But I am constantly amazed at how powerful a relatively slow moving, thick slurry of muddy water can be. Shocking! Please keep them coming. Fan in the desert.
Some vidéo as bevore, but tried to have better images. Some comments recuperate from the two first essays : Scha. : From the side it looks like a big drop, but not in total. What is it, like 2 meters? What difference does that wall make? Also, how are you always there at the right time? PEZ It's always a mystery and every torrent has is own mechanic. For Illgraben you have to reach 12mm rain, and an intensity at the end of at last 10mm per hour. I look at radar but when the rain comes from south I add a color more. And I also compare with the pluviometre of the passed hour situated 20 km away in the direction of the coming rainfall. If they show 6mm, it is favorable. When sudden rain, strom, if the intensity is more than 20mm/h it is also good, 40mm/h it is guaranty and if it is 60mm/h, I stay home. When Storm I'm more afraid, also because of the lightnings. PEZ The walls should be 6 - 7 m high. And the one at the end diseapeare almost. Remains 1-2 m. From falling, the energy of the debris flow is reduced. It happens 23 times in Illgraben. More in Chamoson, but they had to rebuild lot of the walls last year. The huge debris flow took them away. Most are big stones walls. The technic is from years 1800, in some torrents they builded steps with wood. Mek. There is a very nice French documentary on UA-cam called "Manival, le mauvais torrent " on the channel "Institut des Risques Majeurs", which is explaining all of that. The documentary is in french but some English subtitles are available from the UA-cam options under the video. M.H. I just don't get it. The last drop off point, how come there's not a pile of rocks hundred feet high, thousands of rocks are going down that path?. Im confused or stupid. I dont know which, maybe both. I guess that the wall is 50cm thick. that would give me a dimension of what falls over there, if I'm about right.

That was something else. It started out looking like a glacier flow, then turned into a mud flow, tons of rock. The logs that went down. Once were trees? Did the rocks bust the limbs off?
This happens with each rain? With all that much dirt/rocks going downstream, the Swiss Alps should be about 50 ft tall by now. And, those huge boulders just seem to float on by. Incredible!!
I've been enjoying these videos, truly a natural wonder. I have a few questions about the dam. What is it's purpose? What would happen if it wasn't there? How does it stand up to the force of the debris flow?
I was asking myself this as well when we were hiking there (very beautiful place by the way) and tried to do some research. It seems that this serves a dual purpose. For one it is supposed to slow the flow of water and the main purpose is to hold back debris so the creek does not erode the valley more.
I do not understand (intuitively) why there is not an accumulation of the large boulders at the base of the dam. If the net stress on each boulder includes a gravitational component, directed straight downward, plus a shear component, directed tangentially in the direction of the water flow (parallel (+/-) to the stream bed) then if you remove the shear component, why does the boulder not simply drop down and remain there? If anyone could refer me to a discussion of this process, I would appreciate it. Thx.
If there is enough water and debris to push a large boulder over the dam, then the same water and debris will continue to move it downstream. If there isn't enough water and debris to move a large boulder downstream, then it wouldn't have been pushed over the dam in the first place.
Awesome videos. But I have a request. Do a past/ present, chronological order of videos, from every angle you have. The trough falls, uphill, down hill, from the side it enters the river, from across the river, upstream, downstream. That would be awesome!
Letzte Mauer war erst vor 5 Jahren gebaut. Habe es gesehen. Soll 1 million kosten. Wurde ab November gebaut, ausser Murensaison. Obwohl eine kleine im 2018 Anfangs Dezember runterging. Mit grosse Kanalisation um Dickes Wasser durchgehen zu lassen während Bau. Tiefgegraben unten 2-3 Meter und geht 3-4 Meter in den Seiten, 2-3 Meter breit Dann wie gewöhnlich Armierung, dick wie Brückenarmierung Einschallung und MegaKubics Beton. Ich habe leider keine Bilder davon gemacht. Ich weiss aber dass einige von den 30 Barriere wieder gebaut müssen. Werde mich dann mehr an Menschen Werk interessieren...Aber Genial da die Energie der Mure beim jeden Mauersprung vorübergehend sinkt. Idee ist aber 150 Jahren alt. Aber sei es der Bauspezialist oder der Hydrologue wird sicher ein bisschen lachen über meine unpräzise Antwort....

Pour le dernier évènement que je n’ai pas vu je décris : Et le 22 05 2021 à 2h du matin….voici le résultat. Puis je montre l’évolution du cône de déjection de l’Illgraben. Enfin je montre le canyon plus haut vers le pont bhoutanais, ainsi qu’un ravin nommé Sagenschleif, et montre l’évolution du chenal au cours de l’année 2020/2021.
Hello, the Rhône is the river where the Illgraben goes. Last some years the Illgraben builded a huge alluvial cône. In October 2020, heavy rain in Gomser Simplon Saas valleys unleashed the waters which grabbed all that in half a day. A women living there is used to say she saw a rock coming down the Illgraben so huge that nobody never saw. And so she was right...6m x 5m x 3m. I don't give a name to it because I didn't saw it coming down.... And who know what is under the Pfynn forest which is on the old alluvial deposit of Illgraben....

Obwohl ich dieses Phänomen sehr gerne beobachte, finde ich die Bilder unwirklich. Es sieht gefälscht aus! Eine solche Lawine würde alles zerstören, was ihr in die Quere kam, selbst wenn sie im Fluss landete. Die Bilder scheinen nicht wahr zu sein, aber es hält unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf sich.
