I do "eye-ball" the proportions. Sometimes I'm "off" on them but usually it works for me. As for Photoshop, I realize many people don't have it. It is getting more and more expensive to subscribe to. But they make a Photoshop Essentials that is much cheaper and does many of the same things. It may be worth a try if you ever wanted to layer images together like I've done here. Also you could try out Canva. You can get it for the computer desktop or for a tablet and use the free version (though they will constantly try to get you to pay for the upgraded subscription version... you never have to unless you want it). Most of what I did in this video can be done on Canva. I hope that helps.
