A Glimpse on Behag raga.

Our next raga is raga Behag.
This behag raga has been adopted into the Carnatic music from Hindustani music. According to Carnatic music Behag is considered as a Janyam of Shankarabharanam raga which is the 29th Melakartha ragam. Although it’s a Janyam of shankarabharanam it has both shudha Madhyamam (M1)and prati madhyamam (M2)in its Avarohanam.
When we take look at the Arohanam and Avarohanam of this Raga there are different versions. Now I shall sing the Arohanam and Avaroham as taught to me by my Guru.
When I sang the Arohanam and avarohanam just now you would have noticed that the swaras in the Arohanam and Avarohanam do not go straight they are in a zig-zag fashion which is known as Vakram in Carnatic music for eg Sgm pndn and snd pmgmg. Furthermore, this raga has some foreign notes aka Anya swarams so it is Bhashanga Raga too.
We will not be able to identify this Raga just based on the swarams in its Arohanam and avarohanam. This raga can be identified only from its beautiful signature phrases. For eg DPMGMGRS the GMG when sung will help us identify this raga or the phrase NDNS also helps us to identify this raga. It is also said that Ragam Khamas has its influence on this Raga.
When we say Carnatic compositions undeniably, we shall be mentioning about the Musical Trinity but unfortunately they have not done any composition in this raga. The reason being that Behag had its advent into Carnatic music from Hindustani much after their time period.
Ok this Raga became much popular because of Gopalakrishna Bharathi sir. He has done several compositions in this Raga of which Aadum Chidambaramo is a popular Krithi. Apart from this the other compositions would be Araunachala kavirayar’s Kandein Kandein ,Vanajaksha Varnam,Narayanthe namo namo tune set by Dr Balamuralikrishna,Andal thirupavai Oruthi Maganai pirandhu set in Behag Raga by Ariyakudi ramanujar,Saaramaina krithi by Swathi Thirunal,Muruganin maru peyar Azhagu written and set to Behag by Guru Surajananda.
This Raga has found its use not only in Krithis but also in Thillanas, Javalis, and this a very apt Raga for Ragam Tanam Pallavi(RTP). So, you are definitely bound to hear this Raga in the RTP section during Kaccheris.
You will find a long list of behag based film songs in Wikipedia. Today I am not gonna talk about all. I have specifically chosen AR Rehman Sir’s songs based on Behag. To be more precise I am gonna talk about 3 of his songs. Reason being that Behag has been used in these 3 songs to bring out different flavors. He has beautifully done this by using different phrases of Behag in each song to emote different flavours. On the list first we have SUTTUM VIZHI SUDAR THAAN KANNAMA in Ghazal style which coincidentally has been sung by our ghazal pundit Hariharan Ji. 2nd would be MUTHAL MURAI KILLI PAARTHEIN which is love theme-based song. 3rd one would be MALARGAL KETTEIN an authentic traditional classical number. So ARR has shown 3 varied flavours through the usage of Behag in his songs.
The best time to sing this Raga would be between 9pm to 12am.
This impact of this raga on the listeners is such that it can help people with Insomnia to get into deep sonorous sleep. Plus this Raga has a calming ,enchanting and soothing effect on our minds.
