Those are great ways to add diversity to your workout.. And, of course, you should always push yourself {within reason} to do better than you did last week. Whether it's heavier weight, an extra set, or even an extra rep... ALWAYS LOOK TO IMPROVE!!.. That's how you make gains, baby... Stay hungry.
I screwed my back up in the military so any exercises with free weights like the dead lift are a cause of concern for me. Is there something else I can do as a replacement that will still do the job without the risk of aggravating an old injury?

If you pushed yourself to the limit until you could no longer do any reps, you did it right and did not waste your time at all. Actually, no training is wasted time, since you can always have some improvements, even if you didn't push your limits. Just keep in mind that it will take weeks until you'll start to notice growth.

Though the movement is the same for both......both are way different. People swear by one or the other. It's still a bread and butter exercise some people like to dismiss.
Deadlift focuses mostly on the lower back if done correctly as shown in the vid. It also incorporates a bit of the legs. A great workout for incorporating large muscle groups

I have almost similar strength levels as these guys and im natty. im 6'5'' 205lbs and i can do everything they do in this video.. maybe not 180kgx4 in the deadlift but maybe 160kgx4. However im better at chinups than them. Also in the chestday video i do very similar weight.

if i go further than 170 my max at DL , i cant prefform pull ups so i start with pull ups then DL , after that all other exers.

Deadlifts mostly work your hamstrings and lower/mid back. So its good to get a thicker back. It also works your traps and forearms secondarily.
