When I first saw this it definitely creeped out teenage me. I thought about all the civilians & kids. Imagine growing up on Enterprise D. You'd have a lot of crazy things almost kill you a lot!
Mrs Jen....you keep saying Space madness n I HAAAVVEEE to ask if you're referring to Ren&Stimpy "space madness"😅cuz if you Are...that is heeeeelarious.
Yeah, it is definitely up there. The clicking in the holodeck, if you recall the scene I'm talking about in a later episode, is one of the most terrifying scenes for me.
This might be one of the episodes where someone on TOR's rewatches of episodes commented: "You know, without Data, the entire crew would be dead. A lot."
It's actually a good supporting argument for when that guy wanted to take Data apart so that every starship could have a Data on board. Every spaceship SHOULD have an android of some sort to help run the ship. (Or at least a good one, like Data)
seriously? Violations one the one that truly traumatised me. Beverley and Jean-Luc seemingly floating down the corridor to see Jack Crusher's body, suddenly Jack is Jev, he opens his eyes, Beverley screams and turns to Jean-Luc, who is also now Jev... NOPE
Very unsettling episode, and it sticks with you. I first saw this episode when I was a little kid, and I tell ya, I have never forgotten how important REM sleep is. 😂
As a person with a sleep disorder, I know firsthand how debilitating sleep deprivation can be. Watching these characters being forgetful, irritable, depressed, unfocused, looked really familiar to me lol.
I think it's funny how everybody notices how Data and Deanna aren't affected, but no one realizes Guinan wasn't affected either. Anyway, loved the review, love you, take care and stay safe ❤️
I actually kind of like that they never got into the details of her species. We know she’s old, smart, hates the Borg, and Q isn’t a fan, that’s about it. She apparently has a great deal of mental toughness since she didn’t crack up in this episode, but it’s not treated like a “power”.
@@kingleech16 It get that. It is interesting to have a character that's only 'sketched in', upon which we can project our own concepts of long life, ancient wisdom, inscrutable peace and comfortable friendship. Having the show fill in more canonical details about her would have felt... 'limiting', somehow.
Yeah, pretty creepy, helped by some unsettling music. Guinan laying down the law was kind of a nod to a Western trope where the saloon owner/barperson would whip out a shotgun to stop a barfight (which were obviously hella expensive for the saloon owner cuz everything gets broken :).
I liked Data and Troi looking through the inventory - figuring out the other ship was asking FOR something vs. what they have - then instead of a long sentence simply going with "NOW". Kind of a Halloween type episode
This is one of my all-time favorite Trek episodes purely for the creep factor. The music, especially, really works well with the mysterious atmosphere.
I mean, I get that it's creepy, but the episode that TRAUMATISED me, aged 13, was in the next season, and I don't know why people have seemed to have forgotten it
I never remembered this as a bad episode, but I guess in the season 4 shuffle, I had forgotten how *good* this one was. It's a rather perfect Star Trek episode as there was no villain, but a lot of tension, and the crisis is resolved by communication and cooperation.
I don't know how the 80's audience thought about it, but nowadays - with all the research into neurological, mental, and other kinds of illnesses - people are far more likely to know that this episode's progression is quite grounded, and very, very real (even if the situation that created it is fantastical). And that just makes it even scarier, even if you've not had first-hand experience with it in some form, which heightens the impact of the story.
Interesting Trek series crossover event as the young Asian Ensign Lind that Riker had take control of the Conn. Was actually one of the kids in the TOS episode "And the Children Shall Lead."
How fortunate is the Enterprise to have such a dream team of talented and unique individuals? They have the ONLY android in Starfleet, they have the only Klingon, they have an empath / telepath... they never got around to really using Geordi's unique vision, plus all of the other brilliant engineers, medical staffers, command personnel. They have it all!
"Eyes in the dark... one moon circles..." pops into my head randomly and gets stuck there sometimes. Creepy AF. A genuinely scary episode. Gave me friggin' nightmares as a kid.
oh an eerie episode indeed 😳 , i do enjoy Horror so i recall this episode very vividly and i like it when the cast acts outside of their characters , so to see them all act so worn and vulnerable was interesting . Happy Sunday Jen and the TNG Chat crew . 😃 🖖
now that's my TNG! love this episode! watching you reacting to it proves that it still holds up and that you are ready for Twin Peaks! the mysteries and ambiance awaits! awesome video!
Lanei Chapman played the Ensign you see at the beginning. She starred in a few movies, my favorite being "Rat Race!" Definitely worth watching! Every ship should have a Data but as "Measure Of A Man" explored, that's a whole new race.
I was wondering why the Brattain had such a small crew (about 34 if my memory is correct). I bet the original script had it as a tiny Oberth class science vessel.
I guess it depends on what their mission was... There was that supply ship, Lantree, that had a crew of 26 and was the same class. I suppose you don't need a lot of people to be "Space Amazon" delivery
That beloved 4th season continues. That Conspiracy show, in the 1st season, being my favorite episode was becoming more hard to remember after this show. Dr Crusher's scene was the best!!
Troi (and Data) to the rescue! I was waiting for Jen to react to this episode. Forcing her to show love to Troi and give her flowers 😂 We know Jen has been hard on her in the past 😉😂
Good thing the Enterprise is a deep space exploration vessel. With all the scienceing they do, they had a wide assortment of elements on board. Granted hydrogen is one of the most basic, but it's good to have a wide range of options.
