TSSF is like perfect modern pop punk, bordering on easycore which is just heavier pop punk, usually influenced by hardcore. To me they are the standard for how modern pop punk should be done, them and New Found Glory who still manage to put out amazing records after over 20 years
@Dane Gonzalez Easycore is a made up genre coined by NFG because they are massive hardcore fans and use hardcore tropes like downtuned guitars, chugging riffs, breakdowns, and two steps infused with pop-punk sensibilities like catchy melodies and lyrics about girls/adolescence. They weren't really the first to do it but coined the term, popularized the genre, and toured with similar up and coming bands to help raise the profile of the genre. It's not just one instrument, it's the whole structure of songs. Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, Captain Chunk, Abandoned by Bears, etc are all very unique compared to say Blink or MxPx.
@Dane Gonzalez Also yes, NFG still consistently make great music. That's a matter of taste but they still have a significant following that has outlasted the "fall" of pop punk over the 00's and as someone that listens to a ton of different types of music, I find them to still be very enjoyable. Better than most other band's new material that would be their contemporaries like say ADTR and FoB. NFG to me are the undisputed kings of pop punk in the current age and have influenced much of what is considered the pop punk sound today. Pillars of the genre up there with Blink and Green Day.
@Dane Gonzalez Also hate to belabor a point but a subgenre of punk is still punk, just like metal and EDM. Black Metal is metal all the same even though it is unrecognizable from, let's say, AC/DC or Black Sabbath. Similarly, NFG hits harder than the Sex Pistols ever did and yet both can be and are still punk. Sub-genres are fun like that.
@Dane Gonzalez I think that's why subgenres and microgenres generally don't gain as much traction overall, it's usually just splitting hairs at a certain point. I feel though, coming from both hardcore and pop punk, that easycore feels unique to me. Also since both of them are subgenres of punk already, I still feel that classic punk feel. I like getting into subgenres as a better way to nail a sound down for recommendation. I know so many people who enjoy Blink and those styles of punk/pop punk but would not be able to do Bad Religion or NOFX, as well as the opposite sentiment. To me, they are useful for saying okay you like a thing, here is something very similar. Punk as a broad genre goes in a lot of different places and Minor Threat often doesn't work for the Green Day crowd, and visa versa. It's a shame it's so muddied though and the elitism of "true fans" of any genre often gets in the way. Lots of people don't want to consider the Ramones pop punk but they are much more palatable to someone who likes Blink than to someone who likes Black Flag, yet taking away their "true punk" status means something to a lot of people. I wish it were an exact science though to be honest, I just like organization haha
Every person in these react videos refers to an "older style" but when I first heard TSSF, I remember thinking "this is the next evolution of pop punk"
