Seriously that logo thing or disclaimer in a digitally enhanced photo needs to be a permanent law from now on that every tech company needs to follow. Then we'll see everyone for who they're atleast.
This is so fundamentally true, but it's been happening way before we even had the ability to augment the way we look. We're unhappy with ourselves because we have been taught that we oughta be, even if we know better. Awesome stuff Trevor, seems like all social media has done is accelerate the social distortion that we as people endure-with others but more importantly ourselves!
Thanks for taking this issue up Trevor! I think it all starts with those little conversations we have as a family. We need to tell our children more often that they're beautiful just the way they are. As parents, we need to be a bit more vigilant to ensure our kids get that reality check.
Much respect to those who came clean about they way they edited their photos. Imagine how hard it must be to fight the urge to embelish themselves very easily, let alone show themselves how they really are and explain the process of how they edited their photos. Takes a lot of courage.
I suddenly remember one of the Kardashian (idk why i forget their name) mad because of her untouched photo is shared around in internet. Many people are insecure about physical appearance when actually other don't pay much attention because each of us worry about ourselves. We are our worst critics
thts why I've vowed to myself that I can use background filters to change the picture color, but I will never filter or use those apps that change ur body type or face. Tht stuff can mess with ur own self esteem in a dangerous way
It’s just not the filtered images of people. But also the fact that they show off on social media can create problems like comparing our selves to other people when they don’t even know it’s real or not.
Limit their access. My household has no devices at the dinner table, that includes tv and radio. Dinners compulsory on a school night even if its 3pm so the kids can go to their after school activities. Dinner time was family time where we just talked and ate, asked for advice, banter etc etc. No devices in the morning til chores are done. Kids get their phones when they go to school. Learned the hard way that it actually helps to give the kids their phone in high school. No devices after 8.30pm on a school night. Most times kids are just following their friends or other kids at school and trying to keep up with the latest trends.
@@ricardocabeza6006 my bad lol. The more exposure these kids are to the Kartrashians and those like them that paint a picture of "perfection", the more that these kids will lead them to a place that they'll never be. Keep reminding your kids they are beautiful and to embrace their flaws. There is so much out there we need to watch out for.
Finally Finally, I'm glad you brought up this topic. This needs to be told to the world. I was better off until social media came & spread like a virus and I was left behind wondering why life is changing so rapidly.
I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and spoken word performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my UA-cam channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤
I’ve been off of social media, FB, IG etc. for years for various reason but it’s sad to hear how so many people young and old are struggling with body image issues over what they constantly see online. So many want to be perfect for a photo for whatever reason instead of loving themselves unfiltered.
I'm almost never on social media, anyway. The few times I am, I almost never post pics of myself. I don't get filters. It's like posting a touched up image on a dating profile. Eventually, the person will see you IRL and see that you aren't 180 pounds and ripped. Who cares? I'd rather someone be honest with me. Also, what idiot parent/doctor is letting a teenager get these procedures? Their bodies are still growing. If they want to do it after they turn 18, sure. Doing this to a minor should be some form of child abuse.
The social media impact on mental health is real. As someone going into the mental health field, I can't imagine the types of disorders that might come from this decade of idealizing unattainable perfection standards. It's evident that people are searching for worth and value in all the wrong places.
as a 13 year old, i find this snapchat dysmorphia of my generation sad, but also completely predictable. social media apps need to change or outright be revoked; this is a serious problem.
This won't help everyone buy I trick I noticed worked for me is using the app but with no filter, the way I notice it helped is when I opened my camera app I could see things that weren't even there but whne I open Snapchat for example and don't select a filter my brain is somewhat tricked and I don't even focus on the imperfections anymore.
In the last few years, women have started idolizing me for wearing shorts without shaving my legs. It is the strangest thing to have people treat you like a hero for. They spend all of their time and money altering their body when they aren't even the ones who want it.
@@NiaLaLa_V I just met you and I love you. I don't usually shill books, but I really want to read Justine Bateman's; she talks about how it's all about upkeep. And I think it's great that you gave up shaving!
There’s so much more toxicity on social media outside of photos. I stopped using Facebook 4 years ago (I’m 29) and photos had nothing to do with it. I saw friends making life decisions based on how popular the post about it would be, friends getting into vicious debates they otherwise never would’ve, and no one uses it in moderation. But I do agree with this piece.
Adding another thank you for bringing this issue up. Many parents also watch your show. I hope we all think more about what we are doing in front of our kids, and allowing them to be apart of.
I really loveeee that you spoke out on this issue as a mother of a little girl I worry about these things and also am constantly aware of what example I set regarding social media!
I honestly didn't know this disorder existed. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I shall inform my friend Karen about it so that she stops applying random filters on her camera during the next meeting.
This is not a new issue. Society has always caused these feelings in young girls (and I'm sure some boys)... Yes, it's gotten more prevalent - like everything else negative in this world 😟 As always, we can help by setting an example to those around us by being confident in who we are and how we look ❤️
It has gotten worse and worse. Sure it used to be bad, you'd see faces in the supermarket magazine aisle or in your teen girl magazine. But social media has a fake authenticness to it that disguises the use of a filter, and the sheer volume of modified images combined with leaps and bounds in technology have to be worse. If seeing some photoshopped images of models is bad, imagine seeing photoshopped images of all your classmates all the time. Like hundreds a day.

