- This is a 91 ATK406 that had been sitting unused in the weather here in Arizona. I changed the oil and ran a hone in the cylinder(just to clean off some surface rust). Cleaned the carb, added a new chain, did some rust removal from the nickel plated frame and started it up on about the third kick.
Since then I've been out raping it in the desert.
This is kind of a boring yet crazy rocky high speed ride showing the very capable suspension. Just pause the video at almost any time to see the rocky terrain I was riding in. It also doesn't really give that great of elevation change view.
The bike is really amazing. I rode the day before this on about a 40 mile ride out in to the real back country. This bike will climb anything you aim it at. I will have video up soon of these rides. Didn't have my helmet mount till now. Bummer cause it was impressive .
Nice bike. 400cc is one of the best two stroke engine. I have 440 mxc engine in 2020 exc frame. Its like combination of 250 and 500. Very nice bikes.
I have owned most of the big bore two strokes, the KX, the CR,KTM, YZ,RM, Greeves, and the ATK 406 is the king. Not by pure power, but handling and easy to use power. It was my favorite vintage race bike as well
I too like it. Would be happy to buy one but here in Finland we have no ATK bikes at all. 400cc bikes are one of the best two strokes. I have ktm 440 mxc engine in 2020 exc frame. 400cc is compromize beetween 250 and 500cc bike. It still revs high and power is more easy to use than 500cc.
Well I have had a few large bore bikes and without a doubt the YZ490 is the power master. This bike is the torque monster. I rode up a hill in third gear that was about a 70 degree angle. It is an awesome motor. And the suspension is killer.
I pity the foo who owns a YZ490.
I had one, worst bike I ever owned.
In spite of the archaic engine, the ATK 406 is a work of art. IMHO
Like comparing apples and oranges.
I Respect the AtK machines but Let's get Real, an 84 and up a Honda CR 250 whould do Circles around thees Atk bikes ( Regardless of what displacement and year the ATK Was because I've witnessed it !
Oh yeah he's really getting it. I'm smoking on my 250
Thank you very much, very unique and powerful bike any one that puts this video down is just another keyboard jokey, and there are a lot of them lately!!!! GOOD JOB!!!!
THANK'S from NOR-CAL!!!!
Atk has a 620 7
i used to have one !!!! great bike all around
Sounds great 👍🏻
Really appreciate you taking time to post this footage. I'm am almost done with a ground-up rebuild of a 94 406 for the purpose of age-class desert racing and some play riding. Finding footage of what I can expect power-wise is difficult to say the least. Many of the post here on y/t are boneheads doing donuts or otherwise not getting anywhere near the apparent formidable powerband. Most of the magazine test I have read ( And I think I've read them all) put the hp at right at 40 at around 6500 rpm. All new bearings, bore, piston, crank, reeds and on and on!
I miss these old giants, the new big 4 strokes just dont do it for me, always wanted an atk, but I had to settle for a husaberg 501, then a maico 700, and wound up with an rm 490. Too bad they never got the exposure they deserved these relics
Chaz Thornsberry where is the 700???
Kind of flat and featureless but kinda cool too. I see the possibilities. Ride on. . .
It looks flat but its not and very rocky. gopro doesn't show all the detail very well unless you pause it. Plus its Arizona its a desert.
It looks cool, I really like the ATK also. Nice ride.
@@ynotdrappehs7440 Is that out by lake Pleasant?
That thing's hauling ass!
The old Rotax sounds great.
"Ripping through the desert" first 5 minutes riding in parking lot and on the road
ah man...she needs tuned somethin bad
Those are six speed transmissions, a gear for every condition!
Damn man let the clutch out ur just riding the shit out that thing I don’t understand!!!!????
Click bait at its finest where is the ripping through the desert part!!?????
Aaron Troutman 6:20 I guess
I had literally just put the bike back together. The clutch was slipping and the suspension needs rebuilt. It had been sitting in some guys back yard for seven years. Lucky it was doing as well as it was. It's super rocky where I was riding. If you pause the video at any point you can see the boulders.
“Boulders”
Shifts into third going 5 km/h uphill HAHAHA Learn how to ride!
I did that because of the soil, also it being a freshly cut road. I was trying not to dig a trench, which I could have very easily done. Also shows the torque of the Rotax climbing abilities. Oh trust me I know how to ride.
It's not a 125, they actually have a bottom end.
U sound like another keyboard jokey buy a bike and learn to ride your self that bike idles at 60mph!!!!!
Whoever voted this down should be explored by Jeffrey Epsteirn...
haha oh ya man thanks for the ride along ...you really get floating
Where you at? I just got my 406 going again, I'm down by Fort Huachuca.
