you to become a member of the Cyprus Culture group on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/cyprusculture/

Here it is (courtesy of a translation on this website:www.mousalyra.com.cy/images/pdf/kiprea-foni-kalos-irtan-oi-ksenoi-mas_en.pdf ):
I Vrisi ton Pegiotisson
(The fountain of the Peyia girls)
The fountain of the Peyia girls
Is all bedecked with arches
And there their pitchers do they fill
All Peyia girls / the pretty Paphian girls
The fountain of the Peyia girls
A tap it has as well
And those who have an aching heart Can drink from it and heal
The fountain of the Peyia girls With leeches has it filled
Its water though, it still is good And makes for pretty lasses.
Above it stands the village church, Below the church the fountain Peyia, you beautiful village,
Who can leave you behind?
Outstanding performance you guys! Andrea is an absolute goddess. Can anyone tell me what kinda drum that is?
It’s a frame drum
I appreciate if anyone point me to a translation to English, I feel that there is a significate meaning in it.
Andrea Charls,
Is it in western chromatic tuning/scale, or is it in a special maqam?
What is the tuning of the scale?
Κατεβαιτε αγγελοι
Ουάου! Εκυκλοφόρησε κάπου τούτη η ηχογράφηση???
Is there an album I could buy?
what meaning of this song?
ΕΥΓΕ ΠΑΙΔΕΣ...
ΕΜΟΡΦΟΝ

The woman heart is one
Greek language sounds like a mixture of Spanish, Hebrew and Russian.
You forgot to add Turkish into the mixture, maybe Italian....
Hellenic, latin, turkish, very little hebrew
the russian part,,you have it in reverse

How is this Turkish? I only hear the Cypriot dialect
Bu türkü Kıbrıslılarındır. Sözlerini anlayamazsanız da utanmadan sahiplenmeye çalışıyorsunuz.
Your from Peya
You have come in history 1200 AC and you claim you discovered the universe,we are here 3000 BC, everything you have is stolen, you look around in turkey and Cyprus everything is greekeomanbyzantioum
Everything you have is stolen, you have nothing give to humanity, only you're hand is full of blood of armenians, assyrians, greeks,so no one believes you, your turk!!
