- I figured out how to program my own games on the old and slow GBA and now I’m excited to share my progress with you!
This is what I can push the console to do so far. I want to make it look even better in the next version. This level of detail was very difficult to achieve and this really has taught me extreme optimization and how to fight for every last frame per second.
Comment below what games you would like to see remade on the GBA!
Thank you for all the positive support!

This was recommended to me and man I'm glad I watched! Subbed! Great stuff!
I'm glad you made it! Thank you for the support! :)
3DSage hey! What games are you planing on making in the future?
@@pugg5ter542 Whatever games people comment the most about! Minecraft, resident evil, zelda, and goldeneye are in the lead.
@@3DSage OOOOOOOOOO This looks perfect for First Person Shooters! Check out Ice Nine (made by the people behind Duke Nukem Advance) It has some very impressive lighting effects for GBA I just spent 250 on a complete copy. I personally want to see a horror game like Silent Hill or even a brand new IP, the closest the GBA got to horror was Monster House which is a hidden gem that's sorta like a mix between Zelda and Resident Evil. GBA is my favorite system so much potential! Check out Payback it's one of my favorite GBA games and is very impressive. I'm very much looking forward to where this goes and will be waiting for updates :D
@Cory Enos Same :D
The Game Boy Advance is way more _advanced_ than I thought.

It looks a lot like a DS game. I'm impressed by how fluid it runs.
That's a great compliment to me so thank you for saying that! :)
Isn't the DS basically just a tweaked GBA anyway? Hardware-wise, I mean. Similar to how the Wii is essentially an overclocked GameCube with more ram and the additional bells and whistles?
It looks like Xbox but with lower resolution

Imagine... just imaging if a game came out for GBA looking like this back in like, '02. People would have lost their shit.
Take a look at the game Kill Switch
Take a look at doom 2 Lol
Just took a look at both of those and they don't look as good as this. The framerate, lighting, and particles all make this look way better imo
Yeah there were multiple 3D games for the system, but they weren't of this quality. Although any game from Velez & Dubail are the best official showcase for the 3D capabilities of the system, graphical warping aside.
The colored lighting is prob the most impressive part here. It looks p nice.

I know it's just a simple ray caster but those lightmaps really make the visuals pop. What a great idea.
It's neat, but could you actually make a *game* with this?
After rendering everything, how much storage space/ram/processor cycles are left over to be used for other processes, like enemies and inventory and different levels and so forth?
This is a great question!
You could make a walking simulator.
There were multiple 3d games on the system so I’d say yes. I’m not sure how it would perform but it could be done.
That’s literally comparable to DS, this is FIRE
would have to be a very weak looking DS game tbh
poudink which would imply that’s its comparable
@@dennisdeez123 okay, maybe I should've used stronger terms. I've never seen a DS game with doom 3D.
@@poudink5791 i've, and played it, there is a homebrew for it
@@BeatBall You could make Switch homebrew with graphics comparable to starfox on the SNES but that doesn't mean switch graphics are comparable to DS graphics
@Frax SM64DS's player model alone would make the GBA lag heavily.
The movement is so much smoother on this one than before, good job! Very excited to see this on minecraft.
Thank you! I worked hard on making the movement feel smooth and im happy with how it feels to play. :)
@@3DSage this is just... impressive!
@Dab Knight I could never forget ocarina of time :)
@Matheus Fernandes Thank you Matheus! I love this. I would like to share the video on my instagram and twitter if I may tag you. Thank you!
@@3DSage what kind of framerate are we seeing? It looks great. Is there room for lit sprite based enemies?
The fact that such high quality 3D is running off a GBA in such a smooth framerate impresses me.
Thank you! :)
Check out Velez & Dubail's work on the system. They were also able to pull off some 3D magics there. Games include V-Rally 3, Stuntman and Driver 3
I am glad there are people out there like you keeping the homebrew community up and running. I hope generations in the future will appreciate the efforts you all made to preserve these technologies .
Dude, that's so realistic for gameboy advance.
it's a ray-tracing 2.5d not 3d engine, just like the one in doom, still very impressed by the lighting effects and pretty hi-res textures, good gob 3d sage, or should i say 2.5d sage. 😀
It is more like wolfenstein 3d, but with sky and floor textures, doom on the gba is more impresive(sorta, kinda), but this demo has a way higher framerate.
@@Bug110 you mean ray-casting?
@@toad8840 Look up "ray casting".
And ray tracing has existed for like 40 years, it's not anything new.
If you did this demo on GBA in 2003, you would have become a millionaire!
:( If only we could turn back time haha. Oh well better late than never.
Well there was as impressive 3D engines a bit later one. But yeah it’s very good optimized raycasting engine

I thought you were an amateur programmer. I stand corrected. You deserve more than 1mil subs.
I kind of am an amateur programmer haha. I figure things out on my own. I fail so much but I learn and always try to get better.
You are an expert programmer, I don’t care what the requirements are, but you don’t have to meet them exactly. Its like the Genius thing. If you have an IQ of above 150 or so, you are a Genius, but if it’s 145 for example, you’re still a genius just not with a capital G.
@@3DSage no i am you're big brain i can't fathom doing this on my own 😭
@@3DSage well, i think it's possible to upgrade doom 2 (gba) graphics using this techdemo.
I feel like a lot of programmers highly underestimate the value of their work. Just because you lack an ego doesn't mean what you accomplish is amateur. Good work.
I corrupted it with RTC
Oh shit. I should do that too.
Thanks for the idea.
This is such an accomplishment- Never knew the GBA hardware could be pushed this far and run super smooth-
This is too good, you deserve more recognition! I'm still waiting for Minecraft GBA progress report 2 though. Really loved the lighting you made.

