  • I've highlighted my other crazy Myrtillocactus geometrizans-known as a "booby cactus"-but this one is a crested form and rings in the #102 spot in "365 Days of Plants" today. '
In this video I go over some basic care tips including where this plant grows natively, where I'm growing it in my home, propagation, watering, lighting and more.
And as one of my subscribers, Timur, has pointed out, it is the betalain pigments that give the families of the order Caryophyllales their color-not the anthocyanins. Thank you for that!

I found your channel this year and it’s helped me so much! Over this summer I accumulated 11 plants, very tiny compared to your collection, but I’m proud of it lol love your channel ❤️

I would love to find a cacti that was like this or even this particular one, I find it so unique and beautiful. I don't buy the prickly ones, they are not my favorite, but some are pretty and very unique as well. I love that this series is so informative and to the point and I really am enjoying that, excited for the next one, thanks Summer.

The way I understand it, these crested varieties (amongst other common names) are not actually a genetic mutation, but a hormonal response that changes the growth pattern due to injury or stress. The cuttings taken can revert or stay in the form, and I know for me in the past, orientation made a big difference in changing or keeping the growth pattern intact. Beautiful plant, great video and info!

can you elaborate on how to keep the crested growth pattern up?

Interestingly, the subclass Caryophyllidae, in which cacti are included don’t contain anthocyanins. The red pigment is actually betalain, which happens to be the same pigment in beets :)

I was skeptical of buying this each time I see it. I felt unworthy of taking car of it. Not only that, most of the ones for sale are always huge and looks intimidating.

I’ve seen these at Lowe’s but they are in pots with small pebbles that seem to be glued down so I haven’t bought one but they are so interesting looking!

Now if we can just do something about the idiots who glue pebbles on top their soil! 🌵😕

    • @--Paws--
      @--Paws-- 5 років тому

Remember the soil media and the pebbles dry up making a natural seal. It always looks as though it was cemented in the pot. I have seen those that do have glue-resin on pebbles which was always weird to me.

Someone bought me a succulent arrangement like this & I'm afraid I'll have to break the pot when I have to replant. Lol

    • @--Paws--
      @--Paws-- 5 років тому

@Weezy Breezy Cactus and succulent media tend to consist of soil, sand and some pebbles.
Sometimes when it completely dries up, the media will be hard and stiff as cement especially when it is mostly made up of small rocks and pebbles.
However, when plant gets watered again, the media loosens up and breaks up the cement like hold it has.
I have experianced this with most succulent and even bonsai media that tend to have a top layer of small rocks and the like.

      @bkrbkrl 5 років тому +4

@Weezy Breezy Yes, but that is not what people are talking about. The pebbles ARE glued down with some kind of a resin. It is ridiculous. You practically have to chisel it off.

Last month my crested cactus developed a dead area, triangular shaped with wider portion at the outside. Don’t know what I did wrong. Should I cut that area out? I had it in a south facing window, I had been watering every month. Maybe I should have stopped watering completely? Had initially thought I was giving it too much light, maybe not....
