  • Charles Kuralt tells the story of the homecoming of 9 children of Alex and Mary Chandler for parents' 50th wedding anniversary and Thanksgiving in 1978. The family remembers the old sharecropper's cabin and lifestyle. From humble beginnings, now all 9 children are college grads.

This story first aired Thanksgiving Day 1978. I was a young reporter in Nebraska and saw it on the CBS Evening News broadcast that night. It was then and I beleive still remains, one of the finest broadcast news pieces ever. It shows the potential (lost unfortunately now) of television to share stories of real people and through them, to learn about each other.

If hard work were all it took, then the richest people in America would be the people who work two minimum-wage jobs with no fringe benefits like paid vacation and health care. There's much more to it, but as long as the wealthiest Americans rig the political system in their favor, nothing will change.

If it weren't for youtube, I wouldn't be able to see Charles Kuralt's TV clips. This shows how you can do positive things with television, not the negative stuff on the news. I wish the media would give more attention to the people that actually make things work.

@phantomsuccour -- I do indeed hold two of the more than 37 degrees represented. However, most important to me is the legacy of faith that my grandparents instilled in us. Without God and His Son Jesus Christ, all those other things mean nothing to me. Thank you all for the kind comments and support of our family.

Heard this uplifting and moving story on Pastor Chuck Swindoll's sermon today 7/12/2020. It's obvious those who have Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, have forgiveness and love in their hearts, and with NO bitterness in them against others who did them wrong. God bless the Chandler family and all its desendents. The athiest's, Liberals and their media friends are trying their best to undermine the family institution, and replaced it with a godless form of govt, where collective shaming and blaming is their new norm to keep the ignorant populace supporting them. But our good Lord Jesus Christ is in control.

I can say without eqivocation, this is one of the finest reports by one of the finest reporters ever to work in broadcasting. If you're involved in this industry, soak this story in. It's not only a great story...but it's a great telling. Thanks again.

Every Thanksgivingtime I watch this story from "On The Road" series of Kuralt -- and every time I watch it, I shed a tear. What an awesome story of perseverance, faith and love. I served in ministry several years and composed many prayers but none were ever as poignant as Mr. Chandler's blessing giving thanks to God "for your love and for your Son." Kuralt had quite a knack. He said he didn't know if there were any general lessons in the story, then said it was a lesson about the family and about what is possible. Amen. Thank you to the Chandlers and Thanksgiving blessings to all who watch their story now, 40 years later.

I have always felt that certain films and stories were integral to advancing the Civil Rights movement into areas where segregation and bigotry were the norm." To Kill a Mockingbird " and " Lilies of the Field" are examples of great films and Kuralt`s story on the inspirational Chandler family was seen by untold millions and talked about by more. This story helped pave the way for the Huxtables on television which helped pave the way for the Obamas in the White House.

I heard this uplifting and moving story on pastor Chuck Swindoll's sermon today, July 12,2020. As a father and an immigrant who came to this wonderful country with only a few dollars in my pocket. I cried because I totally understand their struggle, but I also cried for this nation as a whole in our current political and social issues.
Usually families who hold on to their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ sticks together, and with no bitterness in their hearts towards others who did them wrong. Forgiveness, faith, hope and love are some of the fruits of the spirit according to the Bible of a true believer.
Athiest's, liberal politicians and their media friends are trying very hard to undermine the family institution because they want the ignorant populace to depend on the govt and not God or their faith, and therefore securing their hold on power. But our good God is in control, and the ending to this story of our struggles against GOOD vs EVIL has already been written. God is good!✝️🇺🇸

This is so my family story for several generations minus the share cropping. When you put God first, and are reared by a strong loving mother and father who instill good morals and values in their family anything is possible. The children all had a sense of familal responsibility and looked out for each other. I love seeing this. I wish more of the youth know what our ancestors weren't through to provide and thrive.

An American story of a true American family. THIS is the REAL story of America and the American dream. Of all the stories that should be made into a movie, this one stands out: no supervillains, no superheroes - just real American heroes and the journey a wonderful and incredible family. A portrayal of American history.
