- In a previous video I had a look at one of our used car guys Nissan Frontier he picked up at the auction ( • Used Car Guy Special: ... ) In that video I showed a few of the codes it set for the EVAP system and one for the fuel level sensor. Let's have a look and see what's going on. -Enjoy!

Like I mentioned in the video folks, I would loved to have shown the rest of the process but keeping my guys in the shop going and fed is high on my priority list and it is the way it worked out on this one. I've said it before and I'll say it again.... TRUST ME... there will be more rusty junk in the future to show you 😁 -Cheers!
I got the rusty junk for you to work on! =)
I will take the butcher’s word for it. 🤓
Keep em coming! Congrats on getting rid of your serial butt grabber cuomo. Hopefully you flip it red next cycle.
Are your guys flatrate or hourly?
Good to see you take care of your guys...
Eric gets me every time. “Smells like old gas, can you smell that” I then catch myself taking a big ole whiff of???
piss?
Old gas. I can taste. The new old gas is worse than the old, old gas when it is old. Old, old, old gas still smells good today.
I spent too much time in a shop when I was a kid.
ROFLMAO 😂😆😂😆
3:15 “I’ll be dipped” I thought Derek from Vice Grip Garage snuck into the shop. Great info as always
Haha glad to see the same people over here
We've got a code for the canister vent valve, so I'm gonna do the right thing, and pretend we never saw that

@@arcadeuk comment of the night goes to you sir. 🙈
HAhaha! I could see Derek walking around the corner saying... need to change the relays, it'll work........ probly not. perfect
Wow got to love the Nissan fix. "LOAD THE PARTS CANON AND PREPARE TO FIRE!"
And Nissan makes money on every last part that's replaced - good or bad.
So Eric, I bought a big nasty.
I had a mower spindle pulley that would not come off. I tried everything. I'm not a pro so I didn't want to spend as much as I did but...
One squeeze of the trigger and the pulley came right off. I think it was scared.
Looking forward to years of destroying stuff.
Yours truly.
THE "Self Made Auto Channel" heck yes man!!!!!
I swear that’s exactly what I hear him say even though I know what he says.
That's what UA-cam 's subtitle bot thinks he's saying!
Would have loved to see you open up the old canister to take a look inside.
Same here, I used to do that a lot when I worked on vehicles for a living, to hunt down the actual defect.
flood car and mud filled I'd say. by the overall picture ;)
Forensic autopsies are extremely entertaining and full of insight!
@@throttlebottle5906 Came here to say this... That underbody.
The Used Car Guy never disappoints! I wonder how many cars get auctioned off with stupid faults like that…
This fella brings me a fair amount of cars and some of them go back to the auction and some of them he does really good on and gets lucky with an easy fix and a good buy....

Enhance unenhance gets me every time .Best regards to you and Mrs O.
Gives me donut operator vibes lol
I am a 77 yo retired mechanic. I have developed zero tolerance for many persons. I miss some parts of the trade, like the guys I worked with, BUT......................... I can live vicariously through your videos.
from what I've learned watching you guys over the past 6 months is that most used sellers and secondaries automatically assume that a vehicle over a few years old has automatically *fried its computer*. I made that mistake as well back in November. the damage turned out to be a blown fusible link in the post wire of the alternator; I didn't know they were still USING fusible links. the vehicle turned out to have a major enough hole in non-strategic areas to be classed as junk by the PA rust rules.
What a way to keep parts sales up. Write TSBs that say "buy everything".
or because they know what the rust belt does to the metal and high temps to the rubber. meaning they knew damned well the metal ont he solenoid valves would rust and cause issues as well as the rubber hose ends split, cannister clog and sensors breakdown/gum up internally(corn fuel/ethanol anyone?) cough-cough
I dunno why, but I freakin love the used car guy videos
Part of replacing everything is to prevent gas spitting back out when refueling due to clogged vent hoses. Mine did that, replaced one vent hose. After it filled better, but gotta fill slow at the end otherwise it’ll burp a bit of fuel.
its like feeding a baby lol
This guy's personality is always cool and entertaining. Eric O would be my mechanic if I lived close. :)
I like the used car guy specials but i can never get enough of you replacing wheel bearings.i seem to pick up usefull tips every time you do one.