When I was little, my parents would always tell me that your inside is more important than your appearance. Nowadays people straightout worship the goodlooking. It doesn't help that they are famous and earn a lot of money. In this world, can you blame a teenager for wanting plastic surgery?
This isn't new. People have had body image issues for ages. Today, it's filters on social media. Twenty years ago, it's airbrushed photos on magazine covers. The problem could be this: we spend more time talking about the issue of body image instead of talking about what can be done instead.
I dont think you would find many people who see themselves as more attractive with smaller eyes and a bigger nose. People tend to use make up and highlighter to get the opposite effect, because bigger eyes and a smaller nose are the beauty standards in this country.

The question needs to be much deeper, why do we do what we do on social media? When we find the root cause we have a real solution. If we can notice that selfie culture, being anxious about follower or likes, indulging in online arguments and so on has much deeper root in human psyche.
Social media is designed in every way to set off our brains. It's purposely addictive, so that it can commodify our lives and sell them to advertisers. Not a problem in our psyche, just predatory capitalism designed to exploit it. None of this is unknown, either.
@@MandalorTeSiit i said we need to look deeper but not being conscious about the nature of psyche and it being manipulated by social media, politicians, advertisers or terrorists and so on is one of the causation of problem, when a system has loop holes which can be exploited by a hacker what do we call it? It's the projection of the shadow, Carl Jung speaks/wrote on it. We can project our shadow on to others and social media THRIVES off of this and the negative impacts it has.

Seriously that logo thing or disclaimer in a digitally enhanced photo needs to be a permanent law from now on that every tech company needs to follow. Then we'll see everyone for who they're atleast.
When the show goes back to being live, all i know is Trevor better not lose the fro or the hoodie.
I'm trying to remember if he wore hoodies even through last summer...
Nahh I wanna see a few suits in the mix!
The fro is amazing 😍
Maybe that’s the whole innocence we lost. We didn’t know what we looked like which made it easier to be happy. Ignorant bliss is great sometimes.

I grew up with Myspace and had a shitload of body dysmorphia and eating disorders. I can't imagine what young women are going through now.

Quit FB, on my way to quitting IG. Neither was adding any value to my life and if I have to get bombarded by ads, I’d rather hang out on YT. 🤷🏽♂️
Thanks for taking this issue up Trevor! I think it all starts with those little conversations we have as a family. We need to tell our children more often that they're beautiful just the way they are. As parents, we need to be a bit more vigilant to ensure our kids get that reality check.
It’s easy for Trevor to say we should be comfortable with our looks when he looks great through the whole pandemic.

I'm a teenager and I love your advice trevor "“The planets gonna die out before you’re 30.” exactly the boost i needed 😁

I'm so glad I live in a country where driving isn't legal until you're 18, except supervised practice.

Eat vitamins, stay fit, and avoid strong UV exposure. That way you can keep your wrinkles to a minimum without filters.

thts why I've vowed to myself that I can use background filters to change the picture color, but I will never filter or use those apps that change ur body type or face. Tht stuff can mess with ur own self esteem in a dangerous way
It’s just not the filtered images of people. But also the fact that they show off on social media can create problems like comparing our selves to other people when they don’t even know it’s real or not.

Social media has become toxic for my kids and their generation. Parents who allow their kids to alter their bodies ain't shyt!!
Hmm. I wonder where these kids learned about altering their bodies before their frontal cortex is fully developed...

@@ricardocabeza6006 my bad lol. The more exposure these kids are to the Kartrashians and those like them that paint a picture of "perfection", the more that these kids will lead them to a place that they'll never be. There are too many kids that are depressed because of the image they want from these celebrities. Too many parents today allow social media to parent their kids instead of the other way around
My child in elementary school began comparing themselves to other students when the zoom calls began during COVID. They kept asking , why don’t I look like so and so? Or saying I look’weird’ ...I kept them away from social media, no cell phones etc.. but the Zoom calls found away to creep up those insecurities at such a young age.
Keep reminding your kids they are beautiful and to embrace their flaws. There is so much out there we need to watch out for.

