  • I recently picked this 1971 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon up as part of a package deal from another car guy. Story is it came from New Mexico and had a 1968 455 Rocket Engine in it and was parked many years ago. After seeing that the engine bay is incomplete lets see if we can get the big block to breathe fire once again. This car has been SOLD!! As always, thanks for watching!

I worked the parts counter of an Olds and IH Dealership in the 70s. These were pretty classy Wagons in the day. I knew of a couple of guys that had to give up their cool Muscle Cars when they had a few kids and this was a fairly cool looking option for them. I think you could order them with a 455 in 72 but most had 350s.

Vista is Spanish for "view". So, with all those windows, you always had a great view while you were cruising maybe? We had a 72 Plymouth station wagon when I was growing up. What a dog of a car. Always was breaking down. Dad was always working on it. My mom once asked our mechanic if he minded that my dad worked on the car. He said no because it meant he would be getting it soon to work on. True story.

At first I thought it was not going to even start , but I know that you can start just about anything , and you proved that with a cough and a backfire . The initial run down was not promising but some new parts solved the problems . the burnouts at the end of the video were great , especially the light show from the carb , no extra illumination needed Thanks for the monolog your wit is still sharp like a pointy stick . A 68' 455 is a very good motor to build. Torque galore. Look at the heads and see which ones they are. Could be any number of heads...C,D,F,J. Some are quite valuable. Typically J heads are referred to as Junk though. The letter is on left hand lower corner of head.

Great episode! The issue I personally had with "uni-points" was always quality of manufacturing. They worked ok when they worked. Sadly, if they were bad out of the box you couldn't return them.. Soooo better to go with individual parts - odds are good they won't all be bad.

Can't wait for the black Dodge D-10]0 SWB video. I had a yellow '75 Adventurer as a daily driver with a 400 HP small block as a daily driver for about 5 years.
    LOVED IT!!!
Gave to my Wife as her driver when we first got married.
She put it in reverse at high idle with het foot on the brake and BAM!!! Blew reverse out of the 727.
Took it to my transmission guy and got it fixed. When I picked it up he said. "YOU LET YOUR WIFE DRIVE THAT THING!"
Pulled the engine, put in a stock 318 and sold it to a friend.....man I miss it. Straight as an arrow and ZERO RUST.
Put the engine in the same thing exvpt 4WD with military 1 1/4 ton Dodge 4:09/4:10 axles nd made it a mud truck.
That engine SINGS and got 14 mpg in the 2wd.

I Love the Olds Vista Cruiser! It was the Cutlass Wagon! I think those cars are super cool. If you remember in Family Vacation, One of these was traded in for the BIG UGLY Family Truckster wagon. When they tried to back out they Crushed the Vista Cruiser. That was a criminal act in my book. Love the windows in the roof! With the woodgrain faded completely white and the top faded to Tennessee Orange, it gives it a two tone color scheme that I could really dig! Yes that is a Step in the Bumper for little kids to get into the sideways or rear facing seats in the very back.

    I was 5 yrs old .
My dad bought an Impala wagon & my uncle bought the Buick V. C. wagon...
Years later I took the 327 out of the Impala , rebuilt it & dropped it in a Camaro . (I think)
Might've put it in my 73 Chevelle ...
But , the Buick was loaded with a.c. , power windows, seats , ect & my dads Impala had an a.m. radio . Thats it .
My dad , who is 85 now , never bough a car with a.c. til I was a senior in H.S.

Oldsmobile named those Vista Cruisers because of the roof windows. I had a ‘79 Custom Cruiser when I was broke in grad school. It had one of those 261 diesels that were based on the gasoline engines. They were so bad that Oldsmobile replaced mine with the V-6 at over 100K miles at no charge. I decided I’d keep driving it until it died even though my wife wouldn’t ride in it. I had 400K on it when it was stolen, parked between my wife’s Mustang and our neighbor’s Corvette. Three weeks later I got it back. I’d had enough and gave it to an elderly couple that needed a car. Sometimes I miss it. Great video. You didn’t have a lot to work with there.

