The whole idea of double bass, and snare bass (which brought us the blast beat), were being used in punk before black metal/death metal/or thrash metal
this song is so INTENSE whenI first heard this song I thought WOW this guys are real you cant compare DIMMU BORGIR to CARPATHIAN FOREST they are different in style but both are TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL I like them both very much I really would love to see CARPATHIAN FOREST live I bet their show will be great enough said HAIL SATAN MY MASTER!!!!!
Thats very true also the use of D-Beat drumming is present in a lot of black/death metal, however if you ask anyone to classify what they are listening to as either black metal or punk even the most novice of metalheads(true metal heads) with no musical theory back ground will be able to tell you.This is because the essence and feeling of the music is different. Rhythmic pattern, progressions and scales are meant to be used as tools for the expression of the art not the defining characteristic.
Good bands from Sweden are Mork Gryning, Dismember, Nihilist/Early Entombed, Carnage, Lord Belial, Unleashed, Grave, At the Gates, The Crown, Bloodbath, Demilich, Dissection, Iniquity, Exmortem, Insomnium, Kaamos, Spawn of Possession, Theory in Practice, and obviously Opeth... First real metal bands I heard were Swedish, I have at least an above basic knowledge of swedish bands...
@EvilKempe It's a part of this music that sometimes riffs have the same rock'n'roll feeling like in the punk recordings but I think that comparing these two genres is kind of an overstatement.
@DeIMarrrrr I don't know why it is, but for some reason a lot of people seem to think an entire genre was birthed off of the influence of one band. Death/thrash/black metal, any of these *were* fairly underground, and most of their influence didn't come from the popular punk music that was coming out, there was no *first* band of any genre, most genre labeling came out way after the core group of bands came out. Punk is older, and metal takes many of its cues from punk.
@supshinto Grim and kvlt, mustn't forget the kvlt status, because you know if you aren't kvlt then something might happen, or not. Or something I'm not really sure...
mm enjoyable song, but Im not sure if was anyhting outstanding. first song ive listened to by them desides their mayhem cover. I'll look into them somemore.
I haven't read about those yet, but I will try to do that! :) I didn't know how depraved christianity was before I heard about the rip-offs, but thanks alot for the info! I appreciate it :)
Well if you listen to bands like Mayhem, and Darkthrone, they've basically play punk, but turned down the tempo, and play with diminished or minor patterns instead of major progessions. And a lot of these bands have included punk bands as their influences. In my opinion, I don't think its new, I think its more of a throw back to the bands that brought metal here.
Dimmu Borgir's older stuff is very underrated stuff, but I don't see any kind of thing what reminds Dimmu Borgir from Carpathian Forest.. Well, all have their own opinions :D
@SixStringShreddder Ooh, now we stumbled on a much deeper discussion trail. When you say "Could be just me." That's all this is, subjective view points, personally I'd rather not even use "genres," each band has its own uniqueness to it, so how can one thing be apart of another. We use genres to help us understand similarities in characteristics, but in the end it's still very subjective.
@SixStringShreddder What you are doing is looking at a fish, and looking at a man and saying that there is no way man evolved from the fish. You are forgetting about all the evolutionary steps along the way. Metal NOWADAYS is far different then punk is now, and was back then. BUT, that does not mean they didn't share similar origins. Its good to see bands that don't deny their heritage and and can incorporate it back into their music, such as this fine band.
@SixStringShreddder I think we were both arguing the same point from different angles. So yes that is fair enough for me, however, I'm not looking for everyone to agree with me, I just feel that there is a lot of ignorance on the subject, and I hope to enlighten. If you don't believe me that's fine, no skin off my teeth, I just don't want to hear an uneducated opinion on this particular subject, something I'm completely and utterly familiar with. So cheers and good discussion!
Dark Tranquility is alright, and Amon Amarth was cool, up until Fate of Norns, then it was obvious they weren't as into it as they were before... Wages of Sin was a fairly good album, however I think the main appeal of Arch Enemy after Angela joined was the fact that she was a woman pulling off Death Metal vocals...
Haven't a clue, I didn't listen to them for the longest time, not out of spite or any such nonsense, I just find a lot of the Norwegian bands to be boring, some are good, and the classics always slay, but its been done, its been heard, I'm ready to hear a black metal band that strays from the formula, and doesn't sound like something else entirely, take for instance Diabolical Masquerade's Death's Design, thats black metal, but mind blowing and not formulaic, I need more of that...
@Njordwarrior I can't see those influences in their music. More in Toxic Holocaust, Abigail, Barbatos, Fingernails and so on. Not in the first wave of BM.
If you listen to many black metal bands from today and even earlier you will not even hear anything similar to punk but more so classical music. Its all about the evolution of the sound. However it comes to a point where I think sometimes a sound goes so far that it loses its meaning like with what so called "punk" music is considered to be these days as opposed to the days of discharge.
@Practice9Perfection I'm not sure what you're talking about, in the last several posts I've said little about anyone being fuckers for not agreeing with me. My point metal grew up from punk, so its natural to have some punk elements, its still black metal, and thats what I call it. Just because of some punkiness means nothing.
k, numbr 1, whats the meaning, of the song/band name? 2 i respect them and this type of music but why does it seem that all the songs sound the same, if they're going to sing without any melody than why don't they have catchy guitar licks?, yeah so.... COBHC forevr
The only thing worth while about Dark Funeral is they didn't really change anything. Which is a double edge sword, you have one album, you have them all... And Arch Enemy should have called it quits right before that bitch joined the band...
You say that as if I care what other people classify their music as, I know what I'm talking about. Punk music played a heavy role in influencing metal, especially black metal, both have veered in totally different directions since then, but they are but branches of the same tree. But whether you like it or not those same tools are used as defining charactistics, name 10 black metal bands that don't use those charectesistics, and do they even sound like what we call black metal?
Yeah i've noticed black metal fans shit on everyother black metal fan's music tastes, it gets old after awhile, so fuck'em anyway. This song is good, for the most part, *I* dig this band...
my favourite band! Greetings from the country of the carpathian forests, from Hungary!
this band surprised me, much better than i thought, im really happy about that.
wow that chord progression sounds TOTALLY crust punk

