Yay we see evolution in the group! I always liked Girlfriend but their songs sounded really similar to each other and the dance routines had a similar vibe to them too. Love the new song and love the routine even more. I feel like they are finally past the "let's impress the public with their technique by doing difficult moves" stage and are being given actually interesting choreography. Love how when they do the move at 1:30 (and in each chorus afterwards), everyone is facing front except one person facing side. It's unexpected and really cool. And then at the end, they bring it full circle by having everyone face the side (3:22). Like, this move looks cooler from the side, since you can't really see what the arms are doing from the front, so for the earlier iterations, when only one person was doing it, your eye really zoomed in on that individual since they were the only one doing something interesting, and you're left with this feeling of anticipation because having just one person do it facing the side makes you really want to see what it would look like if they all did it facing the side, and then BAM! they give you that satisfaction at the end. Great choreography, there, building suspense and anticipation and making sure to deliver at the end. It's like how good music is written - giving hints of tonic but not resolving but then finally fully resolving at the end. So satisfying.
Ray Lin do you read Kpopalypse? Vocal fag isn't a term I see used generally so was curious. Anyway, vocal fag is totally stupid because of all the processing. You can't analyze vocal technique when the vocals are manipulated. Dance cannot be manipulated so it's a completely legit topic to analyze. But I guess you think critical thinking just ruins everything... if that's how you roll you do you but don't criticize others for not being as unobservant as you.
I'm not talking about a change in formation though. I wasn't talking about the V formation they made - that certainly is a simple formation and if I were like "omg they made a V how cool" I would have also been like "what the fuck are you talking about?" The point was that everyone was facing front but just one person faced off to the side, and it's especially cheeky since the dance move is hard to see from the front so you can't actually really see it except for the one person out of seven who is doing it off to the side. It's an elegant, minimal move that actually has a really cool, outsized impact - I think that makes it worth a mention. It's also pretty unique - can you think of another kpop dance where everyone was doing the same move but just one person was doing it in a different direction? I've been watching kpop dance since a decade ago and I can't think of one, and maybe you can, but it still would be a tiny minority in what is now quite a large sample size of kpop choreos. And again, I think kpopalypse's point re vocalfag is that it's pointless in a music form where everything is amplified and machine rendered, and I totally agree. But I vocalfag all over opera since there's a point to it there - when i go to the opera, I can hear the singer's real, unadulterated voice (except for the acoustics of the hall) so you actually can pass judgment on vocal ability in that context, so it's not that vocalfag is pointless in it of itself, but it's pointless in the kpop context. I dunno, I could have just let this go but something nags at me about your comment - I don't really see what you get out of giving a negative reaction to a positive post, especially when your argument is not really on point. Like, if someone likes something, do you go out of your way to be like "no, you shouldn't like it and this is why?" (outside of obvious unethical or illegal contexts, of course). If you do... wow you must be popular lol. I would love to debate the merits/demerits of this dance with you especially since you at least have the brains to be skeptical and if you read kpopalypse you have the right attitude towards kpop (aka you're not some rabid oppa-can-do-no-evil fan) but I feel like you might have bitten off more than you can chew. I love how gfriend, having six members who you initially thought would be hard because the formations would have no center, executed it very well by not having a center in manny choreo but instead forces you to shift your perspective into the person singing. And not only that, they also force you to look at the group dancing entirely. I especially love Eunha's first part in the beginning. The succession gives off the futuristic effect and feel with only their bodies not any fx.
I tried to learn this in 2017, 2019 and lastly 2021, and in those three ocassions i got fed up and gave up, for me at least this is the hardest Gfriend dance, its fast paced and it has complex steps, truly amazing they can pull this off
do their staff put some machine on their body and have somebody to control them sp that they'll be synchronized? if not then i will be shookt. my bbs are really workin'
