What exactly is a partition? I've noticed that when you get drives with large memories, they fail when you have saved about 1/3 of the storage capacity? Some one told me it's better to buy Solid Disk Drives instead of external disk drives.

A partition is basically a slice of of the hard drive, kinda like a slice of pie. honestly, I have never a mechanical hard drive (external or internal) fail when only at 33% capacity. Solid state drives (rather internal or external) are nice because they are fast, but they do have a flaw. When they die, usually (not always) that data stored on SSD is immediately and completely lost forever. No data recovery is possible. Whereas, mechanical drives store the information on the platter (that the physical component of the mech. drive where data is actually stored) magnetically. If a mech drive fails, there is always the possibly of data recovery. ofcourse, level 3 data recovery is ungawdly expensive as it involve a clean room, and the mech drive carefully being disassembled -- and usually the starting cost for that type of service is near $2000 USD.

About how much is a good price for a 5 TB drive which does not want to open my photos. I have lots of photos, and I tried using different cables, but the drive won't make any noise or open.

currently, the replacement cost of a new 5TB external hard drive is approximately $100-$135 USD. It is possible that the external hard drive you have is still good. using its original cord, plug into your computer (assuming it is USB powered) and hold it in your hand. if you can feel the vibrations of the hard drive spinning, then it is possible the drive is good, and the controller is bad. IF that is the case, then it is possible the files are intact.
The next step is going to be about how comfortable you feel about destroying an external drive without destroying the external drive. So if you would rather mail it to me for me to do, I would be glad to do that. Address is in the video, then if I am successful its a $40 service fee, plus the cost of the new external drive, plus shipping.
If you want to do yourself, carefully break open the case around the external drive. sometimes there are screws, sometimes the case is just clipped together. Again, be cautious. Once the case is removed, you should be to disconnect the controller from the drive. 96% of the time, the hard drive is a sata drive. Then if you know how to connect the drive to your computer internally via sata cable and power cord, plug it in and see what you get. Again, you can hold the drive to feel if it is spinning. if it is fully intact, your computer should recognize the drive and either display the content or ask you want you want to do - file explorer. if that work, use drive as a data drive, or copy files to your computer.
don't forget to use Crystal Disk Mark to check your drive health. I uploaded a recent vid on how to do that.
Good Luck and keep me informed. And if you are sending it my way, definitely let me know so I can watch for it.
