Filmriots whole purpose is to show the different phases of film making. So while yes we have sadly moved out of the whole DIY feel, we've moved up to a higher level of education that we can all aspire too. And once we start getting out on the lower end productions, I think we all will appreciate seeing these episodes. I miss the old DIY stuff as much as the next guy, but the quality of what these guys put out have sky rocketed. and hopefully it will help us when we start getting to that more semi pro range.
Imagine having the money to play around with this kind of gear lol. I'm still stuck in the phase of me and my mates dicking about with DSLRs, GoPros, phones and whatever else we can get our hands on. Skateboards for dollys, rope and a pole sticking out a backpack for handheld stabilisation, and calling in favours from everyone I've ever met haha!
Knowing the gear you guys use is always so helpful to know. I always trust the things you promote and I've bought my c100 and aputure ls 1s led light in the process. I even built my own diy light bar from you guys. Learning the right tools are a great starting point to study what fits the best to my needs and these videos always help. Haven't been disappointed with any of it either, great video as always
It'd be cool if you guys could get some new sponsors. I don't think I'm the only one who just completely tunes out with the usual domain.com, especially as it's the same thing most of the time. Something like a film equipment company would be really interesting! Just something that your general viewers might get a bit more out of :) Never the less, great video as always. Keep up the awesome films and tips!
Hey Ryan what kind of Lavalier microphone do you have I'm starting a UA-cam channel and also I have a camera recommendation the Panasonic gh4 with the 18-35mm with a speed booster with a I footage crane and a I footage slider
Yea could you go over how you would personally handle production audio recording (specifically dialogue)? I'm curious why no lavalieres were mentioned during the audio portion and just want to hear your stance on it?
Technological advantages are only a fraction of the equation. You can have an imax camera but if you have no story or anything interesting to put on camera, then there’s no point. Just make the most out of what you do have
In 2022 I'm still shooting on a d7100 (2013) with a cheap kit lens and a yongnuo 50mm 1.8 without a stabilizer. Im using my broken 5 years old 20$ tripod but im happy with my gear. It could be worse :)
S&S Pictures Its funny he mentioned that bc I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm going to light a scene in the forest in my next short film so I'd like to know how he did it.
+Jake Smith What's with you replying all over this comment section spreading negativity? If you don't have something polite and/or worthwhile to say, don't say anything.
You should never let the equipment you use shape your vision. As long as it gets it done, who cares? The audience aren't going to see what its shot on in the story.
Hey Ryan and Film Riot crew! Could you tell me what your setup is at 1:33? I want to invest in an easy rig for our DJI Ronin M which is around 20 lbs fully rigged. I rented the Vario 5 with 9" extended arm but when flying it I noticed that my hips caused the easy rig to bounce and therefore screwed up the shot. Do you have a recommendation for extension length as well as the need for the serene attachment? Also have you guys used a Ronin M and still noticed vibrations? Thanks for any help you can give- Brian
For 4 years, ya boi's been doing comedy sketches, short films and recently released a feature film, all can be found on my channel! Check it out, lemme know what you think! Much love!
It is always nice to have half a million dollars of gear just lying around the house. Except for the camera, you seem to be using more and better gear than they used in the whole of Indiana Jones.
Hey guys... Take a sec. and checkout my zero budget short, "FRIGHT HOUSE" and my experimental piece, "NIGHT SHOTS"... (about #16th and #17th in from newest, respectively)... Thanks much, Moses...
Hi guys, my name is Luca and I find your channel very intersting. As I'm new to filmmaking and I've got a lumix g7 with 14-140 (mirrorless 4K) I was wondering if you could tell me some tips, advices about focusing and having a not grainy image.....how could I have the best 4K image ? For Christmas I'm gonna buy a 14-42 mm because lots of filmmakers say that it's better for filmmaking than the 14-140 (should I get it ?). Please, I need your help !!!
Them: you need everything in this video to start making short films Me: I have a Nikon D3400 a tripod, stabilizer and and neewer 160 LED light 😑 Lol you have to start some where
FilmRiot I know this is a fairly old video and what I'm about to ask might seem very obvious but how do you get different angles of the same scene? I'm guessing the only answer is to have multiple cameras but is there any other way of doing it? Also lets say a shot is from behind character x, then seamlessly switches to an overall shot of two characters, all without pauses or anything, how doesn't the first camera show up in the second, wider angled shot? The explanation I thought of was that the first camera (the one from behind the guy) wasn't actually right behind him but zoomed up to his back but then how do they keep the resolution the same? wouldn't the quality go down or is it some sort of lens they use. Honestly sorry for not knowing absolutely anything, relatively new to all of this.