They're the best.. Same as the brake jobs. I don't know why. I just love the actual mechanical jobbies
Got to love Nissan's diagnosis... replace everything
It's possible that there was a redesign. None of the old parts fit with the redesigned parts, so if you replace one, you have to replace them all.
@@russellhltn1396 That is not uncommon. Ford did it on a brake switch for cruise control. New switch, wiring, connector, and another electric gizmo all for a switch leaking brake fluid.
@@terryharvey4811 Kia did it on the Fuel Filter for the Sedona/Carnival in 2012, but failed to tell anyone that you would need to purchase a new Water In Fuel Sensor as the old one had a slightly different thread pattern to the original. As such using an old WIF could cause air to sneak in to the fuel filter, and give alot of problems to the injection system!
I found out the hard way!
Replace everything; with a Toyota
As Eric O said it's CYA for Nissan. Instead of the mechanic just replacing the evap canister only to find out the vent valve quits 1 week later and the customer has to come back again. IIRC the only updated parts are the hoses to the filler neck and the filler neck.
This is one of the best diagnostics videos you’ve done yet
Start to finish
You didn’t have to show how the parts were replaced.
There’s plenty of hacks to show that
The diagnostic is the key
Thanks man
Going to memory
When you retire from the businesses I hope you will consider being an instructor someday Eric. Your very good at it.

Hi Eric, I'd just like to say thanks, I've been watching your channel for a while and your knowledge on dealing with rusty parts is a great help in my restoration project.
Great content as usual. An evap canister 101 course would be great, I didn’t understood half of what you’ve said.
Avoca Smoka....that could be the name of a club you open when you retire from fixing rusty buckets. Until then, look forward to move videos and tips.
With an off road vehicle, the inlet hose to the vent valve should be under the hood along with the valve. Ford's done it for years which eliminated that problem EXCEPT on some of the Expeditions that had the vent valve in the back just above the rear diff. Some of those vehicles wouldn't refuel until you removed the purge hose under the hood. Replace the vent valve, vent valve filter and add the updated hose from the vent valve filter inlet to under the hood held in place at one of the master cylinder's tube's. Problem solved. Good diag/repair Mr. O.
There was a limited time recall to replace the fuel level sensor. My 06 didn't show the problem, but a coworker's 07 Frontier had the problem. He got the replacement sensor and labor for free. NICE!
Erik, with all your experience, I’d like to hear your opinion about vehicles in general. Many others probably would as well…
1. Which vehicle(s) would you recommend people avoid buying?
2. Which vehicles do you rarely see costly repairs required?
3. Which vehicle(s) would you consider the “Most and Least” reliable?
4. Which vehicle(s) do you find it “Easiest and Hardest” to work on or find parts for?
Thank you for your great videos, keep them coming!
Darin
Yes it would be a great video from someone who actually knows, But unfortunately he would piss off MANY viewer's Is why he won't, And some of the Problems are Salt belt related he would almost have to mention if you do or don't live in the Northern States, With some cars others not so much, Scotty Kilmer cover's this subject well. it's probably why he has 4.44 million subs.🧐
Thanks for thorough vid on this issue. Glad you did the testing and showed the actual problem. Very true, many would just shotgun and replace everything. I could not feel good replacing parts knowing they possibly were not needed just to get the problem fixed and out. I would not like to pay for parts not needed myself.
Nissan : "When you get this code, arm the parts cannon with the following ammunition, and fire"
Respect that you don't swear. Another great video, they might of tried to ruin the truck so they could get it cheaper at the market. Cheers
Great job finding that ! @ 15:02 mark, I believe you passed an older Oldsmobile 442 in the parking lot -- would LOVE to see you work on that one !! That's when cars were cars !!
Love the AC/DC references. Australia's single contribution to western civilization
How dare you disrespect Mick Dundee like that! 😂
Little River Band. Bee Gees. Helen Reddy. And lest we forget Olivia Newton John.
@@bigragu6828 sorry, Bee Gees are not from Australia. They stayed there briefly, but they are English. For some reason Australians are always wanting to say that. Helen Reddy? If I were you I would not mention her. The other two are OK, but nothing special.
I'd give Men Without Hats their 5-minutes.
Cant forget Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter.
Love the no guess approach to diagnosis.
Thank you for all that you do. The right to repair must be upheld, and you're doing a great service to us all by continuing to document these repairs (successful of not). Again, thank you.
Another great video from SMA thank you Eric!
