@@Jerry11201 crash had to happen. whether or not it was an actual event that we've all been told about isn't consequential. had to happen. knowing that it is one of the reasons he will be around for an 81st birthday in a few days makes me feel especially happy for those closest to him. and grateful.
He was doing heroin, speed (amphetamines, benzadryne, etc), weed, cocaine, acid - *CONSTANTLY* by all accounts at the time. He would literally go without sleep for *two weeks* sometimes, his speed use was so intense. It's why you always see him rubbing his eyes in the clips from the '66 tour - he was completely out of his mind on drugs and no sleep. The motorcycle crash probably saved his life. Nobody can go at that pace forever - not even when you're young.
That was one the reasons that make him go away from the touring, in 1966. Apart from the amount of stress, Dylan was permanently stoned out of his brain. Whatever the drug he was into, cause iv'e read that was on different drugs (hash, speed and even sniffin heroin), it was the way of life that he was fed up with, no sleep at all and dealing with reporters and hostiles vibes from the public. The motorcycle accident maybe was a setup, maybe happened, we never know, but iv'e read once (and saw it in a tv documentary) that while he was recluded in Woodstock, watched the whole the D.A. Penneabaker footage of that british tour, and have a deep impact watching himself in that frame of mind all the time.
thank god he survived this drug phase...he keeps laughing after everthing he says like in the john lennon car scene...ahhh...poor baby....thank god he took a break for awhile.....if he kept going on like this, he might not had made it through the 60's....i guess u got to give it up to sara dylan
They do such a great job with this in the movie. I mean, this performance of Visions of Johanna is so beautiful, it's crosses beyond human into the angelic. What a strange dark thing selling one's soul for their craft is. Such beauty for such unspeakable sacrifice. Makes me shudder.
I think the reason why the ‘66 tour was such a hard time for him is not only due to drugs or lack of sleep, I do think it was the way he was looking at the world, he was pushing too hard with his surrealism and his creativity process in general, I mean for an artist this can be pretty painful. The accident of August ‘66 brought him back to earth.
I think he faked the motorcycle crash to get out of Albert's iron touring schedule grip. He mentions purposefully quitting many times on the 65 and 66 tours. They had a US tour booked for fall 66'.
@@johnthemachine yes though the evidence is that a crash happened but not as severe as some thought. Dylan made good use of it though: John Wesley Harding, Basement Tapes, marital bliss...
I think for some of the musicians it is a part of their image and identity so they are discouraged from stopping because every town they go people want to "party" with them and maybe for the fans it was just an occasional thing but they don't care what that does to a body or soul being expected to do it regularly for years just to satisfy the publics expectation of them. After all lots of people figure musicians are only in it for the "rock star" lifestyle booze and babes etc.
@@johnthemachine I think he faked it too. It happens. Steve McQueen faked a car crash and whiplash to get out of his Wanted Dead or Alive contract so he could film The Magnificent Seven.
Going from singing “pawn in their game” in that field to singing a song like Visions of Johanna with that sort of grotesque style is such an insane transformation.
Bob Dylan has always been a master when it comes to dealing with the media. It's easier to turn off a Bob Dylan interview because, he will kill the press with boredom. It's all about the music.
If he's so tired: Why not just stop? He's done a lot. It is great. No one forces him. Everybody knows, he's a great artist. No-one is so big they could not rest enough!
Jutta Muntau I think a contract forces him. Usually manager signs a contract with a list of the shows: how many, where and when, pays for music halls, for advertising, media etc. Maybe a year later you know that already, then I’m sorry, but yeah, tour it’s basically a job with a contract. So in the beginning you would think “nah, it’s not that much”, but then it can happen that it is actually pretty damn much and if you just stop you lose money. And you don’t always want to lose money you’ve spent.
I always felt he was referencing Patsy Cline’s death with that comment of crashing in a private airplane in the mountains of Tennessee, seeing as that’s how she died 3 years earlier.
He actually did get a new Bob Dylan. After the motorcycle crash less that two months after this tour ended, he looked different and sounded different. And in many ways wrote quite different. Always be careful what you wish for.
+Francis White haha no worries I do that all the time! Mee toooo.. I think I'll just watch his screen test for Andy Warhol untill something comes out lol try that haha
He's right about those private planes. I don't know why these guys put up with the contracts they are given. Ok, if you're a nobody you have to do what they want, but if you're Bob Dylan I would think you can dictate terms. Maybe they rope you in to a six year deal when you're 19 or something. Still, I would think Dylan would be too smart to go for it.
@EllyMcCormack I don't think this is at Manchester. Pennebaker wasn't at that show, and there was only one camera, which was on a balcony, at least for the electric half. I think this might be Newcastle.
@johnthemachine I SO AGREE!!! If we could find out who filmed the concert here, then someone could contact him if he's still alive or someone who knows him and knows how to get hold of the recording and ask to put it up here or something.
Oh :-( It’s a gift for the audience and the managers and this music will always remain but it must have been so hard sometimes indeed. A mixture of excitement and exhaustion.😶

Want is complex- I want to go home- then go home. But then he will lose other things he wants, fame, fortune, ect.. Celebrities always want to be able to just go out to dinner like everyone else. Even if he hadn't his place in history was already secure, the same way Jimi Hendrix's is after just 3 or 4 years as a star.