A question out of the blue - What do you guys think about the Samyang/Rokinon lenses designed specifically for video (t aperture, focus ring, etc)? Best solution on a budget?
Hi Ryan, did you transfer the viewfinder image to all the monitors (at camera, follow focus aso) wirelessly? If so, what kind of multicast device did you use to transfer it? Thanks
Yo man I have a release pretty soon and I REALLY need to find out some info about how to shoot an old water tower that looks like it has 2 marksmen up there? I was gonna place the guys up there, but the city got all "whiney" about it!
does the BV10 support the alexa mini well? i recently did a shoot with the alexa mini on a Sachtler Video 20 and debated grabbing a used one for my personal ursa mini.
does anyone know where to get a reasonable dslr 3 axis gimbal on blackfriday? and by reasonable i mean not more than 600 dollars. it would be nice to find something around 400 dollars
Lets just all make this clear, there was a lot of shit that you dont need that he used, and in my opinion when you start just from the minimum you learn so much more.
To those in the comments who think they have to OWN the equipment; no, you don't. Renting them is much cheaper, so it's not hard to get these cameras and accessories.
Haha and I'm using my Canon EOS 80D and saving money for a glidecam hd 2000 and a glidecam x 10. Probably takes 2 years. Sry for my english I'm from germany😬
Damn, I thought a simple Gimble, a cheap DSLR and Ambient Lighting with Lip-Synced Audio was all we needed to shoot on a Budget. Then again, you never mentioned Budget.
Dude, slow down. Not everybody can follow your rainfall of words and technical terms. Are you advertising, showing off your knowledge of film making, or trying to give a tutorial to those with interest in film making? What's your goal with the posting of these videos?
UA-cam has an option for you to slow down the speed of any video (: I understood him just fine but for the few who need it slowed down a little, just use the gear button!
I would personally like to see some sort of post apocalyptic film from you guys. That way you could get into more advanced color correction to set the whole, "world ended" mood and maybe cool ideas for like props and things.
First step: Have a lot of money...
Step zero: Make money and invest it in better gear over a period of time in YEARS.
It doesn't happen over night.. definitely have to get a second job.. or a third job.
Filmriots whole purpose is to show the different phases of film making. Josiah Zinicola Agreed, and if I recall, Ryan actually has brought this subject up a few times in the past.
Second Step, throw it all away and buy the stuff and then cry, because now you might be suffering for lack of Ideas.
LA, Chicago, and New York, I Just learned something new! :)
I just about died laughing at 1:18. Give that man a raise! hahaha.
Same 😂
Seems like no one is talking about that scene except you 😂😂👌
CinemaByte wasn't funny
I join u guys :D
ROFL
i laughed soo much too
I'm a simple man. I see a Film Riot video, I press like.
I always wonder why you don't shoot a feature film! You shoot on such a high level - why not bigger? Also i'm the 100th comment!
Imagine having the money to play around with this kind of gear lol. I'm still stuck in the phase of me and my mates dicking about with DSLRs, GoPros, phones and whatever else we can get our hands on. Skateboards for dollys, rope and a pole sticking out a backpack for handheld stabilisation, and calling in favours from everyone I've ever met haha!
same lol
Domski Plays Hey, onwards and upwards eh?
WeegieMovies I was there too a couple years ago. Now I have a Red and other "fancy" stuff.
Just keep chugging along.
WeegieMovies haha!
IM RIGHT HERE WITH YA
So much gear that I wish I had but can't affordable. Hell yeah.
William Herasme stealing is just borrowing permanently
Rent it.
Seriously Yavi I like the way you think.
+William Herasme I don't own 90% of it. I rent it when I have projects that have a budget (which is rare)
These guys just rent it.
Ok lets make a short film. The first thing you are going to need is... A fRiCkiNg ALeXa
Thanks, bought the same Alexa camera that you used. Got some amazing results!
You bought an Alexa Mini?!!!
Can you do some stuff with STOP MOTION?! Specifically, lighting a green screen, and evenly lighting a subject, please.
Knowing the gear you guys use is always so helpful to know. I always trust the things you promote and I've bought my c100 and aputure ls 1s led light in the process. +Only At Northfield Right in man! We still use our C100 mkI to shoot the episodes.
Film Riot awesome episode ryan and crew!!!
Film Riot The best I have is one of those Sony camcorders.
Ryan... What's wrong, buddy? You seem low today. :( #PrayForRyan

