  • Is 2-year-old hay stored outside any good for livestock? Our cows are telling us that the hay we stored on oak posts for two years is still good. If you don't have a building to store your hay in, then place the bales on 6-8" diameter oak logs. By keeping the bottom of the bale from contacting the ground, it prevents rotting. For more grazing info check out my new book " How to Think Like a Grazier" on our website: greenpasturesfa...

Wow and the synthetic fertilizer prices, fuel prices, and grain prices just make this way look so much better, because it is so much better. Beside for the soil biology and water sources, etc. Thank you

It is going to take a lot of the high input producers out of the livestock business I am afraid. I am already getting emails from conventional livestock operators wondering how are they going to survive.

You're quite correct to question the contribution of academics Greg. People interested in Regenerative Agriculture get a lot more good advice from people in the game. Names like, Jim Elizondo, Johann Zeitsmann, yourself, and your interns, can join with others like, Salatin, Archuleta, Brown, Savory, etc. What working farmers provide are examples of the application of _Common Sense_ which is a real world multiplier wherever it available. They will accept 80% results whereas the book-learned are always unsatisfied with anything less than 100%. That's just not reasonable however it doesn't discount what they add. I mean who doesn't enjoy the intricacy available through the work of Dr Christine Jones, or the enthusiasm of Dr Elaine Ingham, etc. But the love and regard for the animals is what makes a farmer and that is reflected in the food they produce. The search for 100% is what is behind feed lots or the Green Revolution, and that has proven to be a disaster for humanity.

I listened to a video of a big defense Lawyer once who said he don't like having college professors on a jury. He claimed none of them are as smart as they think they are and they don't have any real life experience or common sense. The Lawyer said he would much rather have a Truck Driver on the jury than a Professor. Then I had an older guy, ( I consider him old cause I'm 50 and he was my Sunday school teacher back when I was a teenager) tell me that he used to live in Bloomington Indiana where all of the I.U college Professors lived. He said those Professors were some of the dumbest people on Earth.

I have a feeling that there’s going to be a tipping point in cattle ranching, whether it’s from old guys retiring and young guys being open to new ways, or conventional guys just getting tired of losing money, and suddenly the light is going to go on around the world. The numbers are going to flip and its going to be 95% rotational and 5% conventional. It could be in the next 5 years.

Charlie I hope your right, but change is awful painful for fellows that are stuck in their rut of doing things a certain way. With input costs exploding, they are going to be in a world of hurt now.

Thanks for all your videos! It looks like our mud season could be over, but we are getting rain Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with some snow in there too so who knows. I planted some cover crops in our future pasture and it is starting to green up some. We are having sun and warm weather this past couple days so that is helping a lot.

I enjoy watching Greg's video's so much and try to see how it applies to our operation in Ontario - the conditions and cattle are just so much different it makes it a challenge to parlay the advice. We have 600 lb weaned calves, and 1200lb cows. Horses for courses I suppose.

I don't expect that they will be bawling with joy at the reunion later this year. Could be wrong. I was looking in a mirror earlier and I could see a bit of Dad in my face and my maternal Grandmothers smile uncle Doug's green eyes .. he and I were the only ones with green eyes . I remember a big family gathering when I was young and hearing she's the spitting image of her father while walking up to the potluck spread out at the far end of the hall on the Hoyt picnic ground next to the baseball field. Then with my plate in hand walking down the other side of the hall and hearing Linda looks like her mother's side of the family. I thought it was funny how they saw different things in my face or something else about me that said one thing or the other. Years later I saw a picture of my great great-grandfather standing with his brother and a few son's and another worker in front of his blacksmith shop you could tell who wasn't a Duplisea his feet were parallel to each other all of his family brother and sons stood with heels together and their toes so far apart that you would wonder how easy it would be to topple them front to back but not side to side. . I can tell you as a Duplisea it hurts if you try to stand with your feet parallel. Don't get me started about skating and skiing. Heck learning to walk was enough of a challenge.. see you in the next one 😘💕💞💕🍀☘️🍀🌟👍👍👍👍👍🌟💖🌟🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🍀☘️🍀🙋🏼‍♀️

Hi there Greg. Just recently I heard that in parts of America (something called the "Fescue Belt", which includes Missouri ) the very specific characteristics of the Fescue grass makes it economically sound to calve the cattle in the autumn. I'd love to hear you elaborate on that a bit. Thanks.

Lots of producers do calve in September/October and get by quite well doing that. Our spring born calves always out perform or fall born calves. We have about 8-10 fall calving cows left. 95% of our cows calve in April/May. I need to do a video on the advantages of both calving seasons.

I've been hearing a lot of negativity on Twitter, I thought it was just conventional guys but turns out some regen guys were also complaining. You simply do not hang around and listen to people saying there is no future in agriculture. Leave them alone and move forward. These are the people that are the most resistant to change, go move your cows, improve your water, fence, marketing, brainstorm new endeavors, and the list goes on. Folks we live in the best country on the planet, go for it.
I hate pity parties and there is no place for them on a successful grazing operation.