I honestly don't know what to say about this piece of software right there...
You f*cking breaked out of the limits of this console and just played god on this thing.

Really, this is just a basic Wolf 3D-like raycaster, while GBA had actual Doom engine running, and a few fully polygonal ones. Hardly breaking any limits. Looks nice and smooth, though.
Can't wait for an explanation video if we get one :) would love to see you explain all the technical details on this

That is beyond amazing! New subscriber here. With that engine you can make a LOT of different stuff.
The textures and lighting reminds me of Quake II. Anyway, that's some amazing results from a mere GBA! Used to by my first and so far, best Nintendo experience. Still get the chills on the startup sequence and I still have my very first GBA SP bought back in '03 or '04, I think
The console can run games THIS GOOD, and Sega couldn't even port Sonic 1 to the console properly.
This looks absolutely amazing, seriously, it's so good
Thank you so much!
You dont get the recognition you deserve! The fact that your still going strong with your improvements with GBA technology inspires me. Keep on Sage! And hey how about an update on the zelda project? Ive been following that piece for some time now
I really wish that someday, someone starts a Kickstarter to make a whole new 3D GBA game because i really believe that now it's possible to make a amazing looking and playable FPS or even more on it, and i just really like the Gameboy Advance over all, even more now that i know it can have games that look something out of the PS1.

Looks very impressive and you managed to avoid the texture warping as seen in a lot of other impressive 3D games on GBA like Driv3r and Asterix & Obelix XXL. That latter game is still probably the most impressive work I've ever seen on the GBA. Think your tech demo could use used for a 3D platformer someday?
Absolutely superb work there!
Remarkable progress! Thanks for sharing
I'd like to see an alien isolation adaptation for the gba, that should be really really cool
Very, very impressive. I can’t wait to see how the engine runs when calculating things like AI routines and handling enemies, items and gunfire. Looks super cool!
The old generation is not dead yet! And you are one of those who will bring them back to live!
I am amazed!
This is worth a sub, and i dont really do the whole subscribe thing. keep it up!

This looks amazing. I did notice though the environments look like something out of Wolfenstein 3D with blocks and 90 degree walls. Can it support something more like DooM/Duke 3D type of environments with arbitrary heights and geometry?
Wow I ran this and it was amazing to see these graphics come out with the GBA🥳

What's the progress about the gba version of Minecraft?
Big issue with the GBA model in the video: the screen isn't slightly off-center towards the right side

Really awesome! You must be an incredible programmer.
Hope to see Minecraft (w textures) like this soon :)
Yes I will be adding textures to Minecraft GBA :)
Absolutely amazing. I used to have Duke Nukem for the GBA and this totally blows that out of the water.
Nintendo has dominated the mobile market share by optimizing “out dated” hardware. The original gameboy and now even the switch utilize inexpensive hardware but push it beyond what people considered possible/ feasible.
I deeply encourage you to use your skill set to try and push the limits of what old tech can accomplish. The applications might surprise the world! Very good work 😁!
Well I wouldn't call what the switch uses outdated or inexpensive, only maybe the Wii as it is only about 150% of a GameCube.
The Switch ddidn't use an inexpensive procesor, there was literally nothing better on the market for it at the time.
@@Whatnoww yeah, the switch costs 110 dollars if you count out the cost of Dock and Joycons. For that price, its amazing, but arm a55's certainly weren't the best at the time. Iirc, didn't a73 come out long before by then?
Eh, their games on Switch are performing within expectation. The Tegra X1 was always considered to be the chip to FINALLY equal the 7th gen consoles in fidelity and performance in a low power, mobile package, maybe even outpacing them a little in certain aspects. Considering the Switch's games are close enough to what you would see on PS3, 360, and Wii U that sounds about right. As for the ports of the modern games the Switch gets, they give us a look at how those games would look and run on the older consoles if devs had continued making games for them.
@@Whatnoww The Tegra X2 had been out for over a year before the launch of the Switch
Do quake 1 for the gba pls

Dude, this is amazing!!!

@@bigbraintwo Troll?
@@herakets3259 uh no?
edit: i forgot the controllers and the console but nothing else
@@bigbraintwo You're just not accounting for the superior graphics card and processor, or what? Resolution alone does not account for physics acceleration(also larger number of collision detection vectors, etc), for example, or other processes like mipmapping, anti-aliasing, and lighting. The more matrix algebra a processor can pull off, the better the 3D.
I would totally buy a game if you release a full one with this engine. There are ways you can still release games on older platforms if you can find a publisher.
That would be fun to do! I also want to try to remake games on the GBA but I would enjoy making my own too. :)
@@3DSage Remakes would be fun too
amazing stuff. I think with that engine there is a posibility to create good hub based rpg with first person view.