Wow.That is awesome gear.I will buy them all tomorrow.Must be really really cheap !
It'd be cool if you guys could get some new sponsors. I don't think I'm the only one who just completely tunes out with the usual domain.com, especially as it's the same thing most of the time. Hey Ryan what kind of Lavalier microphone do you have I'm starting a UA-cam channel and also I have a camera recommendation the Panasonic gh4 with the 18-35mm with a speed booster with a I footage crane and a I footage slider
Buy the G7 instead!
Yea could you go over how you would personally handle production audio recording (specifically dialogue)? I'm curious why no lavalieres were mentioned during the audio portion and just want to hear your stance on it?
Your video tutorials should be titled $50,000 budget filming equipment for beginners
Hey Film Riot :)
and I'm just over here with a 4 year old DSLR, the cheapest Rode mic I could buy, and an equally as cheap stabilizer from amazon.....maybe one day....
Caroline R
All you need is PASSION.
Technological advantages are only a fraction of the equation. You can have an imax camera but if you have no story or anything interesting to put on camera, then there’s no point. Just make the most out of what you do have

Saying flat, side, or tall seems faster than LA, Chicago, and New York. But hey, names are fun!
Corey the Editor my guess is they say new york because new york is called the big apple and when they call for new york it's the tallest it can be
OMG 1 MILLION LETSGOOO
I really love you guys vids so dope
Man do you have a cheaper alternative to the apple box? Don't think anyone has the money for that :\
You can actually build your own pretty cheap. Instructions are online, and a lot of new rental houses in LA do this.
Soon you'll be saying "I know you've heard me say that I know you've heard me say that the list of domains is growing"...
2:25 Where can we see that a7S project in a forest at night?
S&S Pictures Its funny he mentioned that bc I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm going to light a scene in the forest in my next short film so I'd like to know how he did it.
Temo Lara - It kinda helped he was using an a7S though.
This should be titled: Gear for a Real Movie
Did you guys use the grip truck as the moving truck in the short?
+Unidrw Sure did! Good eye.
Holy crud the flex is $850!
Cinema Studios holy crud? Are you 9?
+Jake Smith What's with you replying all over this comment section spreading negativity? If you don't have something polite and/or worthwhile to say, don't say anything.
Jake Smith No...its just more expensive then I thought it's just my personal opinion and sadly you can't accept other people's opinions. :)
When you are so early, you don't know what to do.
That means your a follower not a leader . . . and it's the age of Aquarius.
Gizmo Goose. The fuck are you on about
Great Video again! :)
You meant he made a Great Video Again!
Angel Kanchev what the fuck are you talking about
He Looks like the guy who made the “my brother Jordan” documentary
Can you try anamorphic on the GH5 pls 🙏🏻
You should never let the equipment you use shape your vision. As long as it gets it done, who cares? The audience aren't going to see what its shot on in the story.
After effects and I think there is another ?
Is that a new lav you guys are using?

What's with all this hate mail? Be grateful they're showing us this stuff anyway, thumbs up Ryan 👍🏻
But you didn't cover who is financing this stuff? Can you give us a hint?

For 4 years, ya boi's been doing comedy sketches, short films and recently released a feature film, all can be found on my channel! Check it out, lemme know what you think! Much love!
Do you recommend the 32" monitor for watching videos of the adult kind? Asking for a friend.
I just bought a D5300! I think for what we both do that camera is rock solid! Invest your money on better lenses ;)
It is always nice to have half a million dollars of gear just lying around the house. Except for the camera, you seem to be using more and better gear than they used in the whole of Indiana Jones.
OMG, That black board at 01:32, I thought it looked so stupid when I did that. But now that I've seen you do it, I feel like a pro.
I thought you guys would've used a Movi M10 or 15 for the Alexa, cool to see you fit the camera on the M5!
Good to learn the different APPLications for the APPLE box.. :D haha.. :I
I currently own a gh4 and am looking for a b-camera preferably under 1,000. I am currently looking at the g85, any suggestions?
John Buser that's probably the best if you want something similar. Maybe get a GH5 and use the GH4 as a b-cam?
Whoo Rian you are coming up on the 1 million subs! Cant wait till your there so i can congratulate you! I have 18 so just 999982 to go :D
Hey guys... Take a sec. and checkout my zero budget short, "FRIGHT HOUSE" and my experimental piece, "NIGHT SHOTS"...
(about #16th and #17th in from newest, respectively)... Thanks much, Moses...
Literally clicked into this video to see basic gear used for short films, ended seeing a lot more stuff than I expected, lmao!!!!
bad video its so good LOL! so helpful

