Hello, I'm Alison Sharpe and I'll be a gastroenterologist here at Norton. I went into gastroenterology because I liked the mix of procedures but also the longterm relationships that you can establish with patients. There's a lot of variety within gastroenterology. You have pretty sick patients, you have patients with non-life threatening issues that really affect their quality of life, lots of inpatient patients to see, lots of outpatients with different issues in a different set of problems to be addressed.
Gastroenterology is commonly known for being the doctors who do colonoscopies, but beyond that we also deal with issues with the esophagus, the stomach, the small intestine, and the liver. Some of the problems that we frequently help people with are heartburn and reflux, trouble swallowing, nausea, vomiting, and liver disease.
I am a native Kentuckian. I'm originally from Bowling Green and I've lived in Kentucky most of my life but went away to medical school in Florida. Then I did my internal medicine residency training at the university of Louisville, fellowship training in East Tennessee, and came back to Louisville to practice because I loved the city of Louisville. There's really a wide variety of pathology within the city, so you get a lot of interesting cases and lots of interesting patients.
My patient care philosophy is twofold. On one hand, I want to treat patients the way I would want myself or my family to be treated. I think with a delicate situation like gastroenterology, sometimes the best way is humor, and to make a patient feel comfortable about saying things if they don't know the correct medical terms, it's okay to use common terms to describe problems that they're having. The second is that I like to give patients the support and the confidence and the knowledge to feel empowered to be active participants in their own healthcare.
I'm a huge college sports fan. I love basketball, and football as well. I like to travel and I like to try all the new restaurants in the city of Louisville.
Do u deal with SIBO? Dr Allison Sharpe.