I really enjoy your videos, I’ve been watching a bunch of them. Thank God Indiana doesn’t do car inspections, they haven’t since the 70s although there are some crappy cars on the road, bumper is being held on by bungee cords etc. lol stay safe!
Best part of this video is at 15:03, that '68 Cutlass is a beauty. I hope whoever owns it keeps it garage kept during the winter up there in New York, the salt belt.
Thank you for giving us some closure.
You going to give us a tour of the updates done to the outside of the shop, Eric? Would love to see it!
5:10 Nissan recommends to replace everything... follows instructions and replaces with a different Make.
Great content, top notch!
Enjoyed the evaporative mystery. We all get better in other mystery's pursued with your approach. Thanks.
Anyone else notice Mr.O really likes his wife.
Who doesn't ? Hot as a firecracker !!!!!
Probably because they’re a seemingly very successful, happy family.
who else would he like? hannah??
Cheaper to keep em
If I had a Mrs. O, I'd like her a lot too!
As always great information. So Happy I live where we have NO rust. I grew up just West of you, watched cars rust away, sad.
I have a 2006 Xterra which is basicall the same as the Frontier in regards to the powertrain. I took the Xterra to a Nissan Dealer when i t was under warranty and produced the same tech bulletin you were referring to and the one about the sending until and asked to have the work done under warranty. The dealer did the sending unit no questions asked, but said they will not do the valve. The reason given is that I drive on dusty roads and the tech bul excluded that. Imagine that living in the desert driving a 4x4 and I did something so horrible as driving on a dusty road. Which all of the advertising literature for the Xterra was all about.
Awesome work!!!!! Wish I lived closer rotisserie send all my work to you!!! Thanks for the ride! 👍🏾
Heeeeeeey there Eric . Awesome to have a update on the Nissan .
Those canisters are wicked expensive too.
Just blow em out, done it a couple times already.
Your customers are so lucky to have you,who is willing to go the extra mile
Good man, keeping your guys busy!
good job as usual never boring
I am sure that the canister was plugged and at fault but something I was taught and have experienced myself is that an inoperative or inaccurate fuel level sensor can cause evap vent faults. The pcm uses fuel level input to determine the amount of time it should take to get to a certain amount of vacuum and also determine the rate of vacuum decay. So I always trouble shoot fuel level faults if present. Very cool videos and I love all the personality that comes with them. Thanks for doing them.
Interesting. Wonder if bc of the level fault it pulled a vacuum constantly and sucked all that dirt into the canister?
WhenEVER Mrs. O comes out into the shop to talk to you during filming, you then MUST show her in the video. You think we come to your UA-cam channel to see YOU??!! :)
Hey, from Boscawen NH. Enjoying your channel since I found it three weeks ago. Very informative. Been binge watching since then. I must say, seeing Mrs O and you looking at each other is precious. Hope You Two never lose that.
Unfortionately i havent seen theese videos til now, great content. Digging through the videos and already speaking like Eric. Wounderful channel and content. Just like me bashing the struggles on cars. Keep up!
Great diagnosis Dr. O !!!👍👍
ANOTHER GREAT JOB FROM SMA
Well done, the Nissan lives to fight another day, looks like the buyer got a bargain, until he gets your invoice, but even then still a bargain.
Love the detail Eric!
Needed the distraction from my soon to be revived, laptop...
I've been waiting patiently for this video. I have a 03 pathfinder 4x4 I bought for a hunting vehicle with a emission code. Thanks for letting me know the laundry list I need to check.
I worked for Nissan for a yr. This is definitely a normal there. Tsb on many cars while I was there.if one window regulator is bad you change all 4 doors lol .
Great explanation, Eric you have to run business and sometimes you can't video everything but the show must go on. Love the video stay safe and healthy. Thanks 😊
Nice work Eric easier to replace than to repair that’s there thinking
That was interesting how you proved the canister was plugged. I love the manufacturer approach. Change everything! Nice Job! Another happy customer!
It would be good to see you walk through a diagram of an evap system to better understand the parts and symptoms.
Nice job Eric 👍👍
It's OK that you don't know, dude. I'm happy because I've achieved closure due to the outro music playing once again. I was on life hold for 48 hours waiting for that moment. ;-)

OOOH! I saw a blue Olds wagon (I think) in the lot there! That must be the one that was on your Insty a few days ago. NIICE!! My next "new" vehicle is coming from that era. If I'm going to spend $20 LARGE on something that rolls down a roadway, I'm getting reliability, quality, AND ease of repairs. Sayonara OBD-ANYTHING!!!