I love horror, so I enjoyed this episode as a kid. X) You'd think this was a Halloween episode, but no, it aired in the spring time. It's always been one of my favorite episodes. :D Loved your reaction, Lt. Jen! You had your blankie at the ready, set for shielding. :)))
4 seasons in and you still sing along to the opening theme....it's GREAT!! I love it! This one was VERY scary watching it live way back in the day. It's fun to re-watch them with you. Commercial break!
I love your reactions, Jen. You seem like a really good person and it's always a pleasure to see you react to Star Trek episodes. Also, you're a fellow Canadian if I'm not mistaken.
I can just imagine how the conversation would go if they ever met the crew of the other ship.... TROI: Why were you being so enigmatic? Why didn't you just say something simple, like.... "Help. We need hydrogen." ALIEN: One moon circles. TROI: Yes, I know.... hydrogen. But why be so mysterious about it? ALIEN: Eyes in the dark. TROI: You see, that's what I'm talking about. What does that even mean? ALIEN: See the eyes in the dark. TROI: What? ALIEN: One moon circles. TROI: Why are you doing this? ALIEN: Eyes in the dark. TROI: You know what.... never-mind!
Thanks Jen, I’m not creeped out by this episode. Dreaming, directed dreaming, lucid dreaming, I find it all fascinating. I jumped in the Way Back machine last night, in fact. Dreamed I was in 1968 in a brew house watching the Beatles play on stage. I happened to look in a mirror, and I was a teenager and had long hair. Anything is possible in lucid dreams, but that’s the first time I’ve made it back to ‘68! 😂
It was also an incredibly brave thing for any TV show to portray at the time: A _man_ openly admitting he is terrified in a world where that isn't considered acceptable.
This was always one of my favorite episodes. I especially like when the Betazoid guy tells Troi "eyes in the dark." That was such a great reveal, and Marina's reaction is really cool to watch.
Jen for what it's worth, this is probably the second-most creepy TNG episode. You'll know (probably) when you get to the creepiest :) I'm glad that they're not ALL like this, but also I like that they're not afraid to go here either.
I hope he did. Once the alien ship was freed they would have stopped sending their telepathic messages so they wouldn't be in his head any longer. In the episode we only saw Troi having the dreams but as a full Betazoid he was probably still being affected too. Once it stopped he was hopefully not too far gone to recover.
I love to watch this episode on Halloween as I think this makes for a great Halloween episode... The morgue scene actually makes me laugh because I know that one of those actors is sitting there thinking, "I studied in Julliard for years just so I can sit here on a table with a bag over my head." I can't help but think one of those actors is thinking that and it makes me laugh every time.
There aren't very many horrorish episodes, but the ones they made, they made well. And I'm with you. I always like it when Data winds up in charge, even for a little bit.
6:31 -- RE: The Morgue Scene; Star Trek on the whole doesn't have all that many creepy scenes, but dang, this one takes the first place ribbon for me even though its a fairly standard setup for narratives that involve the undead. The biggest flaw with this episode is that if the alien could speak English enough to say “one moon circling like eyes in the dark”, they could have just as easily said, “Hey we need hydrogen!”
Not necessarily. "Eyes in the dark" could simply be the closest their language can come to an English interpretation. When Marco Polo first saw monkeys, he described them as "men with tails" because he had never seen a monkey before and no term had yet been invented for the animal. He only knew they somewhat resembled humans and they had tails, so "men with tails" was the best he could do at the time.
Some pretty creepy scenes in this episode and i wonder what else Guinan is hiding behind the bar.......maybe it's better not to ask. Loved the heroic music on Data at the end.
Fun fact: The actors hated this episode, especially Marina Siritis. She didn't like being strung up in ropes doing the dream sequences. I loved it though!
This is one of the few episodes Deanna Troi is doing something useful with her abilities and figures the solution out. I would have loved to have her as the hero in the endscene. Nothing against Data, but this was not a Data episode - it was a Troi episode.
I think this is the only episode of Star Trek that actually made me scared (it was Crusher's morgue scene). It didn't give me nightmares, but I did have trouble falling asleep that night. I backed myself against the wall so I could be sure nothing was behind me. Eyes (eyes). In the dark (dark). One moon...
I INTENTIONALLY avoid blood-&-guts Horror movies, for fear of getting nightmares; but I LOVE psychological thrillers (like “Silence of the Lambs” or “The Sixth Sense”), & this episode DEFINITELY Falls into that category!

The morgue scene is one of the most terrifying scenes in Star Trek, it freaked me out as a kid.
All those bodies sitting up sent a shiver down my spine.
That scene *STILL* freaks me out and I'm 44 and am pretty solid through most horror movies.
Same!
Absolutely! No jump scare or scary voice, just silence and the bodies suddenly being upright... This is how you create horror. It still works today.
Yeah, it is definitely up there. The clicking in the holodeck, if you recall the scene I'm talking about in a later episode, is one of the most terrifying scenes for me.
Jen: "I'll get my blanket in case it's too scary."

Seeing Worf so broken that he abandoned his post to commit suicide was shocking. A Klingon warrior afraid to face his fears.
Especially Worf who is the most spiritual Klingon Warrior since Kahless.
