A tour of Googie’s winter garden in Cumbria

- Join flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery of Common Farm Flowers as she has a winter tour of her Mum Googie's garden - with top tips for pond management (involving old fashioned towelling nappies,) plant feed with comfrey, how much compost for a 0.8 acre garden, overwintering bumblebees and hedgehogs, pruning hydrangeas, cutting back hellebores, and preventing rabbit damage to flowering wild orchids in the spring, Googie is her inimitable self and clearly fully recovered from her broken ankle as she attacks frost damaged acanthus with her new @niwakihq snips while dressed in her also new Brora dungarees.

I absolutely adore your mom. She gets around better than I do. Treasure her...I miss mine every day. It did not dawn on me until today how important the bones of the garden are. Your mom's garden is outstanding!!! I love all the turns, curves and mystery but also how it's borders are defined with shrubs and rock walls. Really stunning. I would love to see an overhead view with a drone of the garden bones. You can clearly see the boundaries but from above I bet it would look really beautiful. By the way I would love to have a garden full of hedgehogs and I thought they did carry purses...lol. God bless y'all and thank you for sharing your mom's beautiful garden.

Absolutely wonderful video. Loved every minute and will have to watch it again. I wish we had hedgehogs here on Cape Cod. Your Mom looks terrific. Such energy. I hope I can still carry a full water jug the length of the garden when I'm in my 80s! I shall try and spend more time in my winter garden.

I too stitch quilts all winter to keep me sane until I can play in the dirt again. I love all aspects of it, from designing to completing, and yes, Googie is right, must machine quilt to be able to make more quilts to give! ❤❤❤

Fantastic George! you had better beware of Googie super seeding your popularity, as she to is so very likeable. She is really a great inspiration to younger gardeners. In spite of continuous load shedding which our country is becoming famous for, I am pleased I am not trying to garden in the UK. Much tougher than in Johannesburg SA. That snow and frost destroys so much, leaving an awful mess. The bumblebee bit was special, will be working on that for our next winter. Say warm and enjoy your visit.

I wonder if Google is a nickname for Georgia or Georgette.
Googie is her nickname given her by her brothers and cousins when she was a little girl. Her real name is Gilly. When she became a grandmother she announced she wasn't old enough to be Granny so she'd be Googie instead and the name has stuck. All my children's friends call her Googie which is very sweet x