Nice engineering of that EVAP system, so that it draws in road silt. Beautiful, lol!! Gotta love it ... unless you own it.
Nissan and GM are cut from the same cloth on EVAP systems 😂
@@SouthMainAuto - Ain’t that the truth!
Nice find.Keep up the good work
Good work Jay!
Then the "used car guy" will sell it to a sucker. Maybe put an SMA approved vehicle sticker on it.
On your previous video, I mentioned that I had a Nissan, which was a 1988 or 89 Pathfinder (I'm old). Someone tried to siphon gas out of my tank so got a locking gas cap. A few days later, they siphoned more gas. The undid the hose clamps on the gas hose from the filler neck to the gas tank which was easily accessible in the rear wheel well. Great engineering.
There it is again: 'Come on baby!'.
I bought a Power Point after watching your videos . I am now the envy of my friends
You’re a good boss
Take care of your techs.
Always fun working behind someone isn't it. I got a similar problem I've been playing with for a bit on my 07 galant. Last time I just wiggled everything because I didn't have a lot of time. Lasted long enough to get the sticker, lol. Now I just gotta find the time to fix it more permamnently, lol. Never know what'll go next. Thanks for sharing.
Another awesome video Eric O
Thanks for the update
Diagnostics at its finest. This guy probably has many regular customers because he takes the time to diagnose issues instead of just throwing parts at it and charging you for them. It's hard finding an honest shop like this one for sure.
Great job and video like always A+
Be glad it doesn’t need a starter like my Titan does. It’s underneath the intake manifold. I can’t find a mechanic in my area willing to change it so soon I’ll be cussing up a storm while changing it.
For a minute, I thought you were going say Jason cleaned out the canister and it starting working, lol.
Another cool video.
A hollowed out canister won't cause a check engine light like a hollowed out catalytic converter does!
Thanks for acknowledging the question of why were the relays messed with in the first place. I knew there wasn't an answer, but good to know others are just as curious.
And for your Nissan question; Shotgun, yes. Part numbers are sometimes 'superseded', but they are the exact same part.
Love the AC⚡DC reference, dirty deeds, done dirt cheap 🎸🎸🎸
SMA saves the day....again
Thanks for this video have a great day
Love your videos
Sending units are really common on the older nissans, As for the bulitin the reason for the laundry list of parts is because they are prone to filling up with dirt/dust so the new hoses etc have filters and a different collector unit to minimize the dirt infiltration. When you said short/open i was expecting the evap valve to be badly corroded they expand so much they just short out in a spectacular fashion and is an easy find . vehicle not running clear the code and it will come back instantly. I cut one of those canisters open once just for giggles it was plugged solid.
Great job man
Another great job
Thank you Dr. O !
Nice work 👍👍
"I'll be dipped".... what? Are we Derrick from Vice Grip Garage now?? Lol. I've been hearing you use more of his terminology as of late. Lol 😁😁
Haha I love that guy! I'm just gonna pretend I didn't see that has to be my fav :D
"There's your problem lady!" @Watch Wes Work he's great to watch too, electrical, diesels farm tractors and lots you never know what Wes is doing, including Frankie Fritz' Ford Ranger!
Another Great Video.
Eric, Nissan had a recall on one of those relays back in the day. The relay would fail internally and cause a no start condition. Truck would run fine, shut it off and when you tried to start it again, DEAD. I'm betting that happened and they didn't take the time to to check if the recall had been done and just started yanking relays to see which one was bad. That relay was the only time my 05 ever left me stranded. All over a $2 relay.
Well I’ll be dipped - VGG Derek is creating a new vocabulary in the world of the UA-cam cars :-)
Why do you keep telling us how hot Mrs. O. is looking (today) and then no on video confirmation? ARGH! These teasers are maddening. Great video again Eric as always.
Thanks for the video!

Watching another car repair channel on a Ray-ny day (hint). Parts cannon. OMG.
I have to tell you the Nissan Frontiers are one tough mid size truck. I have picked up several from the auction for a Toyota vehicle to put on their lot for used vehicles and they don’t stick around more then 2 weeks. I will be looking at purchasing a new one if the prices come with in reason 🤞🙏🏻
