  • October 14th, 2023, Joan Silver and Janet Dougherty present their lectures in honor of tutor Eva Brann.
Joan Silver presents: "Roots: Of Living Things; Of Inquiry; Of a Friendship"
Through the motif of the roots of plants, I will explore inquiry, beginning with Plato’s Sophist and then turning to the work of Jacob Klein, looking at his thinking both about liberal education and about the transformation that enabled the rise of modern science, which rise has resulted in our estrangement from the natural world and indeed from ourselves. I will finish by looking at the roots of one friendship--my friendship with Eva.
    Janet Dougherty presents: "Liberal Imaginings"
Eva and I have shared many conversations and co-led many summer classics seminars together over the last 20 years or so. Our weeks together in seminar gave me an opportunity to share, apprentice-like, in Eva’s extraordinary tutorly virtues. Each week we could see the inception of what Eva calls “imaginative friendship,” a kind of friendship Aristotle ignores and that Eva explains in The World of the Imagination. In my talk I juxtapose Eva’s decades-long work on the imagination with Aristotle’s treatment of the imagination in De Anima. Eva’s work demonstrates friendship, in particular imaginative friendship, rather than active intellect, as the goal of liberal education. Eva is the artful contriver of imaginative friendships and of the College in its fullest, most actual form.
