In Germany we grew up to love Greek food. Making Gyros at home, close to impossible, even if one can buy some spice mixes. But here we are with the perfect preparation. This has to be the coolest and most ingenious trick to create the perfect Gyros at home, including that fantastic marinade making it so orginal, without any spice-mix but Greek home-cooking. Again, Akis, you are a wonderful and inspiring chef. And my Gyros -loving/devouring wife is eternally grateful. Thanks!!!!!!
We just cooked Gyros this afternoon, the tzatziki sauce, the pita bread, everything!. My family loved it!! The meat had so much flavour, and it was very soft and tender, the pita bread was absolutely a hit. We had never tried Greek food before and we loved it!. Just a little tip of how I cook gyros and kebabs. Roll the marinated meat into a giant sausage inside cling film and aluminium foil and freeze it. Cut the meat from frozen and fry until cooked. I don't know why, but I find it gives the meat the same texture as streetfood style gyros.
After spending 5 years in Thessaloniki, I've been spoiled. Can never find good gyros in the states. After seeing this, my mouth not only watered, but I nearly cried. I must try this at home! Ευχαριστώ πολύ!!
This was delicious! Marinated overnight, used Balsamic vinegar cuz didn’t have white wine vinegar, and Grey Poupon mustard Homemade Greek yogurt for the Tzatziki sauce, and Turkish red sauce with Aleppo red pepper Wish I had put some white wine in the bottom of the pan to catch drippings but would have made the potato base collapse Used an Israeli recipe for the pita cuz it puffs so well Definitely not Kosher to put pork in it though😂 Excellent, thank you!

Thanks for this recipe. Tried this today and it turned out well. This wooden spits with the potato base is just genious if you don‘t have something else to hold everything in place. I will try this again but with some rosmary and maybe thyme.

Obviously a lot of the spices and other flavors are different, but every Mexican in the world knows this as "al pastor", which is one of the absolute most popular type of tacos of all time! Mexicans everywhere are, I'm certain, grateful for this wonderfully delicious cultural contribution :) Ingenious cooking method, by the way. I'm not buying a vertical spit, so if I ever want to make pork gyros (or al pastor!) at home, I'm going to remember this!

I was talking with my family about your previous recipe for pork gyros and was going to send the recipe to my sister in law. So I came on UA-cam to send the link and found this new recipe!. Bravo it looks incredible. However my American in laws had never tried traditional Greek gyro and I have. Your previous recipe and method has been a staple for me and I wanted them to try it but I loved your new stacking method. However my problem was that the previous recipe was for 400g of meat and the new one 2kg of meat. So I didn’t want the powerful flavours of rosemary and oregano to overpower the meat. As this method called for the meat to be cooked as a whole so I just doubled the amounts of your previous recipe. It worked out very well, but I’d like to ask you ..using the ingredients of your previous recipe for pork gyros what would be your amounts for the indgredients of your first recipe to 2kg of pork? I hope that made sense in order to use the stacking method. However all that aside, my family has tried your first recipe ingredients in your second recipe method and they were highly impressed….