is it possible to shoot a movie on a panasonic g7 ?
gear does not matter
William R. this video is specifically on gear it matters to an extent
William R. well as long as its at least descent and you know how to use your environment to your advantage
my friend, you can make a movie with your phone
Timothy Halleran not a cinema movie tho
All of this is just fun and amazing for those of us who just shoot with a smartphone and its stand and a selfie stick.😔
no need all if these..just a dslr/loghts/stand..u can creat ur own stabilizer and other tools..and go ahead
Them: you need everything in this video to start making short films
Me: I have a Nikon D3400 a tripod, stabilizer and and neewer 160 LED light 😑
Lol you have to start some where
@filmriot You guys are great! How have you managed to maintain the quality and novelty for decades? Not only maintain but increase!
FilmRiot I know this is a fairly old video and what I'm about to ask might seem very obvious but how do you get different angles of the same scene? I'm guessing the only answer is to have multiple cameras but is there any other way of doing it? REAL fans like me watch this video in 480p
Hi Ryan, did you transfer the viewfinder image to all the monitors (at camera, follow focus aso) wirelessly? If so, what kind of multicast device did you use to transfer it? Thanks

I only have my phone , can't afford anything else and watching filmmaking videos all day long...
Btw had anyone made a movie with mobile phone?
Either Justin is HUGE or my can lights are twice the size of yours. I've got 6 and I agree, they are the best. Just so good.
Let the mumbling incoherent intro begin! Seriously though nice video.
Hey Ryan, Out here in L.A. we call the Apple Box position that is completely flat "California" not LA ;)
Film Riot has definitely grown out of DIY
does anyone know where to get a reasonable dslr 3 axis gimbal on blackfriday? and by reasonable i mean not more than 600 dollars. it would be nice to find something around 400 dollars
Gear for a short film.. Everything that you will use for a full feature film
Where could I get the basic impact dimmers? the black ones you show at 3:03:00. What's the brand?
The list of available domain extension hasn't grown in the past 6 months.
...just sayin
Apple boxes; making Tom Cruise look like he's as tall as Ving Rhames since MI:1
What lights did you use for the outside fire shot? Surely you can't get enough kick from LEDs to do that?
My like was unlucky...
The Thirteenth.
Then unlike it.
NEVER!
you guys should start doing " Fantastically Terrible moments in cinema" again!
Lets just all make this clear, there was a lot of shit that you dont need that he used, and in my opinion when you start just from the minimum you learn so much more.
awesome video. love your channel. love the gear!
can you do low budget
RYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!! HUgs and kisses xo ! :)
Or you can just buy a camera, two lights and make El Mariachi...
Hey! 84th like!
Can u tell a little more about the easy rig... How does that work?
What is the software used in your video of teleportation ??
I'm a fan of film riot, but still don't know what he says till "I'm your host Ryan"
The best gear you can have is a Vegan diet!
Wow I'm sure glad I got that!
A+ !
To those in the comments who think they have to OWN the equipment; no, you don't. Renting them is much cheaper, so it's not hard to get these cameras and accessories.
yep, you can rent all that gear for less than 15,000 for the weekend.
Why can't you a simplify these stuffs for.a beginer?😐
Great thanks
You are killing it with sponsors. I feel like it's channel made for sponsors + random shit we record through week.
RYAN please do an episode of the zoom f8 recorder?
TOYSSSSS I CAN"T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GET THEM ALL NEED MORE FREELANCE WORK!! :D

Apple box kit for any apple-cation?
shame on me thinking the flex light was actually affordable
Haha and I'm using my Canon EOS 80D and saving money for a glidecam hd 2000 and a glidecam x 10. Probably takes 2 years. Sry for my english I'm from germany😬
3:40 , DslrGuide, anyone??