it is you... Shagrath's and Nattefrost's voices are very different... Both are great vocalists! ^^

I thought the Carpathian Forest was in Transylvania, Romania.

mm enjoyable song, but Im not sure if was anyhting outstanding. first song ive listened to by them desides their mayhem cover. I'll look into them somemore.
@EvilKempe If he used to listen to some punk it doesn't mean that his demo was actually punk influenced.

@Jakeeh66
Gross in which way? And I assure you there is far worse out there.

Did Frost play in this band also?

@SixStringShreddder

Indeed, do that more, hurt more necks, its what metal is all about .
@SixStringShreddder
Sure I can, metal grew up from punk. There I just did it.
Dark Tranquility is alright, and Amon Amarth was cool, up until Fate of Norns, then it was obvious they weren't as into it as they were before...

@zombi1049
Well, greetings from the country of greed and ego-mania!
If you listen to many black metal bands from today and even earlier you will not even hear anything similar to punk but more so classical music. Its all about the evolution of the sound. That guy that said, "ooh arent we scary..boo hoo"
@Njordwarrior I mean BM bands not metal as a whole. Show me those influences in CF, Darkthrone and Mayhem. I can't see them.
I suppose, I think Abbath is a little deeper, a little more monotonous then Nattefrost. But fairly similar none the less...
Black angst-core
Metalpunx!
This doesn't quite sound like black metal but it DOES sound like bad ass!
@EvolutionXPfeiffer I apologize, you must be mistaken in thinking that you're actually worth my time. I hope you have a long, happy life.
k, numbr 1, whats the meaning, of the song/band name? 2 i respect them and this type of music but why does it seem that all the songs sound the same, if they're going to sing without any melody than why don't they have catchy guitar licks?, yeah so.... COBHC forevr
This is actually a video...

And Arch Enemy should have called it quits right before that bitch joined the band...
this song is too short :C
@Njordwarrior Well its not punk, its black metal isnt it? >

Hah, so much anger. Come on guys. Give us a smile! :D