You were talking about freeze plugs and that they can drill a hole through them and get them out that way. Well many years ago I heard of a new hire at a GM Garage. They had him bring a brand new truck inside in order to install a block heater "one that goes into the freeze plug hole" . He drilled a hole through it and then used what ever he used to pop the plug out.
He got that done and then reinstalled the Antifreeze , he put all back in that he got out but it was still low on coolant. He told the shop manager that he needed more antifreeze so they gave him a gallon.. Well he put that in and still it was not full so he asked for more antifreeze. The shop manger went over and they talked about all of the coolant that had been put into the radiator. The shop manager checked the Engine oil , it was way over full "with antifreeze". The new hire "mechanic" had drilled a hole right through the engine cylinder, all of the antifreeze was running through that hole and into the oil pan.
Yup that was his last day at the GM shop.

Was watching this and was literally shouting come on baby you can’t do it you know you want to you you’re so close. Glad to see someone is taking her home and is going to continue on the work you started. My wife heard you say “ alright for the girls we go out with” and said “what’s that all about?” So had to explain the line to her, and then she said “ he sure likes his sandwiches, he seems to talk about having one all the time” so I had to let her know you were talking about a beer, another great video and both Duff and Mojo played a great part in this video, they both played their parts for comical relief, Duff jumping in the Pontiac and having a good sniff, and Mojo providing his wisdom on those points in his own special Mojo way.

Gotta love the GM banner when it comes to ye Oldsmo-Bubble.. Vista Cruiser's.. are super vista seeing machines..used to ride facing backwards in my youth and throw up on those behind us. 3rd row rear facing seating is a thing of the past.. olden days. another by gone era. A mechanical tip from a 72 year old mechanic. To find top dead center number one cylinder on any V8 engine.
All you have to watch is the fifth cylinder in the firing order and when the intake valve begins to open your at TDC on number one.
    Watch 65721843 intake opening
    Adjust 18436572 both valves
    1:01:50
BTW, GM Unitised points are good. Used them for years.
I'd make the switch to electronic ignition with a Pertronix module 😅😅😅

MY uncles used to say that same thing and "Good Enough For the Girls I Go With" or my favorite "I knew a girl like that.." growing up it was always one liners like that you'd hear around the old timers hanging around as a kid, that's one of the reasons I love watching your videos dude it's always cool to see you doing the same things me and gramps used to do to pass the time during the days,I loved going to his friends yards and seeing old trash trucks and old cars I wish my daughter got to see old stuff like that she's 5 and loves old trucks anything loud like her dad's suburban she loves lol keep it coming dude love the content!

I have had an iguana, boa constrictor, scorpion, black widow spider, and a flying squirrel. I currently have 3 dogs, 4 cats, and 4 fish. I actually had the iguana litter box and leash trained. I actually took her out for walks like a dog, lol. I had her for 13 years, and she about four feet long. The iguana and the boa constrictor didn't even have a cage. They just stayed in the house. The boa constrictor was about six feet long, and feeding time was a big event. I would block the hallway off, throw his dinner in there, and everyone in the neighborhood would come over to watch. I trained him with people from the time he was a hatchling, so anyone could pick him up and carry him around. He actually lives in a petting zoo now, and I still go see him pretty often. I hand trained the scorpion, and I could walk around with him on my shoulder and freak people out. I have trained one of my cats to jump into my arms on command, and jump off the roof of the house on to my shoulder. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. Maybe I am just a weirdo, lol.

In high school, a buddy of mine had a '74 Olds Cutlass 442 with a 350, it was black with gold stripes. He came across a '67 Olds Toronado 425 high compression engine. We rebuilt it, put an aftermarket cam in it, and put it in the 442. Man did that thing roast the tires. You could punch it at almost any speed and the tires would go up.

My grandfather had a 1968 Vista Cruiser wagon he used to haul fire wood for years. Chains on the rear with a set of 235/75/15 on the chrome uni-mags. Fun fact it didn't have a shift interlock and I had to sit in the car when he dropped the tree. Had my first accident in that car at 3 years old!!!

The accessory bracketry on those engines are a headache and a half to mount if one has never seen them all in place. Pontiacs were just as bad with their bracketry.
