Beastgrip DOF MK3 & iPhone 15 | FIRST LOOK!

- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- In this video I take an early look at the Beastgrip DOF MK3 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
NOTE: I used the 14 Pro Max Beastcage as the 15 series cage was not available at the time of this video. The phone fits in the cage fine, however, once I get the 15 cage I'll do more shooting as it might slightly affect the alignment. Also, the DOF will work with early model phones.

Proud to say I backed this day one. I loved the 2, and it was unfortunately stolen from my car. Can't wait to see how well this performs.
Been waiting on this 😮
I backed it day 1 & preordered another. Can't wait to put them to creative use.
Can't wait for the comparison of shiftcam, moment and reeflex lenses
Yeah that’s definitely in the works, waiting to get a few of the lenses in.
I backed this. Looking good. Were you shooting at a 1.5? What happens when you stop it down? Wouldn't that get rid of the super shallow DoF?
Yeah I was shooting wide-open, which is what I typically do as there is light loss with the adapter. But I will play with that and see if I can get sharper images, and in particular once I get the 15 cage.
That reminds me of a Chinese lens I once had. The edges are all blurry. Heck, it was blurry all the way! But the photos were so dreamy and special
Unless you were using a specialty lens it was probably just bad I guess. :) But this is designed for shallow DOF.
What focal length or lenses do you recommend for this 😮❤
Hi Blake, it’s kind of off topic from the video, but which one you prepared for the cages, Beastgrip pro or the beastcage? I’m trying to decide which one to take, thanks in advance!
Both are great. But if you’re using a DOF (or their lenses) then the Beastcage is probably best as it aligns everything perfectly.
@@iphoneographers great, I guess I’ll go beastcage route, expansion is okay with this one? Like mounting diff accessories, ssd, etc
Thanks for this. I was considering buying it, but that off-centre focal drop-off is not what I was expecting. Composing with rule-of-thirds, etc. completely negates this adapter. Oh well.
It works really well for tighter shots, in particular shooting interviews etc. But anything wider it’s not ideal.
Did you happen to check whether Beastgrip's BeastCam camera app has an issue with focus peaking?
I did not. But I plan on trying it with other apps soon.
Yeah because of the focus vignetting, I don't think this is a practical tool - my eye expects everything on the same plane to share the same amount of focus. I see this also happens on more zoomed-in shots as well so there doesn't appear to be a way around it. Thanks for doing this test and creating a helpful resource!
Yeah that’s one reason they suggest using telephoto lenses and if you’re shooting static in particular it can look very good. That’s why you see a lot of people using this to shoot interviews or b-roll.
DOF, yes, but without the bokeh of the lens. Only blurred
There’s definitely bokeh, lots of it - if you shoot lights, etc. It takes on the characteristics of the lens you attach.
sold me 2
big mistake!
3 has just shipped!
Oops! Yeah, you want the latest for sure.
Will the camera work on older phones before 2023?
The DOFmk3 is not a camera it is an adapter to use traditional camera LENSES with a cellphone camera.
[lens+DOF adapter+cage+cellphone]
For older phones look at the DOFmk2.
@@Pterodactyl-kn3ve I know its an adapter. What I mean is is it compatible with other older phone. The MKDOF2 isn't sold anymore.
Yeah. It’s supposed to be backwards compatible, although I haven’t tested it.
Can’t understand why it doesn’t focus peak? It’s because nothing is in focus.
Not sure exactly as other apps like Filmic Pro focus peaking work well with the DOF. Best guess it’s it thinks it’s out of focus and/or is tuned for the sharper traditional iPhone footage. Though I’ve had similar issues just using external lenses too. The app is still very new and quite buggy.
Its visual shortcoming discounts of being serious film maker tool. Dslr is the only way to get proper bokeh
Actually you can get nice bokeh just using the iPhone by itself, it looks good. You just have to be close to the subject.
what is the name of the slider 00:43
Edelkrone Wing. Link in the video description.
the mouse looks blur to me.
Just too mushy
I have to say, this footage looks terrible. It is like shooting with a super cheap lens. I can’t see the appeal of this for anything except closeups and that’s a big maybe. For me it would be a complete waste of money. Thanks for doing the test.
yeah so crap.. corner focus off, chromatic aberration, halation pretty much everywhere. Waste of money
There’s no chromatic aberration or halation. But if there was, that would actually be cool. 😃
Terrible? Nah. It’s a stylized look, especially on wider shots. But yeah tighter shots are what it’s really designed for and with those you don’t see the focus vignette. For me this is a cool option for shooting static stuff, like for example interviews.
Sorry, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. To my eyes the footage looks really bad. It’s all subjective of course.
@@iphoneographersNot sure if it's because this is sponsored but are you blind?
Look at 1:08/1:18 even just look the edge around the white high contrast areas, it's blue/green. Halation at 4:40 it's evident. Overral the image looks like has applied a zoom blur with a mask vignette, the edges are terrible.
This honestly doesn't look that good. I think it's a waste of money.
i felt the same
Tons of chromatic aberration .
waste of money
Looks terrible
