When I briefly played "Equaliser (yes stupid name!)" it on a friend's c64 back in the day - I thought this was THE Wonder Boy conversion, thus I never bothered getting it for my c64. 😂 Only found out how wrong I was in recent years.
Outlaw really puts the C64 version of Gunsmoke to shame. In fact, the first time I loaded Gumsmoke, I thought it was a joke. I thought someone had taken a magazine type-in game and titled it Gunsmoke, because I had trouble believing that the same company who put out the excellent Commando had made that garbage.
Equalizer is mentioned in the unfairly harsh Zzap! review for Wonder Boy. So it seemingly came out before Activision's conversion, despite almost copy/pasting some of it's graphical assets. Really enjoyed the look at these often rather shameless but sometimes superior clones!
I would point out that Operation Wolf has enemy targets to clear for each level too. Fist Fighter was terrible, even if Commodore Format thought it was done tongue-in-cheek - I featured it in my new book C64 Nightmares. The official conversion of Gun.Smoke is in there too, but Outlaw is quite good.
Ah, I haven't played Op Wolf for years so I forgot that. It was even more of a clone than I thought though. Fist Fighter looked the part but yeah, the gameplay was awful.
I'm glad to see you like Cybernoid clones - hint, hint! 😉 I do have a few of the games you covered, SAS Combat and MIG-29. Not great, but playable for five minutes.

It is probably one of the worst offenders because they got it out before the official conversion. Very naughty!
I believe that disembodied hand in Edd the Duck is supposed to be his nemesis Wilson the Butler
It was
I was going to say the same thing. It's Wilson, also from the broom cupboard.
Thanks guys. I was a little too old when Edd the Duck came along, I was more Gordon the Gopher's era 😂

I've never played it but I've heard it's not good!
Amiga version instead, fugghettaboutit: title tune sound like was made in the pub, "belating" enemies, and an average commando clone at best

I'm glad to hear somebody else thought the official Wonderboy conversion was better than the reviews 🙂 Equalizer deserved any bad press though!
@@witchfinder1976 Always thought it was one of the better attempts at a conversion on the C64. At least it's fairly rated on Lemon64.

SAS Combat would have been pretty decent for the money at the time, even if it is a bit dull. MIG-29 was just too hard for my liking!
Excellent subject! 😁
The Human Race Theme Music - A Rob Hubard Banger 👍
It's a classic 🙂
At the very start of the C64, there were mostly arcade rip-off's. Frogger, Pac-Man, Skramble, Donkey Kong, etc.
Indeed there were, though not many were budget price at that time until Mastertronic came along.
Great video as always.
Thank you!
Where's Edward Woodward!?
I know, right?!
@@witchfinder1976 I got the game as a copy with just the title written on it. You can imagine my disappointment as a child... 😢
some good titles there.
The top end of the list isn't bad.
A more accurate rip-off of Commando was Who Dares Wins II, and it was a better game
Absolutely, but that wasn't originally released at budget price, though it did get a re-release by Alternative eventually.