I’ve been off of social media, FB, IG etc. for years for various reason but it’s sad to hear how so many people young and old are struggling with body image issues over what they constantly see online. So many want to be perfect for a photo for whatever reason instead of loving themselves unfiltered.
pro tip: edit your photos to look fatter that way people you meet will say stuff like "you look great" and " have you been working out?"
Big brain time
pro tip: don’t care what strangers think about you
I was not happy with the photo I took recently, but now i feel better after seeing this. Thank you TDS
It's evident that people are searching for worth and value in all the wrong places.
as a 13 year old, i find this snapchat dysmorphia of my generation sad, but also completely predictable. social media apps need to change or outright be revoked; this is a serious problem.
just delete the app or throw the phone
@@xic777 people get so upset when you throw their phones away though
This won't help everyone buy I trick I noticed worked for me is using the app but with no filter, the way I notice it helped is when I opened my camera app I could see things that weren't even there but whne I open Snapchat for example and don't select a filter my brain is somewhat tricked and I don't even focus on the imperfections anymore.
At 13 years old, I could never write that sentence xD. So, you're already ahead of the curve👏
UNISTAR : I totally agree with you
I have seen this issue coming out for years. I'm glad someone as big as the daily show is talking about it.
Folks being insecure about their looks means big bucks for other folks, you know.
In the last few years, women have started idolizing me for wearing shorts without shaving my legs. It is the strangest thing to have people treat you like a hero for. When I tell them they can do it too it's like I suggested they cut off their own arm, they can't even fathom it. They spend all of their time and money altering their body when they aren't even the ones who want it.
Blame the money
@@scootyang2311 it's the fact that people WANT the money off of other people's dissatisfaction w/their looks, not the money itself.
Thank you so much for talking about this. 🙏🏼 can you please continue doing mental health segments? 😍😇
I started watching this and my kids walked into the room and joined me. I’m glad they did. Thanks for this.

My 2 adult sons emigrated to their paternal UK, 10 and 8 years ago, respectively. My youngest, my daughter, is still living in Cape Town. English is my first language and all 3 of my children went to an English private school when we were living in Centurion. It was only when my younger son came for a brief visit about 5 years ago that I realised, regardless of our first language, we are still inclined to adopt, what I refer to as "South Africanisms". My son asked me a question beginning with " Mum,....?". I answered him with "yes, no, I have not..." whatever and he burst out laughing and said why do you say "yes and no before, answering in the negative. At first I blanked then replied, it comes from the Afrikaans tendency to say "Ja Nee" when thinking about a response to a question. In 2020, I moved from Centurion to the Western Cape, to a town, called Langebaan. My daughter insisted she was no longer going to keep flying to Gauteng if I needed urgent medical care as was necessary when I fell and shattered my knee a couple of years ago. Centurion had gradually become a dominantly English city. I, feel as though I have traveled 40 years back in time. Afrikaans is spoken by 90% of the population here. I had not realised how my verbalisation of Afrikaans had deteriorated over the years. Now, if I hear someone speaking English in a restaurant or shop I immediately look at them, just hoping, I know them. 😂
I came to the comments to see if anyone else noticed the little "Shame, man" 😂😊😊
When I was little, my parents would always tell me that your inside is more important than your appearance. Nowadays people straightout worship the goodlooking. It doesn't help that they are famous and earn a lot of money. In this world, can you blame a teenager for wanting plastic surgery?
The thing is.... no one is blaming teenagers, people blame social media for it and I do so too. It's literally mental.
This isn't new. People have had body image issues for ages. Today, it's filters on social media. Twenty years ago, it's airbrushed photos on magazine covers. The problem could be this: we spend more time talking about the issue of body image instead of talking about what can be done instead.
Thanks, Trevor for touching on these issues. They're lost in the crazy news cycle.
"makes your nose look wider"
Why did she say that as if that makes you less attractive? Smh.
I wondered that, too. It was an odd thing to say.
I mean, let’s be honest... we live in a country where the standard of beauty is clearly based on whiteness and white features.
I dont think you would find many people who see themselves as more attractive with smaller eyes and a bigger nose. People tend to use make up and highlighter to get the opposite effect, because bigger eyes and a smaller nose are the beauty standards in this country.

You wouldn't expect any kid that has been raised to be a critical thinker to look for anime eyes in real life.

Vulnerability right!
It's the projection of the shadow, Carl Jung speaks/wrote on it. We can project our shadow on to others and social media THRIVES off of this and the negative impacts it has.

Every teenager has gone through the exact same thing when it comes to their appearance, we hyper focus on the flaws and ignore the beauty. I'm sure part of it is that we were told we should not show too much love to ourselves, when they really meant, don't have such an ego that you think you're better than everybody else.
