Picked up a GR1 from a buddy for $175 and absolutely love this camera. I shoot a good amount of film, and own quite a few point and shoots and the Ricoh takes the cake for me. The perfect amount of control, but not too much. Also the 28mm focal length works well for travel, landscape, street, and full body portraits. Luckly the GR1 doesn’t have that poorly designed filter ring like the GR1S, which I’m very stoked on. Also, wondering why your camera was making such an odd sound when advancing as my copy is much quieter. Was there film loaded? Maybe was just loud because it was hinting for film?

Fantastic review! So much more informative than the slicker videos from big name UA-camrs. I haven’t heard anyone mention the awful noises, much less let the viewer hear them! That was really important information and is definitely going to affect my decision to purchase!

Wow I had no idea film was coming back! I still have my GR1, silver version...

Have you found any lesser known cameras with a similar feature set? I think the Contax T3 is probably the closest, but that price man. I know the Yashicas have Zeiss glass too, but no manual controls. Really looking for a pocketable manual control point and shoot that isn't $2000

This camera today price is way too high , most of them the LCD are not working at all or partially and costly to fix to almost impossible and the electronic is not reliable . Very confused / frustrating when you don’t know which mode is your shooting , shutter sound has weird loud ! Made in Taiwan , I sold it and never regretted , I rather go for others similar point and shot but more reliable and made in Japan and cheaper like yashica T3

Hi, just wondering if your lcd is broken, how can you see how many films you got left?

WOAH man! the photos look pretty sharp! How did you scan them? if you used a lab, do you know which scanner they were using? thanks a lot

thanks for the review. i also have a ricoh gr1s, that noise it makes when winding the film on is truly awful!! i thought mine was dying the first time i loaded a film - 8 rolls later and i'm thinking perhaps they always made that sound? haha. loved your b&w shots in particular. thanks again.

Haha yeah it’s one of those things where it’s great at a party because it turns heads, but pretty tough for street photography because it turns heads ;) thanks!

Thank you for your review. I have same camera but the noise and rewind pretty much smooth and quiet.

Really? That’s amazing. I need to find a quiet one to test. The noise is really my biggest gripe with the camera. Thanks for the tip.

bru ! do you live in bergen ! you took a photo outside my house with the camera you reviewed. anyway where is the best place to find a good price for a good film point and shoot? Finn. is hard to find the ones your recommended...

Woah that’s crazy! Well I was living in Bergen at the time that was taken but I’ve since moved to Oslo. To be honest I get most of my cameras on Finn and Ebay. Sometimes I find something nice at fretex too, but that’s pretty rare. The trick to using Finn I think is to setup saved searches in the app for a bunch of cameras you’re interested in and then when you see a good deal just jumping on it. Got a nice Leica M3 for 2000 nok just recently doing that. For the cheaper ones like the Olympus XA2 there’s plenty of cheap ones on eBay though it’s not always easy getting shipping to Norway.

Look for house clearance/charity/thrift shops.. There's lots of quality point and shoots about - Olympus XA2, trip 35, Lomo LC-A.. have a look in the cheap stores near you, eBay can be overpriced but the Olympus Trip 35 you can pick up pretty cheap (between 10 and 20 gbp) and it's a great camera.

Have you checked out the Olympus XA2? Seems you can still get it for about $30 online. For best bargains try flea markets, yard sales, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc

"Sounds like a robot taking a dump." Not often does my reaction go from WTF to total agreement so quickly....
